On a more positive note I'd like to say Kesha is catchy as heck not my fav but enjoy listening to some songs. And since its seems all of you actually look for music there is a plentiful amount of great cultured music of any genre in America. Pop culture if u dont see the reference already is a part of culture so Kesha in certain ways can be considered a cultured listen ; ). Praise to black music yo its influence is every where even in Keshas sound.
I grew up on this music, it has real talent and soul.. unlike the music thats out now, no on needs talent to be in the music industry anymore it's all computers I cant even listen to a regular music channel without hearin some bs song with no talent... it's so lame
PFFFT, Dizzy's ALREADY one hundred times BETTER than Ke$ha! Ke$ha's just a sell-out, but Dizzy's a unique musician! His puffed up cheeks and his bent trumpet are highly significant compared to Ke$ha's shitty autotune. I'd go for jazz and classical music over today's horrendous pop music anyday!
@gianS2021 I think it was NEW WAVE. But im not certain because New Wave hasn't been released on cd yet. I'm not sure how this track was put on to youtube. still pretty damn awesome
@SpontaneousJunk He's not dead...what happens is that garbage music have killed the good music...That's why WE don't hear about Dizzy's music as often as we should...But Good comment on remembering Diz....
@jarijuhani1 I can take an educated guess as to the personnel here, as I had a cassette called "Dizzy Gillespie: Compact Jazz" when I was in high school; needless to say that cassette did not survive adulthood because I played it so much.
The flute player is Leo Wright, who switches to alto sax later. Charlie Persip plays drums, George Duvivier plays bass, and a young Kenny Barron on piano.
@writesdave is jazz part of school curriculum in the states? i am accustomed to the idea that you have formal music education for marching band... is it some schools? some teachers only?
@14luisalonso Some schools take jazz seriously, others don't. And really, some schools take music in general more seriously than others. I got lucky in that respect with some very good music teachers, and a pair of musically minded parents who extended my education beyond the classroom.
@writesdave A lot of schools don't take jazz seriously. Don't make the assumption that I'm ridiculous or incredibly radical, but they don't because jazz music is that of the African-American culture. The elements of jazz are straight from the motherland and a lot of the legends of jazz are of the African-American persuasion (Duke, Basie, Bird, Trane, Miles, etc.), and to some schools that's just like "Ooh. Well then... Since it's something black people created, we can write it off.
@musicmanson i don't think it's that as much as it is most schools look down on the arts in general, so most programs don't recieve the funding neccessary to provide jazz programs, marching band programs, AND concert programs. they're forced to make cuts and jazz requires a more advanced educator to have a good program so it usually gets cut first...
@tydydpony93 And schools are stupid and don't want to hire that educator. So you end up getting a band that doesn't swing at all. But still, if they want to cut a jazz program, they need to cut a human relationships class or something stupid like that.
@musicmanson I think American schools take jazz very seriously. How else can we explain the massive influx of young jazz musicians into the market of the music business. It is then that the graduating class realizes the sad truth that Americans, whether black or white, don't take jazz seriously because they lack ears and musical intelligence.
@do1625 I don't. Some do, but where I went, we didn't put as much into our jazz programs as we did into the other programs. And I will definitely agree that it takes musical intelligence and ears. But schools don't take those with that intelligence and help them refine their skills as they would if they were gifted in say, math or English or something. Even for concert band, they'll tell you to audition for the youth symphonic band/orchestra but won't tell you about the jazz opportunities.
@musicmanson Let me tell you something, I'm in my school's jazz band and for our concert this summer, we were playing right after the intermediate band. I have respect for all music played in my school, but on the night of the concert, I was set off. When the inter. band went up to play kesha's tik tok, everyone in the auditorium started screaming and shouting and cheering loud as ever, when we went up, we played this song, and all we got was a loud boo. is there something wrong here or what?
@PalkaSvechi What you"re saying is true. It's a sign of the downfall of society where illiteracy and general ignorance are praised as cool. Dizzy was a man who's music represented art in it's coolest & highest form, no wonder a microcosm of the general population would these days go crazy over Kesha.
@PalkaSvechi Jazz was more popular back then because the songs being improvised were well known. Nowadays, you either have to suck it up and play something that goes with the times or just play for those that "get it". At my local jazz bar, there aren't many people that know what standards are being played, but they readily get into it once they jazz up radiohead songs.
@PalkaSvechi Nah, there is nothing wrong with promoting inferior musicians to give them inspiration to improve. It is equally dangerous for a semi-professional player to desire attention and glory for oneself. Humility brings a desire to improve in the talented. Check yourself. Tell yourself, I can always play better.
