I think Steppenwolf is underrated by people.. Born to be wild and Magic Carpet Ride are the only two songs people think they are famous for, they have many more. I don't think I have ever come across a bad Steppenwolf song, SW rules!
just where did he get those funny little ideas that the people could take the power back once they gave it up? could it be......SATAN? Poor naive idealistic bastard. Great music.
i rather the kids smoking pot and reading abou the truth than becoming a soldier for the UN. one day they just might turn you in to the asian teacher for using the n word at home. the hippies were on the right track but they didn't have the right information and too many drugs.
we need more political action songs. Even with a dem president it's unbelievable how the gov is fucking us over I hope the hand that feeds can still take away. they are about to take everything away and create a nation of slaves.
they try to make distinctions between east & west to make the doors come off as not hippie as some precursor to so called lou reed nyc.imho, i don't see that the doors were apart from this hippie dippie thing at all, in fact i would go so far as to say everyone was caught up in this hippie dippie thing the beatles let it be album was there pop rsvp. in any case alot of shit was going down. and now the yuppies have taken it all away because they know they are toby to massa. smd.
@revrobcolon That's exactly the same for me. Someone gave me that record and an 8 track of steppenwolf live. I was 11 yrs old. I lost the record but recently found it on ebay.
I saw Steppenwolf and Jimi Hendrix Experience in the same week! I remember Nick St. Nicholas had a Rickenbacker Bass Amp (a piggyback), never saw another like it. Noel Redding, dual Sunn 2000S heads with 8 large Sunn cabs,!
Song and band are timless! Could be Govt., Enron, BP, or any other issue referenced. Can't get over what a kick ass dummer Jerry Edmonton was. He had power and style in his drumming.
This song perfectly defines the culture of corporate greed today. The baby boomers listened to this and identified with it , but now they have the BMWs, the huge Houses in the suburbs, the Boats, the Suvs and all the material possesions, and have sold out ! The rest of us are still struggling, and identify with the meaningful lyrics of this song.
@sledrunners it's really simple.either you have your stuff or your stuff has you!the greedy of today don't care how they get it but giving it to the working man is generally not what they do.
lynn8356 I've always liked listening to Steppenwolf since I was a kid in the '60s. Their music is timeless. Their songs have as much relevance today as then.
Steppenwolf outdid itself by posting 3 top 10 hits right off the bat, and after Easy Rider, they were pretty much pegged as a "biker band". In point of fact, if one takes the time to get deeper into the discog, one finds that they covered a pretty damned broad spectrum of music-though one can hear echos of that Miss. Delta-as evidenced in this riff on Power Play...Steppenwolf was, as you note, marginalized by critics who hated anything that wasn't Dylan, The Band, CSNY or Jackson Brown.
I prefer the older live version played by John Kay & Sparrow, as heard on the "Early Steppenwolf" album. Mars Bonfire on guitar was way cool. Still, Larry Byrom's solo here is fantastic too.

I occasionally enjoy the sophomoric sound of Steppenwolf - wanka wanka retro porn guitar, lousy drumming and all. Posters here are probably aware that during their time, the arbiters of what was cool and hip had rejected Steppenwolf.
Especially Monster. Back in the late 60s when I was in jr high they were my band along with Creedance and the Airplane but I wanted to sound like John Kay.
first time i heard this i thought it was about my second ex-wife.. i guess its political rather than about women.. but this song is too brilliant! hehe., she didnt get the jag ~ and i love cruising to this song.. steppenwolf for the win..!

Another Steppenwolf song that was way ahead of it's time. We don't have bands like this anymore.

It isnt so much that they were ahead of time. But History repeats, because we never learn. We trust without verification or accountability.

Whenever Steppenwolf are mentioned Born to be Wild seems to be the start and finish, but Monster is a classic LP without a bad track
