...interesting vid....I'm from Bucks County...and while I'm familiar with the Phila accent we don't have it up here, nor do we have the NY...we are in between...I'd say it is more Mainline or even a bit more British, definitely not an urban dialect...
I lived in Phill bawl for 21 years. I say everything right. I get mad when I'm told that I say water wrong. I say jawn 12 times a minute, and I'm proud.
The weird part is, this sounds completely normal. I never even knew there was such a thing as a Philly Accent until I researched it, I always thought everyone else just had an accent, lol...
@hateraide Did you read the other comments where this was addressed? Sorry dude, my fam has been in Philly over a century and it is where I was born and raised. Just because my accent is not the same exact accent as your family's doesn't mean I don't have a Philly accent. My vowels alone make that obvious. If you are interested in dialects you should read a book on linguistics, or check out this article for Philly specifically: citypaper . net / articles / 081497/ article008 . shtml
@hateraide if you were from philly you wouldn't be able to pick up a philly accent, i'm from north jersey, the real new jersey and i can blatantly hear her philly accent
@buckr02 I only lived in NJ for a few years between PA and VA. ;) I was born in Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and raised in South Philadelphia. See my other videos of my childhood home.
@buckr02 I've never met such a person but i'm sure they exist. Do remember though that there was some kind of mass exodus of Italian Americans from Philly to South Jersey over the past two decades, so it's possible some older Jersey folk might have been brought up in the city and still consider it home. ;) I don't blame them, South Jersey is a horrible place! (Sorry, it is!)
I been living in South Philly all my life 52 years, my father was the old school Italian immigrant, South Philly people that lived here long have a strong accents, my sisters, my nephews and nieces, you don't have a south philly accent.
@misschristine52 I am fourth generation South Philadelphia Italian American...My great-great-grandparents came to Philadelphia from Italy and my great-grandparents were bilingual in Italian and English. While it is true that I have "lost" much of my accent due to moving away from the region and being more 'educated' than my ancestors, I still speak with what linguists would consider the Philly dialect. Watch the other videos of me as a child!
NOt on no racsist shit but white people from philly saound different from the black people in PHILLY like we dont say yous guys and igles and no shit like that.
I'm from Texas and people think I'm from the atlantic region because I talk a bit faster than everyone else, not as fast as how you guys speak, and I don't have a hint of a southern accent.
I had a roommate who sounded just like this I could tell she was from the Philly area right away and I only live like, 2 hours away from Philly haha and I don't have that accent I'm pretty sure.
Philly does sound like Jersey a bit, its hard to tell the difference (I go to college with a lot of people from Philly & Jersey) its hard to tell. I don't live that far from Philly but I'm pretty sure I don't sound like that haha weird.
lol I also moved from philadelphia to northern VA To go to college and got a job in Va. People comment on my accent all the time. I got some weird looks when I asked an ice cream shop for jimmies on my ice cream. LOL hahahaha. man I got the munchies. i could really go for a hoagie.
The southern accent isn't heaviest in Virginia, assuming you're moving to the northern part of the state. Philly is kind of like the tip northern end of the Mid-Atlantic. So, actually, your accent can camouflage. There's little, if any, different between Philly and South Jersey, or other parts of the Deleware Valley in accents. That's why you kind of have a light southern tone to your voice. It relates to south Jersey and the rest of PA, DE, MD & northern VA, but not the rest of the Northeast.
how do you people say sure? is it not said "shore". and i think the only reason south philly people say iggles is cause they talk really fast. philly pronounces everything, besides "wooder" phonetically.
I live near Phillie, but not Phillie at all. But I talk exactly the way you do. I never noticed myself as having such an accent xD So, this is interesting. I didn't know that such a dialect is so obvious to others either.
wow..I grew up in Philly...I moved to Kansas..where everyone said I had an accent lol...but they never picked Philly they said I came from New Jersey or New York...too funny......but to me you sound normal no accent omg I miss Philly thank you for sharing
I think the most accurate way to describe the way Philadelphia people say "eagle" is "eegull"...in other words, Philly people "over-pronounce" their vowels...I know that people hate to be told about their own accent so I'll probably get thumbs down lol (I'm a linguist)
Aha, I had the exact opposite problem; when I visited Philly with my cousin, some people had trouble understanding me. People did the e=i thing with my name all the time. It took me hours of correcting people with no success to realize (or rilize? xD) that it was their accents, and they weren't just ignoring me.
my grandparents are from harrisberg, pa. they got the philly accent, i live with them so i hear it every day. they came to CA to live with my mom sis and i, they say wooder, "well sure" (shore) instead of 'yes'. my grandpa says "fact is..." more than most, is that common back east? 'fact is'? they also say "kurry" instead of kerry (my sister's name) and they call my mom "murideth" instead of "meridith" their Es tend to sound like Us ya know. and my other sis's name is Audrey, they say "oowdrey"
I don't think I say it "igle", but I have heard that before. It's fairly uncommon in most parts of Philly but you do hear it sometimes in the very strong South Philly accents. I think it is more commonly like "eigle".
Igle can be heard better in south philly, you can also really hear it when people from Camden County and Gloucester County in south Jersey speak it, I would think thats cause thats where the ancestors from the original Philly natives have been the longest.
Well..the Philly accent has a slight drawl to it at times, anyway. I know Philly originally (back in the 18th century) had a sizable Scots-Irish population. That's probably what causes the drawl. You see that in the Pine Barrens area of Jersey too. For the most part though, Philly's accent sounds more East Coast (or Mid-atlantic, I guess you could say) than southern.
This is ridiculous. Nobody ever says shit about how I talk, only some of the words I use. Generally I'm conscience of using jawn, or wooder or other pronunciations. I think we have a middle of the run accent. Nothing extreme like southerners or people from new england.
The interesting thing about accents that is that it's all in the eye of the beholder. For example, I would consider an English accent pretty "extreme" but people from England would consider mine extreme. I think it lacks consciouness to say otherwise...Maybe in your life and area, but not in general!
With that being said, the Philadelphia accent is one of the most studied American accents. It's a considered complex not because it's "strong" but because of vowel usage and thing such as dark L.
Im from Cali and I had a professor from Philly that would pronounce Orange, Rrange. His Philly isnt as bad as a Boston accent. Are we the only ones(West) that normally speak clear and proper American english.
@310Sole westcoast accents sound normal to you because you live with them, and they sound normal to other English speakers because most actors in television shows and movies try to mimic cali and certain canadian accents (depending on how they speak normally), people get used to hearing it so it sounds normal. there is no proper accent, people just speak the way they speak.
cool what part of philly u from? i wuz born and raised n north philly buh 4 sum reason peepz say i gotta down south accent n they dont believe im from north philly
I have a question. I'm from South Jersey (30 min drive to Philly), been there all of my life. My pronounciation of "our" is the same as "are". Is that regional or just improper?
Regional, in my experience, but over a pretty large region...as in, many parts of the USA. That being said, I do know people who pronounce it as "hour". (which is more correct, I suppose)
I didn't notice you had a Philly accent until you said "off."
By the way, my boyfriend is also from Philly, and when we talk on the phone there's a couple of times where I can't stand him due to his accent. There were even a couple of times I couldn't understand him in real life.
Depends on the part of Philly. I grew up in South Philly and then lived in Jersey for a few years. XD My dad was also from South Philly (actually all my ancestors on that side were, back to when they first came over from Italy) but his accent was much strong than mine. I've tried in the past to smooth out my accent a bit for professional reasons which is when I became interested in accents. Apparently the Philly one is very hard to completely rid oneself of!

