Just wanted to let everyone know that when I had the chance to hang with him for a little while he actually told me that they had given this piece to him 3 months before the premier and that besides the fact that it is a monster piece he had other things going on too. Cheers
This piece was composed in 1933 (just the 2nd guitar piece by Rodrigo). It was written upon request from Regino Sainz de la Maza (for whom the Aranjuez was dedicated). The piece was never performed or published until 2005, when it was discovered among Sainz de la Maza's archives. In 2006, it was given to Marcin Dylla to premiere at the Rodrigo Competition. In 1943 Rodrigo published a rearranged version of this piece in the form of the Prelude to the violin concerto Concierto de Estio.
I know he is a great player but this performance is a bit rough for his standard. I imagine he was ask to play this piece and he wasn't 100% enthusiastic about it.
Great job though, personally I think it's a great project too.
Moim zdaniem Dylla to jeden z najciekawszych gitarzystów naszych czasów. Operuje on przede wszystkim przepięknym dźwiękiem, frazuje z niespotykanym wyczuciem. Bardzo lubie sluchać jego gry.
Well i know that you have heared this too much times, but congratulations, well you make the premier of this grat pieze of Rodrigo, well i only have to say congratulations!!
It's always hard to give a premiere of a difficult work. I hope Marcin Dylla keeps it in his repertoire and matures with it and that other guitarists will also perform it...
->Probably still more can be done with the material, regarding the interpretation.
(I wonder how long Marcin had the score, prior to this performance)
I heard just the story about this piece, I don´t know is that atrue or what but Joaquin´s daughter found this piece in Joaquin´s papers and it was a unreleased piece. She gave that piece to Marcin to make a premiere of this piece at Rodrigo competition in Spain in 2005 I think.
@gitalista It was not Joaquin's daughter but a researcher working with her. Leopoldo Neri. She told us the story herself last year during Rafael Aguirre's winning performance of the piece at the Koblenz Guitar Festival.
I posted Aguirre's performance in Moscow as a video response, not to create debate but to portray the interpretation of this piece by a spanish guitarist. It would be good if other people could see it as well. I would appreciate it not being taken off this time.
I have just found that this piece was written before "Concierto de Estío" so it seems that Rodrigo based his violin concerto on this piece insted of this piece based on the violin concerto. I don't know if there is another work made by Rodrigo for piano or any other instrument that was written before using this themes so for me it seems that is a very original piece made for the guitar.
Another great piece made by Rodrigo. This piece is a very good arrangement made by Rodrigo of his own violin Concerto "Concierto de Estío". It is definitely a very difficult piece due to the difficulty on maintaining all the voices and speed. Mostly in the high register where you have the melody in the first string and the bass singing another melody that supports the harmony of the piece. It is a very difficult piece but worth to play it.
that was pretty intense and awesome. . .

I think Music of Memory by Nicholas Maw is similar, both of them are really difficult
Artistwolf1993 2 years ago
fair point. however music of memory is a lot less melodic than this toccata or the aforementioned sonata.