@headshrink1 As much as I agree with what you have said, kesha's music doesn't needs more promotion than it already has. The goal should be to allow kids to appreciate art music (art, classical) in its own right and using jazz as a tool for promoting pop songs is devaluing jazz. I guess I just feel uneasy thinking about music programs promoting overexposed crap music lol- even if it does inspire people to improve!
@PalkaSvechi That's why it's pop. Taste takes time. Not saying one is better than the other it's just that Key-$-sha gets more time on the radio so she has a bigger fan base with people that don't make an active effort to find music they really like.
@akrauss100 the general public will still appreciate jazz, but they dnt connect with it as much. Most musicians look at jazz as an etude, rather than a music tho (unless they are jazz musicians).
@PalkaSvechi - There is a reason why this song is still a classic after more than 40 years. Because it's world class music. Not taking anything away from Tik Tok, but that seems to be the popular choice for school bands right now. Keep on playing well! The accolades will come!!!
@PalkaSvechi I feel your pain, brother. We had to follow our school's dance team who did "Fireworks" by Katy Perry (an admittedly decent tune). They got a standing ovation. We, the Jazz band, came up and did an arrangement of Dizzy Gillespie's "Manteca," and were greeted with half hearted applause and one good "Yeah..." Could it be that music is taking a turn?
@PalkaSvechi That's fucked up, my man. The bullshit that people appreciate these days. If only they knew that their songs were influenced by this stuff...
@PalkaSvechi Man, even if they didn't like or recognize the song, booing is just rude. They should have shown their support and appreciation for your hard work.
@PalkaSvechi "Samba de uma nota só" é um dos clássicos da Bossa Nova. Movimento musical brasileiro dos anos 1960 que chegou até o jazz. Que influenciou músicos com Dizzy Gillespie o outros.
@PalkaSvechi Yeah, it's what you call a shit audience. I play the organ and if I play some cool bossa nova on my old Wurlitzer 4300 organ nobody gets it, but if I play a Hammond B3 like Jimmy Smith I'm suddenly Mr. Cool. Personally I'll take Walter Wanderley over Jimmy Smith. That whole Hammond B3 jazz organ sound is very cliche' sounding anymore. I love the Hammond for old standards from the 20's and 30's before Jimmy Smith. The world of music should be expanding and getting better not worse!
@PalkaSvechi I guess it is with music like everything else. The need to have what you are used to and blend in, and do what your friends do, is greater than the need for some quality. It's like powdered sauce. The "kids" never tasted the real thing. If you busted yourself whipping up a real Bearnaise they would complain it don't taste like they are used to. Dizzy is the real thing. No crappy autotune needed.
When he was in his thirties he was hit by a car whilst riding a bike. This resulted in him not being able to reach certain notes. A court however only awarded him USD1000 as a result of his high earnings.
Something like that would not happen today - I hope.
I meant on the song not in the whole world. But that is nice to know you play. I play the flute clarinet and guitar i just got a real book been having fun with it.
@thumpasaurusrex I'm sorry you don't have a sense of humor. Yes, that obviously means I'm homosexual. You have very logical trains of thought. I definitely don't recommend cognitive therapy.
As for your insult, how is "limp dick" supposed to be insulting? Would you rather I have a hard on while I listen to Jazz?
@F45B My dick gets hella hard when i listn to Jazz, so yea maybe somthing is wrong with you, but yea my words were a little harsh so I do appologize. I do have a sense of humor but i just thought your joke was gay. Again im sorry i was out of line with my comment. lets all just kick back with our hard on's for jazz or limp dicked jazz listners and enjoy one note samba. With LEO WRIGHT ON THE FLUTE.
i play bass, guitar and sax and i gotta say dizzy is one of my idols. i try to solo like he does but on sax. i played this live on thursday it went great
The PIONEER, The LEGEND, Simply The DIZ. I love you Brotha, I know you are in the other realm making cats better and putting a smile on their faces as well.
I thought the business with the cheeks was that he had blown so hard, so long that he detached some of the muscles - if you look closely, it is not just that his cheeks are puffed out.
I'm pretty sure that a Samba, like this, shouldn't technically be classified as Bossa Nova, as a bossa is slower, probably analogous to calling something swing or a ballad, but this has that straight eighth feel. Anyways great tune, gotta love Dizzy
It funny because the puffing of a trumpeters cheeks is normally an indication of fatigue, but Diz made that his trademark. It's like he's playing a joke on everyone. Still. I Love Diz for that.
@bopkick5 Is this the band from the "French Riviera" recording? If so, that's Lalo Schifrin on piano. It seems odd, though, that there wouldn't be a guitar on this tune. Elec Bacsik was all over the "Riviera" album.
hi frend . youre right dat iz lalo schifrin on da keys. . it iz da same band as dat album you mention but no guitar . dis paticular tune tho iz not on de french riviera album az ya probly know . but wot an album "dizzy on the french riviera" is eh??
i wonder if those 11 people feel dizzy

