Charlotte and Prince William cannot end up together. When one is in line for the British throne they cannot marry a Roman Catholic or they would be giving up their right to ascend to the British throne.

This is true. When Charlotte's stepfather married Princess Caroline he gave up his right to ascend to the British throne. He is 500 and something on the list, but his three children will still be able to ascend. The case of them being King and Queen of England is quite unlikely, but still, they are on the list. So, if Prince William ever wants to be King (he is second in line) he can't marry a Catholic, which Charlotte is.
