I know it's a little later to respond, but they dont know the cause of a ferret becoming anemic. Once they get it, if you have a good vet, they'll know. however there's no way of treating it. you can do blood transfusions, but that'll give you a couple more months at best. I lost my ferret approx 2 months after catching it.
Though I must state, i personally think it could be carried by little critters outside, and your ferret comes in contact with them somehow.
We ended up doing about 5 or more major blood transfusions for Shadow, we treated him with Epogen with some success, and had a bone marrow aspiration done to find out why his PCV kept dropping so badly. Other then the bone marrow aspiration, there was no surgery involved.
i wish i saw this video ages ago. please respond as soon as you see my last comment. Also how long was he in hospital, looks like this was taken a couple of weeks after the surgery. How much did it cost you, i've already spend $2500, not too worried about that, just need to be prepare for the shock. glad your ferret is up and running again.
DAMN IT!!!!!!! i've searched websites galor to try any find out whats wrong with my ferret. we noticed about 3/4 months ago, to cut it short, wasn't feeling good. vet noticed an unusually rare enlarged spleen, which caused (packers) to lose his blood count. we we needed up removing it, he felt good for a week, then started going bad again. Now the vet thinks hes got anemia, and he has a mass growth Q? what did you vet say caused it? you said he had a blood transfusion, but why the surgery?
WOW. I have four ferrets and I love them dearly, but I don't know if I am prepared to spend the money that I imagine you have spent to save your precious ferret. I have a silver mitt male too called Frodo.