The flute player is Leo Wright, who switches to alto sax later. Charlie Persip plays drums, George Duvivier plays bass, and a young Kenny Barron on piano.

@F45B I meant on the song you limp dick fagot.
thumpasaurusrex 1 year ago
@thumpasaurusrex I'm sorry you don't have a sense of humor. Yes, that obviously means I'm homosexual. You have very logical trains of thought. I definitely don't recommend cognitive therapy.
As for your insult, how is "limp dick" supposed to be insulting? Would you rather I have a hard on while I listen to Jazz?
F45B 1 year ago
@F45B My dick gets hella hard when i listn to Jazz, so yea maybe somthing is wrong with you, but yea my words were a little harsh so I do appologize. I do have a sense of humor but i just thought your joke was gay. Again im sorry i was out of line with my comment. lets all just kick back with our hard on's for jazz or limp dicked jazz listners and enjoy one note samba. With LEO WRIGHT ON THE FLUTE.

I thought the business with the cheeks was that he had blown so hard, so long that he detached some of the muscles - if you look closely, it is not just that his cheeks are puffed out.

i think it was a condition that he always had actually

I'm pretty sure that a Samba, like this, shouldn't technically be classified as Bossa Nova, as a bossa is slower, probably analogous to calling something swing or a ballad, but this has that straight eighth feel. Anyways great tune, gotta love Dizzy

I've been to his hometown in Cheraw, SC. They have a statue of him playing the duel horned trumpet and the cheeks look just like that.
Cheraw is about 115 miles SW of Raleigh, NC on US 1.

this is some straight up and down good muzak!

It funny because the puffing of a trumpeters cheeks is normally an indication of fatigue, but Diz made that his trademark. It's like he's playing a joke on everyone. Still. I Love Diz for that.

If it ain't James Moody then who else? Moody's my man, flute or tenor or alto - great foil to the brilliance of Diz.

@bopkick5 Is this the band from the "French Riviera" recording? If so, that's Lalo Schifrin on piano. It seems odd, though, that there wouldn't be a guitar on this tune. Elec Bacsik was all over the "Riviera" album.
tedwilsonjr 2 years ago 2
hi frend . youre right dat iz lalo schifrin on da keys. . it iz da same band as dat album you mention but no guitar . dis paticular tune tho iz not on de french riviera album az ya probly know . but wot an album "dizzy on the french riviera" is eh??

You're the 1st young german person I ever found who enjoys bossa nova.
Normally, bossa nova is tracked for thoses who are over 40's.
Anyway, this is a great performance.

anyone who enjoys good music loves bossa nova. age doesn't matter. and ''yes'' it's a hell of a performance!
