I remember Tony Blackburn explaining on Sunday evening Radio 1 top 40 chart show what sericulture was 1:06 back in 81 when this song was re-released, crazy what you remember! - 'Sericulture', or silk farming, is the rearing of silkworms for the production of raw silk.
I just heard this for the first time TODAY. I've been a minor fan of THL prior to this, and a HYOOOGE fan of early "big beat" and early electronica. I dont understand why I never heard this track before today.
This ONE TRACK predicts the entire 1980's Big Beat and electronica, post-Kraftwerk sound.
Funny in America we get all this news shit about the queen in waiting and we live in America....if that does not speak volumes about the real empire we all live in I do not know what would be as blatant.
We in America are just the 'family' you dread having holiday with and we cannot divorce you because your 'mother' wants alimony that we cannot give up or we lose our bachelor lifestyle to pay our greedy ex.... Just a thought.
Awesome song, if you like Human League you should check out new band Cabfire they are also from Sheffield taking inspiration from their elders Human League! i love em! Simular 80's vibe going off!
Listen to the voice of Oakey. Saying he's got a new single called Night People. Little people like his offering, knowing that an album called Credo is coming...
The answer is simple: Human League after 1980 were composed by just two members of the original band, one of them being the singer Philip Oakley. The other half of the band, without which Human League was of course no longer Human League, went on to form Heaven 17 with Glenn Gregory, and the music production ensemble B.E.F. As B.E.F. they did remarkable things, including some reworking of this early songs, some of them to be found on the album of the "Hot Gossip" dance ensemble.
The version on Travelogue is fantastic. I just bought the remasterd CD and it just kicks the crap out of the version on their greatest hits..In fact, Travelogue just kills their greatest hits CD out..I had NO IDEA Human League was this progessive darkwave band...genius..Travelogue sounds like Depeche's Speak & Spell, but less corny. (I love DM so that's ALOT coming from me.) I can't wait till my copy of Reproduction comes. I wish Phil still sounded like this. F'ing groundbreaking stuff here...
We speak about 1979 . 30 years ago!!!!!!! And so much modern way ahead of their time. No wonder i liked this stuff from SImple Minds till Human League. I adore it!
i have this actual version the 1978 45rpm version with the picture sleeve showing a drawing of dancers,by an amazing coincidence i ws looking through an old newspaper that predated the single and it had an advert for butlins or pontins in it im sure it was ahem "borrowed"from the ad by the sleeve designer they are very similar i cut out and kept the ad its still inside the single sleeve the b side of the single was called circus of death.
Phil Oakey wrote the lyrics to this song and cemented his future with the band. I prefer this version though, released in 1982 after the success of Dare, reached No.6 in the charts. Great song!
If you like this I think you should listen to Nightboat by Duran Duran. There's a video on youtube from The old grey whistle test from 1981. Its absolutelt NOTHING like all there other records. Its sort of similar to this. Have a listen and tell me what you think.
This version of Being Boiled was NOT the single version released in 1982. This version was on Reproduction. According to the guinness book of hit albums Reproduction came out in August 1981. I actually think the single version from 82 is better than this and I think the version on Travelogue is bloody awful.
Reproduction came out in 1979! 1981 is when Dare came out and the women were already with the group. My version of Reproduction (the original) doesn't have Being Boiled...I think you may have the re-release that came out years later.
For the record! This is the '78 7" vinyl version & was never on the original "Reproduction"('79).
(The only single release from that LP was "Empire State Human").
This version was eventually included on the CD release of the album in 1989.
In 1980 a version (included on "Travelogue") was released called "Holiday '80"; a double 7" gate-fold including "Rock 'n' Roll/Nightclubbing", "Marianne", and "Dance Vision". Fast re-released this '78 version in '82 to cash in on the "Dare" success. :)
I have little thing to ask to some expert of postpunk's sound! But what budget had more of that people at the end of 70 and the beginnig of 80?I tryed in that time to buy a little synthesizer but was very costing theyr came out with more good instruments very high in costs 20 or 15 years ago!!!Rich boys???Or the discografic label was take to him that equipment? Please someone tell me more!
Human League received large amounts of money from Virgin in advance.Ware&Craig Marsh spent it all in equipment. When record sales weren't as successful as expected they were forced by Virgin to record more conventional music, for the company to recover their investment. They did it under the moniker 'The Men'.As those efforts weren't susccesful either,Virgin decided to let them record another lp as HL.Lack of financial success continued, and Ware eventually left the band.Oakey retained the name,
