" . . .felt his voice take the sword out of my hand." People get the wrong idea thinking, 'if my loved ones were restored later, I'd stop feeling so angry too.' God had to stand by and watch His Son die. He knows what grief is too. He went through it. Jesus went to his death willingly so that even when we lose those we can't bear to be without, when we die, the first thing God can tell us is: "Your loved ones are, over there." Belief is NOT to escape punishment later. It's to cope with pain now.
Consiglio a tutti la visione di questo film, chi non l'ha visto non puo' certamente capire la scena finale del fim, potrei dirVelo, non lo faro'......buona visione.
When you say "Ben Hur" everyone thinks about the great chariot race and not saying they shouldn't. It's one of the greatest scenes ever made in the history of television, but not enough is sauid about this beautiful ending. Judah, was filled with hatred, anger, and rage until he was standing beneath the cross. Realized that this Man was also innocent and had gone through a much much more in 4 hours than Judah had be though in 4 years. Heard Jesus forgive and now he's able to forgive. Awesome!
We are capable of so much more than our culture demands. Watching films back when the West loved that which was its foundation rather than now pretending multiculturalism is its foundation. He who rests on nothing inevitably sinks.
It's so shocking to see how the West shies away from acknowledging that which established it and structured it. If Westerners were truly trapped in other constricting cultures then they would understand the importance and value of their own. On one of the videos on Ben-Hur I read a comment -- "This comes from the time when Christianity wasn't spat upon." Now these people are just too ashamed of their religious heritage . What a shame!
I totally agree and very well put. Because man cannot create truth but only discovers it, and science cannot answer many fundamental questions on the nature of the universe as its completely neutral on God's existence, those who deny God exists do not do so on any "reasonable basis" but only through emotional bias against him. The ignorance of history is truly sad. "The Dark Ages, the "Medieval Ages": these were times were Europe was built and civilization consolidated!
The final moments of this remarkable film has so much redemptive power and humanity, more than I've seen in any movie ending, especially the closing scene with the crosses against the sunrise. The End is just The Beginning!
I'm an atheist, but man this scene never fails to get me choked up. The acting, the music, the christian symbolism, this film is a great piece of film and art.
@Josh0473 Friend, you may continue in your belief or non-belief, but before you "discount" anything in the universe by simply declaring "atheism", compared to what we still don't know; bear in mind that despite humankind's accomplishments to date, we are indeed still "microbes" on a cosmic scale. In philosophical terms, consider the message/work of Jesus/Yeshua. Don't deny yourself, at least consider "agnosticism"....be well.
@Josh0473 Friend, by simply being "agnostic" you are neither "believer" nor "disbeliever" therefore logically you cannot be "agnostic atheist" simultaneously, Ciao.
@BVargaMCooper Wrong, I don't claim to know weather god exists or not so i'm agnostic, but i personally don't believe that he does. So i'm on the sitting fence between the two sides, but i'm more lenient on the side that says a god doesn't exist. Its not rocket science. Agnosticism deals with knowledge, theism or atheism deals with belief. There's no contradiction to what i'm saying. To keep it simple i just label my standpoint on this to atheism. Peace man.
The subtlety is more powerful, I think, because Ben Hur's conversion is portrayed to be internal--it is what is inside him that changes. That is why this ending always moved me more deeply than the endings of most religious epics (like Quo Vadis and The Robe). Of course, while I can enjoy those movies (after all, I grew up with them), this movie is so much above them. Interesting that it was directed by a Jew (and I'm a Roman Catholic convert).
I've always been more moved by this ending then those of other religious epics. I think it is because Ben Hur's conversion is internal--at least it is in this movie. It is what is inside him that changes.
Ben Hur's conversion from Judaism to Christianity is much more subtle and subdued than in both the the silent version and in the book. Mr Heston has the perfect face and character traits for the role, and the music by Miklos Rozsa remains the most perfect film score I've ever heard. I've seen the film so many times, and this perfect conclusion rips me apart every time.
A fact: In this movie, the face of Jesuschrist isn't showed because it was a bad thing putting a person representing the great son of God. But 2 years after, the movie 'King of Kings' shows the face of Jesuschrist (Jeffrey Hunter played Jesuschrist in that movie). In other words, there are only 2 years of difference between a movie were the face ofe Jesuschrist is not showed and other one that is showed.
One of the real "miracles" of this movie, is the way that the composer of the score, the incredible Miklos Rozsa, managed to meld many of the on-going musical themes of the movie into this long final scene. Listen, as the CHRIST THEME is overlayed into the WASHING THEME, the the LOVE THEME comes in and the music symbolizing Ben-Hur's FAMILY and finally the triumphant CHRIST THEME. Also, listen as Heston climbs the stairs the Rozsa has to stretch the theme out to match the action.
