what i find works well is if you let them have the rubber band and let them place it in the deck after you cut it, this way they think they have more control over you manipulating them and its takes some attention from your hands :)

Your finger break was done innacurately. The best method is instead of using the entire tip of the finger, to instead use the little pad of the pinky, in order to preserve the spot, but not make it quite as obvious, and give you better control.
