You guys are lucky, 'cause I sure never even heard of this movie until now... I only read the book in 6th grade. I remember Robert (Tim) and feeling bad for him but not really because he was kind of a stalker. This movie takes his character WAY beyond stalker.
saw this in social studies class really god the only thing are the two chick that was against the whole the wave thing i lost all sympathi for them long ago
I had to watch the first Wave movie in school and I saw Die Welle on Netflix. I liked the original ending a lot more, but I think Die Welle was a much better movie overall.
lol i was reading the book the wave. We did the strength through discipline thing in class, we did posture and did the stand and say teachers name then answer fast thing.
An excellent film. It speaks volumes to every culture and language spoken. A good example of how any country, no matter the culture, could become fascinated by a manipulative dictatorship. The film demonstrates the foundations effortlessly, while exposing the human instinct to belong somewhere, and desire structure and community.
but i have a question about the ending...when mr.wegner was in the car, he was disappointed and confused to what just happened... THEN all of a sudden he opens his eyes as if he realized something. what was it?
We had to watch the old '80s after-school program based on this story in my high school history class. Needless to say, the acting looks much better in this version.
I am an American studying DER german language for a trip to see some family, while I admit that this film was interesting to me, I find it awkward that modern day German films are ALWAYS either about the Nazis or facism or the holocaust. It is simply not fair, German history is more than 1930s-1950s era, I would like to watch a german film about something else for once. Are we Americans force to watch films about the Trail of Tears every year? therefore, hollywood making something else
I cried in front of my whole class after watching this in Sociology.
It just made me really upset having to see what Tim went through. He felt so secluded and alone in the world, having no friends, being bullied, and parents that didn't care. Finally, he feels important and wanted once The Wave starts. Other members are sticking up for him against bullies, people are talking to him, and he finally feels like he fits in somewhere. Seeing his happiness shatter when The Wave shuts down was SO sad.
it was an american movie first....made back in the 80's....our sociology class had to watch it.....just another remake......it was a true story....kids had mental breakdowns when they were forced to stop.....the teacher was fired.....
The original story is a hoax. There was a teacher who tried to make such a thing happen, but it was a complete failure, the vast majority of the students thought it was a joke.
We watched it in class and it was the first movie where I was crying because of anger. Still, after the third Reichand thousands of incidents like the one seen here, it would still be possible, because to person, who wants to be better than others and to be part of something big, exists in everyone!
I saw a movie about 20 years ago that was very much like this. I thought it was american and it took place in HS. I always wished I knew the name. It CHANGED the way I thought and saw the world INTEGRALLY. I recommend anyone who has kids...take them to see this film. Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it. Too many died in WWII: Allied Troops, concentration camp victims, war victims, for anyone not to pay attention to this movie.
fascism is banks and corporations controling a government like what we have in america today.
the propagandists always try to confuse people so that they think a mass rebellion of the people is fascism. socialism is rebelling against fascist banks to create a government for the people.
a mass movement is not a bad thing if it seeks to put human needs above the interests of banks and corporations.
so dont let this propaganda brainwash you into thinking a mass movement is bad.
@patriciamarylaine08 It's about a teacher whose students don't get why the Holocaust was soo big yet the people living in Germany have no idea that it's happening. To make them understand more the teacher put an "experiment" with them.. to see how powerful it can be. So the teacher teaches them a motto and a salute. So the experiment goes well and it gets out of control.. with some "Wave" members (The Wave= Nazis) end up beating people up if they don't listen to them. Read to find the ending..
I don't know why everyone is commentating how this is a German film taken from a California story as if America never takes stories from other countries and makes them into American films......
@HyperBeam17 we're really proud that germany produced such a good movie! I'm german, and to be honest, I don't like german movies :D but that one is freakin amazing ;)
@HyperBeam17 It just doesn't make sense business wise to make it in German language when Germans (I think) already speak English. It would just broaden the viewers but German language is cool imma still watch
@HyperBeam17 Thats true, they just stole the Norwegian movie "Headhunter" reamaking it in american, the same with the sweedish "Men who hate woman" into "the girl with the dragon tattoo" as if foreign movies aren't good enough -.-
Why is it in German? The original experiment was carried out in a California high school (English obviously) the point being that the whole Nazi mentality was not a stricly German phenomenon, but rather human nature in general and how that type of mob mentality is cultivated and comes to fruition.
We just read the book in school after the unit of the Halocaust. and were watching a movie this friday called The Wave..... is this it!? It's nothing like the book and ....in German?
I only got to catch the end of this movie really late one night but got so into it. I don't usually watch subtitle films especially half way through but I got hooked and now I really want to watch the whole film.
I watched this movie at school and it was amazing. Just the depth of what could happen if dictatorship was again possible :/ Inspired me to sort of change my ways with my parkour group.
Karo's younger brother stopped smoking and the bully stopped being a bully and acted as a guardian instead, The rich angry kid finally found a place where he could belong where everybody was equal. Karo's boyfriend started believing in himself so he started caring about his schoolwork instead of just being a good athlete. Karo seeks out conflict with the class when she decides to wear a RED shirt juxtaposed to a WHITE that they agreed on together, She could have changed to a new class.
@TheIhatejew The German school system doesn't work like that, usually it is VERY hard in a German school to get out of a class in the middle of the year. Mostly (depends on what grade you're in) you can't get out of a class for years. Of course, it seemed like the equality was a good thing! It'd nice to be treated the same way as your neighbour, but over a long time it doesn't work. People want to be seen as individuals. People just ARE different. History has shown, that it doesn't work.
What bothered me with this film is that Karo valued HER personal views over the common good. Just hear me out on this ok? The ONLY requirement is that you wear a white shirt and jeans, Thats it. There was no requirement to come to Die Welle parties or to participate in the graffiti stuff. Before you say "Well what about the Herr Wenge stuff and the standing up part?" That was only in Mister Wenge`s class. Everyone achieved better grades and people found comradeship and love togheter.
@WolfytheWolf5667 This has nothing to do with Germany trying to hide its "Nazism", its not as if experiments like this happen in Germany just to show people why the Nazis came to power, the original thing happened in America.

