well I am 5-7 and 227 so I am morbidly obese and have around 10% fat. Yet someone else can be 6' and 200 lbs and have 25% bodyfat and be at a more healthy weight.
Yeah i did suck in the gut a little. I also stated that i had a bit of a gut. You've gotta admit, there's quite a bit of difference between me, and some guy that needs to have a flatbed truck take him to hospital.
I didn't know anything about the BMI but someone told me to look it up and that I should follow that. HAR HAR HAR! As soon as it said i was near obese I knew instantly BMI is crap. WHY DOES ANYONE USE IT!!??
Ah, the BMI... Total malarkey. It was developed by a Belgian mathematician over a century ago who was just trying to tie together the height and weight statistics of the time. It wasn't even meant to tell Belgians at the time what they were supposed to weight, let alone tell people in modern times whether or not they're in shape. If the system only "works" for sedentary people, then it's already meaningless. If you don't exercise, you're not going to be healthy, so the chart isn't needed at all.
how many people in the study were athletes? ...anyway, i do agree that BMI should not be the only factor in determining obesity... however, it can't be denied that obesity has become a huge problem in the US - i think that's the important thing to keep in mind...
yeah what you are saying is true but the BMI is not designed for athletes or pregnant women or older people it is designed for average joe and is not fully set in stone
BMI has never claimed that it takes into account the amount of fat vs muscle, but for the average guy who dose not work out that much its a good indication if they got to much fat or not. If you have a BMI of 30 and youre not fat, I dont think anyone would call you fat because you would probably look like a body builder or a 100m world record holder in track.
yea my bode weight index rose too when i started working out and its still rising... i lost a bit of weight and gained more muscle.. the test tells you you are fat even if you fat percent is 2%
Interesting point there. However,BMIs were developed to meet the average population,of which most are not professional athletes. BMIs are statistical measures to determine one's fat percentage. It is a means for people to compare themselves with the general population and to see changes over this percentage progressively. One shouldn't take BMIs as a 100% accurate measure and it is true that they should take other factors into account, but people need to know more or less 'where they stand'.
I've heard of cyclists that get heart atrophy and therefore shortened life-expectancy. The pro-sports players you mention may be reducing their life-expectancy by carrying so much muscle and eating so much protein for so long it irreversably strains their kidneys and livers. Having said that I'd probably chop my right arm off to score a try in the rugby world cup.
You should take your diving boots off before you weigh yourself next time! I see your yang, but just to add a bit of yin, all these athletes have organs which may be under quite a bit of strain.
Cool. I am the same height and weight as you (almost, 5'9" and 89 kg) but have always wondered "surely I can't really be obese?" I run, swim, hike and body build and I am fairly fit if a bit overwieght.. not obese though. Body fat percentage is much more useful.
This is very interesting..I wish more people would see this.
My sister who was moderately overweight (10-20 lbs overweight) a few years ago, and she noticed her physical exam said "obesity" as a health indicator on her doctor's records.
She came home, cried for a week and put on 12 lbs. That's the problem....telling people they're fat, so they live the hype.

You should announce commercials and/or movies.
And you should be able to tell if you're obese by looking in a mirror with a normal attitude, not something that would make you anorexic.

Thanks, Miss Kitty. No, I'm not a teacher; I'm a physicist and an engineer ... basically a rocket scientist.
