  • you mentioned that you can get an all steel barrel for this rifle. can you point me in the right direction as to where i can purchase one?

  • how much was it

  • oh? the .22 lr isnt a good devensive round? well, i supose your right, other bullets will go strait thru a person, while a .22 ends up bouncing around, and we dont want that, do we? ~sarcasm~

  • Jam-o-matic. I have a steel barrell and still cant plink with it...many different ammo...its suggested to use high velocity ammo. funny enough cci blazer bulk ammo works the best. Ill take my ruger 10/22 over this withought a second thought about weight and compactness. I can fire 1000 rounds straight with very little compromise in accuracy withought cleaning.

  • @MrKillbot5 Your jam-o-matic is probably one of the older versions. The one in the video and the one that I have are the new versions. Henry retooled and redesigned the rifle and took care of the problems that the gun was having with failure to feed and failure to eject...plus, you can now use cheaper bulk ammo. My bulk federal fed and ejected just fine with no ftf's or fte's. You can also put three magazines in the stock instead of two...one in the rifle and two in the slots.

  • any idea where to get bigger than 8 round mags?

  • (continued) get stranded today, this gun is just simply designed to handle the elements with minimum cleaning and care, it is designed to make getting your dinner a little less energy consuming and still be small enough that you can actually take a firearm with you, .22's are great for small game, shoot a squirell with a .308 whats left of it? nothing, shoot a squirell with a .22 what do you have? a damn good dinner! so theres my two cents

  • (continued) suppose your in a real survival situation you accidently press the mag release it drops out now you cant find it....your screwed, and as for it being a .22lr, this caliber is small but very versitile, it can kill deer, and as far as wanting something bigger, throw a hand gun in for the purposes of something bigger, but survival situations arent planned, so its not like you can get up and say oh hey im gonna go pack my bug out bag and get stranded, (to be continued)

  • the one thing i see people complain about is this gun be somewhat inaccurate or things like the clips dont just drop out, and the fact that its a .22lr, to explain this, it is in all intents and purposes designed as a survival rifle, im amazed as to how accurate it is for what it is, semi's are usually less accurate the a bolt, secondly the barrel is not permanantly attached so you can a couple thoundths movent the clips dont just drop out cuz if it did suppose you (to be continued)

  • Got out and shot 100 rounds of bulk ammo through it with no hiccups at all. Was shooting a bit low, so I raised the back sight up and it zeroed right in. At 15 yards, I was hitting in the bulls eye ring all day. So easy to put together and take down and very easy to clean. The trigger pull is a little heavy, but tollerable. Very light and just plain fun. I'm a left hander and it's like it was made for me! I'd say Henry certainly worked out the bugs in this little rifle. Good to go!

  • is this legal in cali?

  • @zastek23 Yes, Cali legal

  • awesome gun i think im gonna get one, sad to see it cant be used as a heavy plinker but i suppose thats what i have the savage mark II f for great .22 as well btw, i understand why they milled the scope mount to a 3/8 but makes it hard to mount a scope to, i have a center point multi tac that im gonna get quick release mounts for and my gf every time you said butt she laughed her ass as if it was the first time shes ever heard anyone say it

  • Nice review! I love the design but I'm looking for something bigger than a .22 in case i run into a bear or something on the long hike I am planning. I need it to be lightweight and break down like this so it will fit in my backpack on the bus, and then I can put it together when I get on the trail. Any ideas? :)

  • I love the AR-7 "I have one" I carried it in my trunk of my car for at least 10 years. But as you say it is a bit minimal for Protection. Excellent video

  • By the way Fred, how is the trigger pull? I have heard everything from smooth, around three pounds, to long, hard, gritty, and around 20 pounds! What would you say about yours? Thank you.

  • Fred, I've gotta say that after watching numerous videos and researching this rifle, yours is by far the best video I've seen, all but the actual shooting. I have recently ordered one of these through Davidsons (Gallery of Guns) and I feel that I already know it because of your excellent instructions. I'm a left handed shooter, but I was told that even though the butt is off set to the right, it is no problem shooting it left handed. I have a Henry .22 lever action and love it! Thank you!

  • Is that aluminum?

  • Is that aluminum?

  • @fredhart I really like your videos, espacially this one

  • @fredhart I really like your videos, especially this one

  • can i use p+ rounds on it?

