Americans use "cunt", but only in regard to women. It's considered extremely sexist and insulting and is probably more taboo than saying "fuck". I notice that the Brits and Irish use "cunt" a bit more casually and refer to males as "cunts" which doesn't really make any sense to people from the States ("cunt" being an explicit reference to the female anatomy).

You would know that it sounds British to you, as an American, because that's what it's meant to do. But other English speakers can hear the American accent behind the British impersonation, because they're used to being able to distinguish American accents (as something alien to them) by certain features of speech, some which are apparent in this "British" accent.
