this song speaks much truth. as a college student during this time with a high lottery number, safe: i spoke with several returning vietnam vets and am still apalled at the lunacy of many political leaders waste of american lives. i wonder if a true accounting of the war will ever be known? one more time i offer my utmost respect to those who served, willingly or unwillingly. our country owes you much.
Can't anyone see past the surface humor of the lyrics of this song? Some people were really offended by it because it basically belittled the service of thousands of men who sacrificed so much in honor of their country. Imagine if you went overseas to fight a war and came back and was criticized for it.
@evashades ...they were forced to go. This song was sung by hundreds of soldiers as they landed in vietnam. No one wanted to go, it was different in the 60's. You didn't enlist, you were drafted whether you wanted to go or not.
country joe wouldve been the first frisky fucker to die if he ever faught in 'nam. ever other blind fool sings about how great peace and love is, while meanwhile the other half is busy doin shit and risking their fuckin lives for these bastards. what a world.
@TheSuckerCity Why are you listening to a protest song then? Why do you have a confederate flag, you're a very backwards moron. Listen up, why can't we all just put our guns down and go home?
haha ive heard the live version.. i love this song, i remember my friend introducing me to this song a long time ago (i am 27) so not soo long ago but yea..
This song takes me back to my Haight-Ashbury days in San Francisco in 1967 and 1968. I loved it!

