Say, I wonder if Sam Phillips was present during this performance. He'd have gone absolutely bonkers if these guys had dropped by in 1956 or so and done this tune ... then! How incredible! ... I just ordered the DVD.
Yeah, Johnny Cash wrote this and it was first recorded by Warren Smith in the 50s. You can find Cash's demo on the Bear Family box set titled The Man In Black 1954-58.
He forgot a verse "One night my Ruby left me all alone I tried to contact her on the telephone. I finally found around a tweleve o'clock she said a-leave lonely daddy cus ruby wants to rock she's my rockin..." Still great though
@johnnyndl Not by a million miles. And he hardly does credible job on the vocal. Check out some versions from 50 years ago. Actually, slightly before that in fact. Warren Storm. Roy Orbison. Jerry Lee Lewis. Written by one J. Cash.
Is that video on a dvd or something ? cause there is Ferry and Knopfler and I love both of their music so I would be interested in seeing the whole video...
Writen or at least credited to Johnny Cash but made famous by Warren Smith, It was his first record (Recorderd February 5, 1956 Sun 239 - Rock 'n' Roll Ruby / I'd Rather Be Safe Than Sorry)