@Perlenhexe89 Hey, that guy is from UK! We Americans have our share of idiots as well, but let's give credit where it's due, yeah? (Plus we don't use stupid lingo like "chavs." lol) We have fringe groups of Nazis too, that yes, still discriminate against African Americans and other minority groups. I guess that (and Mr. Wolfy here) goes to show that there are idiots everywhere. ;)
It doesn't matter what the actual philosophy is....Hitler or Bin Laden...it just doesnt matter. give a bunch of losers something to believe in, and they will follow. Its how we are all wired in our brains. It's why individual freedom must be protected, exemplified, and promoted. Even if it means ripping the hijab off someone else's woman. People must not be allowed to be cattle.
Yeah, thank God we have Capitalism that is totally democratic, with no brainwashing and that puts peoples need, health and happiness in first place..... o.O
@SwedenArise HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO sweden is a socialist country (socialism is not comunism) in fact most of Europe is like that so review YOUR History XD
@ghostofdawn Depends on what you're comparing with. Sweden is ruled by a centre-right goverment, so it's not that socialist anymore and is going to be less. But compare to US, yeah, I guess we are.
@VarnalFaer you are right about that but what i meant is that now most of the country that we live in have a socialist (A.K.A center) point of view in the political way and the world isn't so bad after (but i know it still needs a LOT of improvement)
@ElectroniqueStuff well i am german so i dont even need the subtitles lol but im in the US right now and i really want everyone to see that movie but theyre all to lazy to read the subtitles so they dont like to watch it XD
I watched this movie on youtube. Part 1-3 - but the movie seemed to short and not all the scenes were their. Does anybody know a good web site to watch this whole movie for free, without signing up. Sorta like megavideo or something....?
Before I watched this movie last night, I thought it looked really good. I finished watching it in stunned silence. My brain is still in a kind of shock over how powerful and awesome it is. One of the best movies I've ever seen!
@EOEC2222 i know :D i saw the american version too in school:D but i think the german is better and i think its funny that the americans have to watch a german movie because german movies are not so popular in america like american movies in germany :D
heeey :) i live in Denmark. me and my class saw this movie today.. first we were like "ohh noo, not anthoder stupid movie!" but woooow this movie is SO good!! it gives me the chills! All of my friends loved it! ^^
This is totally not what happened. It's exaggerated a LOT. The book of it and the movie Cults: The Wave are much more accurate of what really happened.
@abbygale1390 ya german's are great... i spent a month in you're country, and you guys are nice, my brother was in the army so i spent a month with him at his house, and i'll tell you, if teenagers can drink, you guys are ok in my book, lol :P

(Plus we don't use stupid lingo like "chavs." lol) We have fringe groups of Nazis too, that yes, still discriminate against African Americans and other minority groups. I guess that (and Mr. Wolfy here) goes to show that there are idiots everywhere. ;)

It is scary to see how easily people will follow a strong leader, no matter what he stands for!

We're reading this book at the moment, in school. its so strange how this could actually happen.

I think Frederick Lau was the best actor in the movie.

People must not be allowed to be cattle.

this way of thinking could also be the seed of a dictatorship, think about it.

fedor76 11 months ago
@SwedenArise democratic socialism is when the people run the nation through democracy and the businesses don't. Are you afraid of democracy?
Mikeofdundee1987 11 months ago
@SwedenArise HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO sweden is a socialist country (socialism is not comunism) in fact most of Europe is like that so review YOUR History XD
ghostofdawn 11 months ago
@ghostofdawn Depends on what you're comparing with. Sweden is ruled by a centre-right goverment, so it's not that socialist anymore and is going to be less. But compare to US, yeah, I guess we are.
Grooverfc 11 months ago
@ghostofdawn
Socialism... How many despot were called 'socialist' before being dictator? Hu Ho.
VarnalFaer 10 months ago
@VarnalFaer you are right about that but what i meant is that now most of the country that we live in have a socialist (A.K.A center) point of view in the political way and the world isn't so bad after (but i know it still needs a LOT of improvement)
ghostofdawn 10 months ago
they should translate the movie. it could be a huge success in the us!

@CaramelBonBon This is better without dubbing, just subtitled.

I watched this movie on youtube. Part 1-3 - but the movie seemed to short and not all the scenes were their. Does anybody know a good web site to watch this whole movie for free, without signing up. Sorta like megavideo or something....?

This is totally not what happened. It's exaggerated a LOT. The book of it and the movie Cults: The Wave are much more accurate of what really happened.