I have a Philly accent (though I'm from Bucks county my grandparents were originally from philly) and I CANNOt that last list of words you did so fast. A lot seemed to rhyme for you but for me just about every other one doesn't rhyme with the next. I get "hopelessly tangled."
i lived in south jersey until i was 13 then southeast pa until i was 18 (both in the philly area) and now i live in south carolina and go to college here. people can tell that i'm a 'damn yankee' but cant single out exactly what area from my speech. my accent's not as bad as when i was little, i remember in elementary school my parents actually sent me to speech therapy.
it is nice to hear my home accent. I am originally from Philly but am living in Oklahoma until I head back for school in August But thanks I guess for the video....Yeah, I never realized that I had an accent or that there was even a Philly accent until I moved down here and people would accuse me of speaking with an accent and then I got used to the Oklahoma accent and now I realize it every time I talk to my friends...
No wonder you get the accent thing in RICHMOND! I grew up in South Jersey and moved to Northern VA when I was 16, and they called me "jersey girl" (the movie had yet to come out). People ask me where I am from and don't seem to pin it to N.J. I just thought I talked funny? I have lived here 12 years now, and I guess you can stop saying "liberry," but you can't change your vowels. You sound normal to me at least! Good luck in VA! I've learned to really appreciate it myself.
Thank you for posting this. I'm a wannabe-writer in Wisconsin, and one of my characters is a 24-year-old who moved from Jersey to Wisconsin to Philadelphia. Lots of accent-age there. I know some about the Philly accent, because I have friends in the Chester area, but your video and link are still a good resource. Thanks again!
That's interesting because i'm also a wannabe-writer and decided to make a video after researching Irish accents via YouTube for a story that i'm writing myself. ;D I know there aren't many good examples of Philly speak online so I figure my accent might be interesting to someone, somewhere. Glad to hear it was!
I love it. I grew up in philly and moved away two years ago and listening to this made me realize i'm losing mine and this makes me sad. I still say "wooder" and "beggle" and things like that but I know longer say "bacause" and "voice" like you do anymore. :(
hello. i lived in philly for 35 years then moved to missouri. everyone said "you sound funny" or "you sound like philly". i never knew philly had an accient until i left and it's funny to hear my mom say "coffee" or "on". so funny. i think you sound GREAT...i miss philly.
Did ya say you're Philadelphian? Hmm, I seem to understand ya fine. Perhaps because I'm British or ya been living elsewhere for a while. Ah well, thanks for the "lesson". :-)

it is nice to hear my home accent.
Do you ever get told to slow down?
Anyway... the vid is good

I'm from Richmond, VA.

That's where I live! Well, in Henrico County :P But it's still considered Richmond, I guess. I'm very confused by that, lol, but there you go.

Did ya say you're Philadelphian? Hmm, I seem to understand ya fine. Perhaps because I'm British or ya been living elsewhere for a while. Ah well, thanks for the "lesson". :-)

Lived in Philadelphia until I was 14, then 15 minutes away in South Jersey until about five months ago! I'm glad you can understand me fine. :)