  • @VirginiaOpsAirsoft Nope, sorry.

  • does it come in left handed?

  • @MrDubblejinx Nope, sorry.

  • Comment removed

  • @MrDubblejinx It works great for left handers. As a matter of fact, the way the barrel is canted to the right, I believe it's easier for a left hander to aim and shoot. The barrel is off set so that it can fit nicely into the stock. The way the rounds eject, there is no danger of any hitting you in the face or going down your shirt coller. I love it!

  • Thank you for giving a such a neat review on such a cool rifle. I've got a lever action .22 from Henry myself, and this video along with my prior purchase may just prompt me to purchase one of these AR-7's!

  • Mmmm, AR-7. We meet again Mr Bond, after Istanbul.

  • @vonUtz that is litteraly why i looked up this gun.

  • Awesome vid, I did an AR-7 review as well with footage of a ten year old girl shooting it. Goes to show how user friendly this little gun is. Keep up the good work.

  • Very nicely done and thanks. I just purchased one after wanting one for years

  • omg!! the best review ive ever seen in you tube!!!! a balance of principles and personality!!! WAY TO GO SIR!!!!

  • Way sweet !! That is one cool .22 I think that I might have to pick one up! Great vid thanks for your time !

  • I love that it was designed by a Stoner.

  • Extra Magazines are $10.00 ea. aftermarket on Amazon.

  • Ok, so the whole time I was like, this guy is gonna have some stupid obvious answer to the trivia question, but that was awesome. (for the whole vid I was like "isn't that the gun from bonds suitcase?" loved it.

  • HA Stoner

  • Looks like a great little rifle. I've been looking for a light weight rifle for backpacking/camping. I already own a KelTec SUB-2000 which has been great. I was considering the Marlin 70SS. Now I'm really leaning towards this AR-7 rifle, love the interesting history lesson. Thanks for putting this video together.

  • I had one about 10 years ago, made by Armalite, that thing was real picky one ammo. I am looking at getting one of these for my GOOD bag, but I am worried it will be picky on ammo as well. Have you noticed it not like certain brands or loadings of .22lr? Thanks for the video.

  • @docwilkey,I live in New Jersey

  • Its amazing! Nice video. I wish I cud be a proud owner of this gem. Are there any restrictions or rules/regulations for buying it..if you are in USA on a vacation/leisure trip?

  • is the henrey version better than the charter arms version of this gun?

  • You know, I have put tons of rounds through mine. The steel lined plastic barrel hasn't given me any problems.

  • Beautiful!!! Any ideas on what the laws are regarding this weapon in California i.e. whether or not it can be kept in your trunk? How long the cooling period is, if any? This would be my first firearm. Wanted to add it to my wholly shit kit kept in the trunk of my vehicle. Thanks.

  • thanks for the info!

  • its called a stock

  • I had owned one of these about 15 years ago,I loved it but, where I live it is not considered a rifle,I had to get a handgun permit for it.So because of this I could not take it with me hiking as I would need a concealed carry permit for this purpose. So I sold it as it was useless to me :(

  • @shack456 what state or city do you live in? If they have those laws I think I would like to avoid moving there.

  • One thing about this rifle is it's how finicky it is regarding ammunition. Don't use any round over 36 grn. in weight. I'm unsure about the 37 grn. Winchester HVs, but 38 and heavier grn. bullets are too long and blunt, and when they ramp into the chamber, small pieces of lead shave off from the bottom of the projectiles. 36 and lighter projectiles are a bit shorter and more tapered, chamber easily, and don't get scraped when you chamber them.

  • You said tight butt ass-embly.. heh heh heh. Great video. Im getting one next month and this video is the most in depth so far. Any problems with it?

  • @redheadhistorian As he mentioned the barrel is plastic with a steel insert so if you want a regular plinking rifle you should get something else or an after market barrel.

  • Over the years I was thinking someone should make a field strip video for the AR-7. I made one with a web cam but the video quality was total crap and my mic didn't work so I didn't know till it was all finished recording. Glad to see there is a good video out there though. The AR-7 is surprisingly simple compared to other automatics I've field stripped, but if you don't know what to do it can still be confusing.

  • lol "The butt is tight" :p

  • Problem with the rail on top it is too narrow for most mounts such as mounts you would use for a AR 15 rail.