Oh! One day after they turned Haight St. into a one-way because of all the tourist coming into the area, Country Joe got a truck with a flatbed trailer so he could set the band up on it. As they slowly came down Haight St., they were playing this song. I'll never forget that!
Unfortunately, I did this project a while ago, and since then I have had my computer crash and got a new computer, so I no longer have the original video, or song :(. If i come across the song I will shoot you a link
Thanks very much for this video. I am a history teacher teaching the Vietnam war and shall be using this for my class tomorrow - it is perfect for their Controlled Assessment task. Thanks again.
One last rant before I go. $5 says that none of you Pinkos knows anything about the Vietnam, Indochina, or Korean Wars. Read a damn book or at least wikipedia it. Don't reduce it(War itself) into something it's not. And don't indoctrinate others with YOUR bs thinking you know enough about it to 'enlighten' others. History repeats itself once forgotten, and this can be prevented only thru evaluations of the past. I said it once, I'll say it again: READ A GODDAMN BOOK! Thanks,
And I agree with shortimer09. Today's hippies don't even stand for anything. We all know War's an ugly beast, we don't need a f****** drum circle to know that. These people believed whole-heartedly that they were standing up for the greater good, and damnit, they tried everything to end it. What do hippies nowadays disagree with? "Evil" corporations? The "War on Terror" or whatever politically correct name we're calling it by now?
This exemplifies why we lost 'Nam. The lack of support of the war (which is completely understandable) seeped over into lack of support for troops. Why fight for a country that hates what you've done for it? Why die for someone who thinks you should be locked up? At least they got what they wanted. TET cease-fire, the Church Amendment, we lost a war even though we won every battle... Hate war, not troops.
@tabguy14 - From what I've heard is in the earlier parts of Vietnam we were winning the war but they changed leaders who fucked up and held back which led to more troops dying due to a fucked up strategy and I agree my bro in law is in the marines and I hate the war, not the soldier stuck in the crappy situation.
As a Vietnam veteran AND a veteran of another Texan's war (Desert Storm), I would and do discourage my sons and their friends from enlisting in the military- I fear my support of the troops falters when I realize they made a decision that may have been misinformed... not that my lads aren't weapons-proficient and deadly SHOTS mind you... they have killing skills...
Hey, thanks for the video. Would you mind telling me where I can locate the picture at 2:05, the one of the girl kneeling next to her friend who was shot? Thanks.
@ChocolateThunderRick The picture was taken by John Filo of Mary Ann Vecchio next to Jeffrey Miller after he was shot at Kent State University by the National Guard.
If you go to wikipedia and search "Kent State Shootings" you will find it there.
My dad used to sing this at the dinner table, I had no idea it was a real song, let alone a hit. Today this song would have a "parental warning" attached to it, it may even get banned; thereby increasing it's sale value.
@shootemup500 the song was a statement about vietnam...discussing the war is paying the truest homage to the song possible...the writers wanted to make people question the war....by debating we are dong the song justice.
Even if you hate any wars' reasoning, that doesn't mean you should make life hell for the soldiers, it's hell for them already. Sitting in a field listening to music and smoking weed doesn't help the world in any way, and is pretty damn selfish, so if you're concerned, go off and actually help somewhere.
And Arsehole? You do not have to answer my prior question..... as you must be a LIMEY FAG! WHO IS YOUR DADDY, Your Uncle? Look up my asshole is the American way to say it. And while you were up there, did i have eggs or your lesbo Mom for breakfast?
Xin loi my boy ! I'm no limey. I know who my father was and the rest of the clan. All of us are AMERICAN. Wrong again fucj face. I know that my Mom wasn't a lesba.
There are over 58,000 reasons why you would never understand. Their names are all on the Wall. The only thing I wanted in RVN was more ammo. You're the one that started all the insults. During the time Country Joe and his cronies were signing their shit, we were fighting Victor Charles and his counter part Mr. Nathaniel Victor. It wasn't fun. Country Joe and his people weren't there.
I believe it is you who does not understand. I do not know if Joe ever went to 'nam, but he did serve in the US military. I did have three relatives who were there, one uncle and two cousins. Both of my cousin's are now gone. My uncle, who is about 80, is and has been heavily sedated for the past 20 to 25 years. He never really got over all the he saw and lived through while in 'nam.
You're half way there. Now we can talk. Salute for your cosuins and Uncle. As I said it wasn't fun down South in The Republic That Once Was Vietnam. I was Country Joe and His Cronies that we hated. They weren't there, they wern't fighting, and they never had a clue. Hardly a day goes by that I don't think about RVN and my buddies that didn't make it. We can talk -- only if you stow the insults.
One cousin passed away at the age of 52. He would have been 59 this year. After being in 'nam for 6 months, a jeep he and 3 or 4 other gi's were in went over a land mine. My cousin was the only one to survive. he had shrapnel everywhere. My other cousin passed a week prior to his 60th. he would of been 65 this year. Bobby served two tours... on a chopper... side gunner and co-pilot.
His wake and funeral was attended by Vago's, Angle's, Outlaw's, and a plug of Viet Nam motorcycle veteran bikers. About thirty of the Vet's gave a speech about my cousin. Since I had not seen my cousin for maybe 16 years prior to his passing, I was quite surprised to learn that he became a counselor to "lost" vet's. As I am sure you are aware that many came back and were lost. My cousin did not like being in 'nam, and vas very vocal about it.
Sorry to hear this. At first, when I came home, it made me mad that Viet Nam Vets demontrated. Since they had fought the good fight, it was their right. Damn that war.
Part one: You need to understand that Viet Nam was a terrible situation our shit ass Government got America into. I have never for a moment believed that the Vet's were ever degrading their fellow military "family", but rather the fact our shit ass Government got America involved in the senseless conflict know as Viet Nam. And that many American soldiers were sacrificing their lives for some unknown reason.
Part two: I should have said "bogus" reason. To end this piece of jargon, let me just say I do not feel that the majority of the '60s Vets ever turned their back on their fellow military mate, but rather denounced the action's our Government was taking.....
And now that i do notice, You do have a thing for the male rectum, or Arse" as you call it. You even told Country Joe ... 'Up yours'....... Go back to your monkey and get AIDS................. Homo.
tell me about your brilliant epiphany regarding the destruction of american culture, and then maybe think about how every generation has had this exact same freaking thought and its never any worse than before, just different.
Has anyone else ever noticed that at 2:25 they go from saying "Do waca, do waca..." in the background to "psychedelic, psychedelic...". I always seem to notice these things more when I'm high.
just because the war is stupid does not mean we should not support the troops 100%. they are the ones risking their life, whether its a stupid war or not
@EvilDeadHateCrew It seems most people still do not know the difference between not supporting a war and not supporting the troops. (Or, for that matter, between not supporting the President and not supporting the troops. I may have lost a job due to the "Defend America, Impeach Bush" bumper sticker on my car. I had a lead worker who had her two sons and daughter in the military.)
No, you see, I support the men who are risking their lives out there. They fight for pride and glory and what they believe in. That is admirable. I just don't like the guy who made martyrdom and self-sacrifice of proud good men and women important for the sake of the nations best. And then the fact that more soldiers take their own life when they come home than actually dies on the battlefield.
Sorry for interrupting. Didn't mean to piss anyone off.
@EvilDeadHateCrew It's the universal soldier, he really is to blame. Look up Tolstoy, as he wondered what set of idiots would lie outside freezing without shoes in the bitterest of Russian winters while their officers ate smoked pork in the comfort of heated tents. Without soldiers, who count as much to them as so many plastic ducks, the officers wouldn't do one god damn thing! It's the universal soldier that enables governments and generals to declare war.
@phddddd many thanks to the soldiers that answer the call, such may not be said of those who command them. and use them unwisely. but no fault should be ascribed to the simple soldier. they were there when they were needed, and willing to pay the ultimate price.

just because the war is stupid does not mean we should not support the troops 100%. they are the ones risking their life, whether its a stupid war or not

@EvilDeadHateCrew

@tl52 I completely agree. Respect the soldiers always but not always the politicians who send them into harms way for stupid reasons.
