The CATOBAR carriers are making a comeback in the UK in the shape of the Queen Elizabeth class carriers they will be one and a half times the size of this
@BRU11ROAD Sharkey Ward reckons that stovl is better for the UK. He flew from both modern Ark Royal's so i'll go with his assessment. Catobar is con dem cameron's political pish; as usual with this damn government (yes deliberately used a small g). The QE class are being fitted with cats and traps to make them easier to sell - but I hope i'm wrong cos we'll really need em. Stovl has a performance penalty; but the train/maintaining of Pilots is far far easier.
It was both budgetary and political. Any type of capital ship was regarded as an instrument of imperialism and this was a time when Britain fled from her Empire, routed, not by an enemy with weapons, but by modern times and lefty leanings. Operationally, the Ark was an achievement; F4-K Phantoms were no small plane to fly off a medium sized flight deck.
I don't understand why the British Gov't. phased out CATOBAR aviation. Did they figure that Britain didn't need to operate fleet carriers, as long as America did?
wow they didn't even had the lynx yet

British phantoms are unique with the taller front landing gear, than those of the US

I don't think this footage is from "Sailor". The Air officer is a different person.

It is to the fact that the documentary was shown in 1976 and thanks for your comments.

In the title of this video I read - "HMS Ark Royal in Oct 1970"
But was this not shown by the BBC in 1976 ?
Is this a mistake here. Can you explain ?

Wouldn't like to be the guy steering the Gannet at 2:37. Bit close to the prop for my taste.