  • haha looks like the varmint rifle on fallout new vegas hahha

  • this gun was a jamomatic for me...

  • europeyan fucking firearm laws! i need some .22lr firepower in my b3 air rifle.

  • it would be nice to see a complete disassembly of the reciever. I wish you would consider doing a video on that.

  • I remember that one, but I thought it was an ar5 "she should of kept her mouth shut"

  • It would be good to put it in a backpack for hiking or walking to blind

But please recomment and tell me what it's like with the sort of hollow stock(in the video I could hear it) so I just wanted to know

  • I never knew it was that simple to remove the bolt! That fact makes for a complete cleaning effort on the Henry AR7. I have no interest in opening the receiver for cleaning; too complicated and too much work and not necessary unless you've dropped it in the mud. I just blast the inside of the receiver with CLP and it cleans nicely. Love the AR7 because I understand its purposes and limitations. And since I only use CCI high/hyper velocity ammo with it, it NEVER jams...

  • the ar7 was in the james bond film goldfinger lol

  • @saxs72 no, I think that was the ar5, I just saw that movie , and it brought me to this

  • Oh just a little FYI the "spring retainer thingy" is actually called the guide rod and buffer assembly. And the part on the magazine that is outwards is called the follower. Sorry, I'm a stickler for proper terminology when it comes to guns. No offense. :-)

  • Great video. Thanks for the info. Very well explained and easy to understand even for a dummy like me lol. This rifle has officially been added to my survival wish list. Dear Santa...

  • Ive got one, its silver bought it years ago, id like to paint it, what kind of paint should I use. what do I prep it with??

  • would any of you owners recomend this gun for shooting small game? EX. squirl, prairie dog, rabbit? if so explain,

    Also what kind of scope?

  • Awesome well done, complete review. I am a fan! Sub'd obviously.

  • well done. i enjoyed your vid alot.

  • Can this be used as a recreational gun? Or just survival means only?

  • nice review, u should do one on the 22 lever gun

  • FRED,.........Your the Man! Great Review...Nice Job!

  • I got one from Bud's about a month ago and just love it. The funnest gun to shoot that I own. Only problem is the trigger is just so STIFF. Can't seem to get better than 3" groups at 35 yds with the peep sights. Hopefully, the trigger will loosen up in time. One thing about the video, you don't have to dry fire it to de-cock. Hold the bolt about 3/4 way back and pull the trigger. Then ease the bolt forward. Should work on most semi-autos. I know it does on the Henry.

  • i love that gun! i want 1 :)

  • I like my AR 7 fun plinking. I wouldn't go as far as saying it a survival rifle. A good air gun could do the same work as the AR7. No one tool can do it all. I say get a rifle(Rem 700, AR15/10) chambered in .308 (first choice) or .223 (2nd choice), and an air rifle.

  • where u get this gun? i been wanting it for a while now thx

  • @stupid2574 any local gun store should have it if not they can order it for you. depending on what state your in

  • my first video of yours i have ever watched do you own any 30/6s i have a pump and a bolt action but one is my dads (fourteen so i still live at home)

  • fred, i couldn't help but notice that the receiver seems off-center from the stock, and it leans towards the right. is this an annoyance while shooting the rifle? please respond, as i am very interested in buying an AR-7

  • The reason i ask for a full strip is because in mine i have a case ejector that sits just under the magazine release lever in the receiver. This thin piece of metal means that for cleaning the bolt for a field strip is not possible as the ejector blocks the path of the bolt. I can send photos. i think i might make a video at some point for a full strip and tips for putting back together. Happy shooting Fred

  • Hi Chap. Nice video, thanks. I would be very interestd to see a full strip of the receiver/action. I've had mine for a few years now and have put hundreds of rounds through it using CCI minimags. Nothing else seems to work. Also, i found that cleaning the working parts (bolts, breach and bolt housing) almost elliminated any jams i got that were not down to low powered ammo.

  • No doubt that Henry Improved it greatly.

Henry is a great classic American arms company that stands true.

Tak a hint Colt, get off your high horse and make guns for the working man again.

  • did you get this off of a website? and if so, what website?

  • Very informational! I learned a few new things and I've been researching this gun for years, Thanks!

  • Do you have to lower the peep sight everytime you stow it in the stock?

  • I hear it doesn't eject worth a hoot.

