  • So beautiful, too beautiful. Imagine this with percussion!!! Killer.

  • Yeah!! :D

  • This is cool man .......

  • I thought that was marcus miller to

  • lol, i straight up thought that was Marcus Miller.

  • HOLY SHIT, that is awesome.

  • BEAUTIFUL..!

  • Espectacular

  • @Gateize like it states in the title the song is "FOUR" by Miles Davis

  • what's the name of this song? Can someone please tell me?

  • HA..nice. They're having fun and it comes across.

  • Just goes to show how many underrated players are out there.

  • Great

  • to the critics...remember, this was totally improvised during a break setting up for an evening show...just two great musicians (Uncle and Nephew) ,that love and respect each other, making beautiful music.

  • This is GREAT! I can listen to this all day over a coffee. Makes me want to get my horn out and join them! BTW, is that a Mark VI that Peanuts is playing?

  • i love this...it's like two people telling a story at the same time - you can almost hear the actual words...completely different experience from miles davis' version (which i also love). so sweet and sincere. ahh...=] music.

  • this is an amazing song.

  • Ya'll should really do your homework on Mr. Whalum, 1995 Joey DeFrancesco: Live at the 5 Spot, Impressions feat. ( a flu strickened/fever having ) Kirk Whalum, any of Kirks solo projects, listen to his phrasing, his note choices, smooth/contemporary, whatever, listen to what he plays, & you'll see why people like Brecker ( r.i.p ), Kenny Garrett respect him so much. He's truly one of the most well rounded saxophonist in the industry, period!! can he play changes?? wth, seriously, research!!

  • I was there when this was done...we were setting up for a show that evening and during a break Peanuts and Kirk just started jammin...this is music as it happens...the whole day and evening with these two incredible gentlemen was magic!

  • I like Kirks playing...but this does not seem like it would be his forte. Then again, I know plenty of good modern straight ahead players who cannot play smooth very well, but no smooth players that can't at least play a convincing bebop solo. Kirk though...I dunno. Great sound?

  • music snobs, gotta love'em!!...lol

  • kirk whalum is not playing the changes

  • Can he?

  • probably not

  • Lolz. I don't understand how some professional "jazz" musicians never take the time to learn something so fundamental.

  • the quotations say everything

  • It's About language baby. I loved this conversation! Yea!

  • rewind , cool

  • This is the real deal. No doubt! Great to see a family together soaked with talent and willingness to work hard.

  • This is the real thang!

  • This is wonderful! Thanks!

  • Some of you people are just plain ignorant. The "Old Dude" is a Jazz legend. He is Kirk Whalum's uncle. How many people can perform when they are 80 years old? You should give him a big round of applause, instead of making fun of him or putting him down. I know Peanuts personally, and he is a very gracious gentleman. I have spent many evenings listening to him in Jazz clubs singing, playing piano and playing sax. Please don't make fun of him. He is a wonderful person.

  • Buenísimos. Gracias.

  • grrrroink, you're so right! Sometimes I really wonder, are these people for real? Perhaps the comments come all the way from Venus???

  • Don't you just love it when two masters just lay down some shit that's just so smooth you can't even believe it!

Great stuff!! Never heard Whalum play so mellow either!

  • Funny that the old one forgets it's Four and thinks it's On Green Dolphin Street. Such a temptation there after Eflat minor. )))

  • Don't fool yourself, he could've did it on purpose...

  • Come on, it's no insult. He could, of course. But even if he didn't do that on purpose, even if he just went on with chords from a different song, it doesn't diminish his brilliance.

  • Very cool! I love this tune.

  • >> Smooth Jazz is ok,

    Smooth jazz is crap.

  • This is really good. I love how the two saxes work together perfectly, riffing off of eachother, taking the parts of a big band. Truely awe-inspiring muscians. Fantastic.

  • I loved listening to this video. You guys play very well. Nice duet.

  • Great playing, true masters.

  • a lot of jazz names are kinda random its kida funny at times

  • Its copy writed by Miles Davis but written by Eddie(Cleanhead) VInson.

    P.S. Your a Douche

  • Yeah I agree he's pretty tight... He's a true musician.

  • You obviously don't know much about music. I pity you for that statement though you still call yourself a musician. I may not play piano but I know who Beethoven is. Your joke (at least I hope it is) is musically sacriligious. Do you have any idea where smooth jazz comes from and how it developed? Do u know the ONE man who changed jazz more than 5 times? Do you know the guy that put Wayne Shorter, Michael Brecker, Herbie Hancock, Kenny Garrett, Marcus Miller, Cannonball...on the map? Miles Davis

  • cannonball is debatable.. but yea miles is in almost every style.

  • @mambojazz1 Whom are you talking about?

  • Miles Davis was a jazz trumpet player. He was a legend, how do u not know who he is? Every jazz musician should know who he is.

Smooth Jazz is ok, and Kenny G is.....well, i wont get into that. But if ur a jazz musician, u gotta listen to the "real" jazz, how it all started.

  • :o !!! HOW CAN'T YOU KNOW ABOUT MILES ???????????!!!!!! He's a Legend ! I'm not going to say that is a Jazz Legend, he's just a MUSIC Legend, period. We, musicians, owe him so much !!

