@6923scott Extended Flaps increase the lift created by the wings, so you need less speed to take off. Flaps also increase drag however, so after takeoff as the airspeed increases the flaps are retracted. You wouldn't have the flaps extended as far for takeoff as you would for landing though.

seems bit unusual for an aircraft to take off without any flaps dosn't it ? That's what caused i belive it was an MD82 crash cant remeber what airline or where or when it was but without flaps a take off in real life would not be possible as the plane would not gain any lift and crash imidely or run out of runway, flaps increase the size of the wing - bigger wing = more lift and is crucial to have that lift during take offor landing

Try x-plane, some versions of x-plane are approved by the FAA, though that will cost you $500-1000 to unlock the professional models for some subsystems, but then you can build FAA approved commercial simulators. On the other hand the flight models on the regular version are the same. FSX has some very unrealistic performance characteristics, very unrealistic system behavior too.

Great little vid and sound - even at 70, the miracle of flight never fails to amaze me and I can't fly anything larger than a Cessna single engine. The cockpit views are standard training for BA and I believe that some aircraft can land themselves. Running on a Mac, I had to smile at the Windows 7 ads.
