I have the impression from a wasp/hornet extermination expert that when they're in foraging mode like that hornet seemed to be, the last thing on their minds is to attack you. If you're anywhere near their nest, they'll attack you in swarms without warning. Just like all hornets, they can mobilize the entire nest to sting in defense. And if you kill one, they'll send out a distress signal which can trigger the entire nest to attack.

Those suckers are HUGE! We found a hive back when we were stationed in Japan, but we didn't know what kind of wasps/hornets lived in there, so we left it alone. I can't remember what happened then, but later on, I found another hive (a smaller one that looked like it was just getting started) and I poked it with my brother's butterfly net (being the idiot I was).