  • where can you buy an after market barrel? since i will more than likely use it frequently

  • @scooter1392 at AR-7.com

  • I want one of these so bad. Not that i think that i would need a survival gun, but its just so damn cool

  • HI GREAT 22LR I FALLEN IN LOVE WITH IT. IS IT STILL AVAILABLE? ANY WEB SITE PLEASE

  • @SAQQUSAWRU got mine at Basspro today for $220

  • great video man! cant wait to pick one of these up!

  • Can this gun kill a human from a far distance?

  • Great video! I've been researching this gun for a buy and you answered all my questions. Trivia was a nice bonus. Thanks and good job!!!

  • great video, best review i found for this gun

  • Top quality review, you just earned yourself a subscriber :}

  • i have no clue what plinking is

  • The bare receiver is 100% safe to dry fire because the firing pin cannot impinge upon the face the barrel (which is not attached) and that's where dry fire damage comes from for rimfire firearms. =)

  • Thanks Fred, great vid. With the front sight, doesn't it mean that you have to zero it every time because putting the barrel in the stock will reset it?

Can't believe I got the trivia question :D

  • Looks like a neat little rifle but that front sight worries me. Gonna post a video of some range time with it also?

PS Like the history behind the rifle part, Alot of people seem to forget that part. Thank you

  • So help me god, Fred... if I spend any of my long range build budget on this, I will blame you 100%...

  • hey, fred, do M6.

  • @DudeNumberOnePlus Sorry, I don't have an M6

  • @fredhart how about an M4 Aircrew Survival Rifle, it is fantastic, replicas are available.

  • hey, fred, get an m6...... lol

  • It also fits real nicely in a motorcycle saddle bag :-)

  • @fugstik Great point!

  • Great Review. Added this to my ever-growing wish list.

  • @FogCityTactical Thank you very much my friend.

  • You sort of look and sound like Stanton Friedman :D

  • @treasuredroperX Really, maybe I should do a couple of UFO videos :)

  • @fredhart Haha yeah. I do some of those.

  • I dig the AR-7. Thanks for the video, Fred.

  • Springfield*

  • Springfeild Armory used to have a survival rifle, I believe it was called the "Survival Scout" it was chambered in .45 Long Colt & also accepted .410 shells. The only thing I disliked, was that it had a "Mitten Trigger" (for lack of the proper term). I guess it would be ideal in a survival situation in a cold climate, though. I'm not sure if they still produce it.

  • CCCCCCoooooLLLL Thanks

  • Great review Fred

  • I've shot one of these, it was "ok". For the same purpose, I'd prefer a Marlin Papoose, especially if it wasput in an aftermarket folding stock. Each to their own though.

  • Good video on a classic pack-gun...Nice history and background lesson too. Well done Fred.

  • Great review.

  • AR7, had one, hated it so much, the sights were horrible

  • Good stuff. Great review. Whats the price tag on that lil guy? It would compliment my Mossberg JIC. 12 Gage nicely.

  • ★★★★★

Awesome video Fred. You always picked the coolest stuff to review!

  • @TheMultiGunMan Thank you again for the very cool old school 5 stars!!!

  • Thank you Fred! Great answer to a backpack survival rifle.

  • great review except your voice sounded to forced, it sounded too much like a documentary.

  • @pollywannapenny You are correct, I had to script this video so I could deliver my points while keeping the video within 15 mins, I don't normally do this.

  • awesome review Fred. I would say it's the best review yet. Keep up the great work.

  • nice man you gotta make the best videos on youtube, im going to get one of these soon

  • @ZombieKillerOfCanada Thank you so much for the very kind comment!!!

  • That's a sweet little rifle. Wouldn't mind having one myself.

  • great video Fred, I have got to one, been wanting to for over a year now.

  • my friend thought you were Gay because of your voice! and i got mad at him

  • @WesternBushcraft I can't do anything about the way my voice sounds but he can do something about the way he treats others. I appreciate you letting him know. Thanks for stopping by and supporting my channel my friend.

  • Why don't I have this yet? Not asking you fred... just talkin' to myself. Sweet, sweet lightweight survival piece. It's on my short list. This would be a great rifle to cache somewhere... just bag and bury. I don't think .22 is too small for defense. Anyone who thinks it won't stop someone ask them to let you shoot them in the head with it... don't really do it though but you can guess what their answer would be.