This is the best part of the movie. It's is one of the best christian films ever. Give all praises to the Lord Jesus Christ he deserves it. I can't till Jesus comes back soon in the clouds and we will meet him in the air. And by his strips we are healed. Jesus is the real deal.
i remember in 1981 watching this movie at a nishat cinema with my uncle. in those days watching an english movie in a cinema specially in a cinema was a magnificent experience. although the movie lasted for more than 3 hours but i went again with my cousin to watch this excellent movie. the sound effects were so good that i jumped from my seat at least two times. a lovely movie.
Easily the greatest movie ever made, and with Hollywood on a non-stop decline to leftist propaganda and CGI-whoring, they can NEVER even dream of topping this movie.
Wanna make a LOT of money? Make films that treat Christian beliefs with respect. Not sarcasm, not propaganda. Just respect. If you make them 'we will come.'
They don't make movies like this anymore. i have heard of churches showing this on Saturday or Friday nights, What a great idea, I to am deeply moved by this scene and the music. Praise be to God he never abandons us it is us who abandons him. If man loved God as much as he loves us how much better the world would be.
I've seen this movie MANY times and it never fails to stir my emotions. The film that begins with the Nativity ends with a shepherd leading his flock in front of Calvary with three empty crosses. How fitting. Oh and the music. Best soundtrack in all the films I've seen. Hands down. John Williams is a great composer, so is Howard Shore and there are others but no one can match Rozsa.
@ERROLCUSTERFLYNN4EVR, and what of those of us that HAVE followed Christ only to be left with prayers unanswered. When my mother, who was the most generous, kindest people I ever met, became ill, I prayed constantly for her recovery. Instead, she suffered for years and only to be cruelly taken away from those who loved her. My faith in a religion that cannot provide explanations either for those who believe in it or those who don't died the day she did.
@vaxxon1 My mother died of Cancer, and I prefer to stay a believer and see her in heaven, than going against God and becoming an enemy of my faith, when people have endured worst situations than me and still believe
@AoiKageNoChikara, worst? By what measure? To me, watching someone who is closer to you than anyone be slowly taken away while you stand there powerless to do keep it from happening is something I wouldn't even wish on my worse enemy. And I haven't become an "enemy" of faith, just my faith in whatever people look to as "god".
@vaxxon1 Guess what, I know how it feels, looks like you didn't took the time to read my comment neither will I took my time to read yours, Well, if you wanna read, I was saying no one knows how God Works, if it happens, it hurts, it hurts worse than an open wound, but if it happens, I would like to see this through the end, If God's real (which I know it's true) then I will have a chance to see my mother again, but If I go against God, then I'll never be able to see her again,
@vaxxon1 And wow, you think your the only person suffering on earth? you know, there's been people is worse situation than use, like childs watched their 2 parents dying, childs loosing their parents to a sickness while they are a lot younger than us, kids getting raped, there's so much suffering, it's very unmature and selfish to think your the only one suffering, If you have time to feel hatred and resentment, then try and do something about it.
@vaxxon1 We forget that death is not the end but a beginning and a path we will all take. As he promise we will all be reunited in his kingdom. I will live my life to the best of my abilities and follow his teachings. So when death come to me, it will not be fear in my heart, but my faith to guide me to him.
Judah Ben Hur returns with a disappointed look on his face thinking that now there is no hope for his mother and sister, since CHRIST has died on the cross...he must be thinking what to do now, little does he know that HE who died on the cross, whose voice took the sword out of his hand, HIS blood is equally powerful that took the leprosy out of his family also, healing his mother and sister.
Great astonished looks on his face when he sees them.
I grew up with this film. A favorite of my mother's. Wyler was one of the Great Directors. Not many today could overpower audiences on massive scales with
excitement like the chariot race and in the same story move them on such deeply
personal levels. All the Oscars were deserved. Titanic tied it, but that was many years later. None have beaten it.
You are right. Nothing can compare with the sheer power and majestty of this great film. The felling I always get after watching this great movie is exhilaration. And of course having a Miklos Rosza score made it all the more breathtaking.
I also implore you to watching another great Charlton Heston film ---- Will Penny --- I heard heston say in interviews that Penny was his best acting performance.
The ending to this film is so powerfull. No other film can get close to it. Just seeing those three crosses and the ending. Even now 17 years, after seeing the ending for the 1st timer it still gives me goose bumps. No wonder the film won so many oscars.