  • wtf you call yourself a saxplayer and you dont know miles! go kill yourself

  • XDXDXDXDXD OMG LOLOLOL

I like how comments on youboob are sooo reasonable.

  • u are joking right?

  • number1saxophone = ignorant idiot?

  • number1saxophone...ur videos explain how uneducated you are as an individual. YOU FUCKING SUCK...FACT!

  • Lyrics by Jon Hendricks:

Of the wonderful things you get out of life, there are four

That may not be many but nobody needs anymore

Of the many facts making the list of life, truth takes the lead

For to relax, knowing the gist of life, it's truth you need

Oh the second is honor, and happiness makes number three

Baby when you put 'em together you know what the last one must be

So to truth honor and happiness, add one thing more

That's the wonderful, wonderful love that will make it four.

  • The Jon Hendricks lyrics are fantastic. Said so much in so few words. I want to write some music to go with the lyrics. Where do I write to get permission or to pay royalties?

  • oh yeah!

  • thanks to Rendezvousmusic

    riccardino23-playlist n 3- Classic and Jazz Music

  • I HAVE 2 MEET THIS FAMILY!!!!!! I just love whalum music

  • I stay in memphis...kirk was just sitting in the library reading...I apologized for interrupting him and told him that I just wanted to say hi...he then asked me what my name was and we had a conversation about music, life, God, books, etc...he's such a cool guy

  • incredible.

  • what dvd did you get this from? I have to buy more jazz dvds for my teaching.

  • He's in Nashville a lot - we love him.

  • Yea man, that's how it's done. After watching some high school bands play four, this is amazingly refreshing.

  • That was awesome!!!

  • watch?v=T9r4wK4FBiM

  • tooo sick....love it

  • good stuff!

  • If you want to hear another wonderful sax player, put this into the search box:

    "Bársony Bálint legjobb pillanatai"

He is a hungarian sax player, truly amazing!

  • Wow!! Finally, I get a chance to hear Peanuts. When I was a college student in the late 50s, Wendell P. Whalum (himself, who was a fantastic classical organist and whose feet were almost as fast as his hands) used to tell me about his brother, "Peanuts", who lived in St. Louis, and played saxophone. I also used to read about him in Downbeat Magazine but never heard him until now... and I thoroughly enjoyed it. ....a lot of musical talent in the Whalum family. Thanks for posting this clip.

  • @toobopped2beep Cool

  • Hugh is HUGE! A huge talent and an awesome human being. Would like more recordings by him. His self-titled is gorgeous music. Need more by this guy!

  • 2 Great players having fun together. Great playing too.

  • what mouthpiece does kirk play on?

  • He plays a Sugal Kirk Whalum Model on Tenor

  • Vandoren S25

  • Peanuts sounds great!

Does anyone know what mouthpiece Peanuts plays on his alto horn ?

  • yeah thats so cool!!

  • whos Peanuts?

I have never heard of him

    does he have cds out

    he sounds amazing

  • yeah, he's got a self-titled album "Hugh 'Peanuts' Whalum." He's from St. Louis. A legend that never got his fair share of the spotlight. He played with Nat King Cole, Sonny Stitt, Count Basie, Miles Davis, and the list goes on.

  • so he is related to kirk

    Dad or grandpa?

  • uncle actually

  • @Rendezvousmusic I watched Gospel According to Jazz 3 and kirk whalum said that was his dad peanuts

  • Peanuts is Kirk's Uncle

  • Fucking rad, man. Love it!

  • I don't see how people could place rap over jazz. Pshaw.

  • ...I won't say that your comment is stupid, but I definately invite you to Listen to Steve Coleman's work with Hip Hop artists. Or even Greg Osby's raise (you can find it on youtube). This is some food for your musicality.

Love that tune and it's cool to hear it played by two monsters of the Whalum family :)

  • Awesome vid!

  • GREAT!!!!

  • oh my god!!! Did you hear the sound of Peanut's alto? amazing!!! he is sooo good I just became his fan! but what I find is all his vocal recording. he should pick his sax and blow more!!!!

  • Amazing...!!

    Peanuts rocks!

  • Peanuts is fantastic! Saw him last night with Botti!

  • That was so Awsome, I wish that was on a CD

  • Interesting. Kirk is a bad, bad man (duh) and Peanuts can definitely play, but it just sounds to me like he's confusing the harmonic motion of the songs for something it's not. It becomes pretty clear of you hum the root motion during his solo, and especially if you play the chords.

  • Kirk is.............Blessed!!!!

  • GREAT JAMMIN'!!!! YOU GO GUYS!!! I say Kirk Live in San Diego last year... he's great!!

  • man all the whalums are bad! even the new generation.

  • I wish Peanuts had more recordings. That kind refined musicianship in the traditional Jazz is rare these days. Its not fair that all that talent resides in the Whalum family but I'm glad it does.

  • Agreed. I think there is only one recording isn't it?

  • I'm afraid so. Although he's played with some giants and he is very well known in the jazz community most of his work never got recorded.

  • Muy buen ambiente, muy buena interpretación.

  • awesome sounds from both.

  • just fabous jamming

  • kirk whaul is awsome [=

  • great