  • @cyclist01222 Great comment, I hope to do a shooting video with this rifle this weekend.

  • Nice video, Fred. Not sure if a plain old .22 Ruger or Browning pistol could fill in the role just as well without all the assembly in the field. It does fit the role as a discreet secret agent tool more than that of survival IMHO.

  • I say you test it to see if the stock is water proof.

  • @INTOGUNS1 Not going to happen :) There is a good video on youtube already, it will keep water out unless you try to hold it underwater.

  • What's the normal price for a new one? The one I saw down the road at academy is 300 bucks.

  • @bolodeb 209 to 300 dollars.

  • Great video Fred. I purchased one of these about a 2 months ago. Took it to the farm and shot about 50 rounds of different ammo. I only had one failure to feed when my son was shooting it. Further inspection relieved that the magazine was not fully seated and walked out. Not the guns fault. You will enjoy this rifle as my son and I did. I will link a video response of my son shooting it. Keep up the good videos.

  • @mdpenney Awesome comment, I will gladly accept the video my friend.

  • Too bad you haven't shot it yet. Thats the part I'd like to know about... how it actually shoots :)

  • Cool, I like the orange inside the stock on these new ones

The trivia was a great addition to a review

  • I have one of these except mine was made by Charter Arms. It has to be the biggest piece of junk I have ever owned. It jams on almost every round unless you use CCI Stingers or Minimags or occasionally Winchester SuperX ammo in it. It was given as a gift by my dad a little over 20 years ago. I think he paid $67 for it brand new then. On the other hand, I have heard good things about the Henry version. Good video.

  • I think I would put a metallic front sight on it.

  • Pretty cool! I have always wanted one of these.

  • :) Awesome vid Fred. Did someone say anyhthing about Bud's being good or bad? I just ordered a Taurus .22 PLY and waiting. It's my first tiem buying from them.

  • @lhusby I've only bought some small items from Buds, they seemed ok.

  • that is one AWESOME rifle Fred, great video.

  • Great video. Nice gun

  • Firstly Armalite made the rifle first for the USAF as a survival rifle ( designated AR-7 or automatic rifle 7) in 1956 ..it evolved from bolt action to over and under to semi-auto.. Charter Arms took over production from 1973 -1990 ( I have one of those and the ONLY problem I experienced was a feeding prob due to an after market 25 round mag). Survival Arms came into the picture from 90 - 97 and finally Henry from 97 to the present. Great video Fred! Your style is fantastic. Keep it up dude

  • @mrmezmureyz I used Wikipedia and some forums as my source for the history which is not that black and white. Some air crew from that time period swear they had the AR-7 even though the Air Force as a whole never bought them and only 12 test models of the AR-5. I left out the Charter Arms part because I did not want to inject too much negativity due to their sub par manufacturing.

  • IF YOU KEPT IN A HOT CAR DAY IN DAY OUT WOULD THE HEAT WARP THE PLASTIC YA THINK?

  • @DIXIECONFEDERATEDAWG Great question!!! ABS plastic can be used between −25 and 60 °C (-13 and 140 °F)

  • @DIXIECONFEDERATEDAWG Check out Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene on Wikipedia

  • Great vid. Fred I think you just sold me..

  • eugene stoner? awesome

  • @psychoclown420 He is one of the great gun designers standing with John Browning and Mikhail Kalashnikov

  • @fredhart all geniuses in their own

  • Nice video and great information as usual, thanks for sharing. Actually have purchased a couple of items you have presented and been very satisfied. This may be one of them in the future. Take care and have a great day.

  • Great review, ever since I saw James take down a helicopter with this little beauty I've wanted one.

  • 22 can do damage it could kill moose if you hit right. its been done

  • @ChromeGhost0219 You are very correct!!!

  • @fredhart infact Im trying to remember the book, I think its called into the wild. about the boy that travled a lot and died in Alaska. but hyeah he killed a moose with a .22

  • Great review! i wouldn't mind having one of those.. whats the cheapest you have found one for sale? any links? THANKS!

  • @markstevenbuisness Impact Guns has it for 223 with free shipping, Buds Gun Shop has it for 204 with free shipping!!!

  • @fredhart Hmm, ive heard some bad things about buds gun shop... You?