This is one of the best scenes of this movie. And this movie is one of the best i ever see in my life. I have also the book at home. The book is from Lew Wallace. The healing power of christ is the same, yesterday. today and forever. He healed also me. Gods love is more than we will know. i called to every persons: give your live to Jesus. Trough him we will have the life. AMEN
Ive always found this film very moving and uplifting. However its just a film. There is no God. There is no afterlife. This is a one shot existence. So make the most of it and be nice to everyone.
I believe everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I don't understand how you could find this film uplifting at all if you believe that there is no God.
As C.S. Lewis said "Jesus was either a liar, a lunatic, or lord"
but why would someone die for something they know to be a lie? Perhaps then, he was a lunatic, if he told falsehoods, but did not know it. How then, has a lunatic changed the world, Influencing and worshiped by millions of people for thousands of years, to this very day?
God has never left us, but we man have, most of us. for he shall be with us until the end of the world. Bless you father, we can all still be saved, its never too late. Fantastic movie. His love is so infinite, there is no limit for his love for us is unlike any other and so pure then anything else. God bless you all my brothers and sisters.
yea, i love this soundtrack (especially from 2:40).. heavy metal band manowar always use it for their live intro... these moments are soooo awesome epic!! i've seen it 5 times so far and next year i'm gonna see them again at least twice :)
He did die...but was resurrected. You see that is more powerful. So that if we trust in Him ...He has demonstrated to us what Job said..."I know that my Redeemer lives...and that He shall stand upon the earth on the last day, and though if with my flesh, worms eat my body...I know that in my flesh I shall see God!"
This ending made my eyes tear in happiness. It's very, very rare that you see movies that have endings this truly fulfilling. Long live this film, and especially Charlton Heston.
I go numb whenever I watch this.

How then, has a lunatic changed the world, Influencing and worshiped by millions of people for thousands of years, to this very day?

that your mind dwells is such as state of division & questioning shows you are yet to follow what is depicted in the movie
this is called spiritual blindness, having a log in one's eye
take care to be complete rather than partial

Jesus is Lord Almighty on HIgh.....and when God will take back the world, He will be there, never abandoning us....it is man who abandons Him.

"he didn't die"

He did die...but was resurrected. You see that is more powerful. So that if we trust in Him ...He has demonstrated to us what Job said..."I know that my Redeemer lives...and that He shall stand upon the earth on the last day, and though if with my flesh, worms eat my body...I know that in my flesh I shall see God!"

The look of amazement and overwhelming joy as he's walking up the stairs, plus the music,is the most inspirational moment,in the history of film.

This ending made my eyes tear in happiness. It's very, very rare that you see movies that have endings this truly fulfilling. Long live this film, and especially Charlton Heston.
