When do you eat? What do you wear? Did you all walk to this place, or burn fossil fuel to get there? We are in N. Am. Not much hunting, skinning, foraging going on here. Either give us the total solution, or nothing. this is my fifth and final video that I've watched, and things keep getting more absurd. Yes, I'm a soft underbellied N. American, all my human parts atrophied to the hilt. I was born into this. Just point me to the WHOLE answer.
What WalMart does to American communities and to their overseas workers is incredibly sick and evil; check out the documentary Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price.
All of you are missing the point of this I think. It's performance art plain and simple, designed to make you THINK about shopping and why we consume th way we do. To me, it makes quite a statement. To you, it's just plain stupid. Like any good art: it means different things to different people.

I like consuming. It makes me happy. If I didnt consume I wouldnt have this computer to watch this consumerism video. I say the environment can take care of itself.
zaazi123, you don't need to have stinky pits. Check out Kiss My Face Fragrance Free Liquid Rock Roll-on Deodorant. I buy it from my local health food store. Works great and it doesn't contain all of that nasty stuff.
Is food we need to live on crap? What about affordable medicine, deodorant, toilet paper, or soap? What if you break a lamp and need a new one? What if you need school supplies? You can find crap at any store, but you can also find stuff you need. How dare companies give us places to shop! Screw all of these companies for making our lives easier! We need to quit our jobs, grow our own food, go hunting with spears, and live in caves.
A society can use industrial production to produce needed goods without profit and without becoming conspicuous consumers living off the backs of slave labor at home and abroad, buying things for the sake of having bought them, trying to fill the void advertising says buying will fill, but of course can't--but it's not really supposed to or people would stop buying.
the point is we get all this while the people in the countries that make our stuff suffer, how are we in the west superior to the rest of the world that they should suffer for us? you need to start thinking rather than reacting to anything that thhreatens your way of life
You need to start thinking about how places like Walmart are giving people in dirt-poor countries a job. They could be paid more and their conditions could be improved, but until that happens, at least they have a job. There are a lot of people without jobs, including people in the USA.
thewirrow, it would help if you didn't spell like a 9 year old girl, but I believe you're trying to say that if Walmart disappeared, everyone on the planet would have a good paying job. Keep dreaming.
thats not what i was trying to say.. i asked u a question which u didn't answer. do you realise why these people have no jobs in the first place? do you understand how corporations like walmart create poverty in the first place? do you know why farmers lose their lands? do you know what export processing zones are?
Yes, thewirrow, an export processing zone is a place where some limitations are lifted to attract business. These workers will eventually be replaced with cheap intelligent robots. Once that happens, they'll beg for their old jobs back, no matter how bad the conditions were. Having a crappy job is better than starving with no job.
yeah but we need to look at what thes companies are doing to the environment and how fairly they are treating these people, surely saying they are helping these people is not enough, they are fellow humans too and we share the responsibility and planet with everyone
btw i dont use deoderant coz it is full of chemicals that give us cancer straight into our armpits and lamp? we need a lamp to live do we? they make us think we need these things and they sure did a great job on you :)
An Asian peasant who labors through all of his waking hours, with tools created in Biblical times—a South American aborigine who is devoured by piranha in a jungle stream—an African who is bitten by the tsetse fly—an Arab whose teeth are green with decay in his mouth—these do live with their natural environment, but are scarcely able to appreciate its beauty. Try to tell a Chinese mother, whose child is dying of cholera: Should one do everything one can? Of course not.
Try to tell a Russian housewife, who trudges miles on foot in sub-zero weather in order to spend hours standing in line at a state store dispensing food rations, that America is defiled by shopping centers, expressways and family cars.
Wait, how exactly am I selfish and/or greedy? And how does that contribute to terrorism? If I'm reading you right, you're agreeing with Bush and other yahoos when they say that terrorists hate our way of life (assuming we're all selfish and greedy).
Wait, our "institutional role"? That sounds more pseudo-intellectual than anything. Here's some actual logic, though. Let's say a man knows a way to get more resources from a plot of land than any oher person, and he employs other people to do the work, but he takes 3/4ths for himself because he was the one who figured things out. Is he stealing? If not, then it logically follows that people can consume more than others and still not steal.
I'll rape your mother. And deep down inside, she'll actually be happy because she'll finally be getting some attention while you're off on one of your moralistic crusades.
I don't get the point of it and it's more of a waste of time on your part. Did you consider your carbon footprint to get all those people pushing empty carts in the store?
Dumb, I wish I could charge you for wasting 2 min of my life.
i totally feel that we can support ourselves, we can make our own cars, computers, cell phones, advanced medicines, refrigerators and every else that allows people to live past 30 by ourselves with no need for any specialization or distributions methods, it makes so much sense.
hey cactus bob, maybe they walked or cycled. maybe you should too, get your mind out of that four wheeled weapon of mass destruction and enter the real world.
thats really stupid ! guess what , you bought something anyway ...... the gas to get there , wear on your car, roads ect. nobody cares ! your not changeing any minds there . just stay home for the day , enjoy your life invite a few frends try to tone down there lifestyle . help them to understand ..... one person at a time
For fucks sake people. If you want to truly help the world, don't buy anything. Instead, support yourself. I may not be living that way yet, but I'm working towards it.
Yes, my friend! But there are those who need to be thought of. That is, the elderly, the young, the sick, the mentally ill. But other than that, yeah.
It would be a miracle, as Wal-mart employees are barely hanging onto the little they have. I would love to see them revolt, but they live in fear because there are no safety nets now.
Fourth this is not a protest per se as you will see above this is an awareness creation mechanism not unlike a protest but different all the same.
Fifth while we all appreciate your input I would encourage you to be constructive in your criticism, perhaps you can help people of interest out in the world with helpful means of connecting with zombie consumers.
simple you need a few people (as many as tweleve would be good) find some empty shopping carts and walk around the whirl-mart, singing always helps and keep it positive in a way that engages people

Some organizations have something to say, while others simply have to say something.
I think Adbusters is just the latter; raging against something they can't accurately identify and proposing nothing in replacement.

You just get in the way of actual coustomers and cause them to spend more time shopping!
Its not like you are impacting the profits of the company that much either!
Try find a real way to protest against them instead of wasting time!
Fodmaster 4 years ago
First my friend attempt please to spell customers correctly.
Second what you are proposing makes it very difficult to create awareness. We are not able to educate people without interacting with them.
Third as the video demonstrates consumers all to often behave like zombies in the stores that they frequent.
