  • A good tribute to the band line up that put them on the map

  • I love hearing the old songs played live, with Phil singing and Chester and Daryl on stage. Those 2 guys are incredible musicians. Daryl plays Steve Hackett's solos majorly awesome, and Chester is a better drummer than Phil (different style though, so it is a tough call) but they play very well together. I really like Chester's drums on this one.

  • @zierkly I remember hearing this on the boot "You'll Love Us Live" - I always loved this version and I agree with zierkly's comments. Chester and Daryl are special musicians.

  • 40 years later and still just as powerful!!!

  • Genesis Six Hours Live 1972-1980 2DVD set available at Tommygun Video, please see our channel for link to site, video clips, more info

  • Are you all blind and deaf.? The song is played to Fast, killing whatever emotion was left by watching Phil Collins jumping with the towel around the neck. No EDGE, no atmosphere, no Genesis.

  • @Alex23Gallo no..you are only fucking troll...please get out of here and listen justin bieber or celtic music (this a least gots atmosphere i think) ...THE BEST VERSION I'VE HEARD ...

  • phil and peter have pretty similar voices if you ask me

  • Sounds rushed and the keyboards sound a little different.

  • i don't know alot of genesis, i'm 16 and got lamb lies down on vinyl randomly to get into prog and found this band. i love peter gabriel but seriously phil collins doesn't sound too far off the mark and this song is really, really fucking good.

  • I love the lyrics to this one. Sums up every dictator ever. Love the line -- "freedom that I will provide" -- emphasis on "I"

    Never, EVER trust "charismatic leaders."

  • @PittFan888 Reminds me of a TV show called "Blake's 7" - the main character, Blake, is very much like that - the show and the character remind me of this song :) I suggest you take a look at it.

  • phill must be sings gabriel´s songs again for remember that time..

  • Am I the only one who gets an adrenaline rush while hearing this song? :)

  • @SPeacock Me too. This song is like a hit of speed!

  • Am I the only one who getsan adrenaline rush while hearing this song? :)

  • collins is such an amazing singer!

  • Phil really does a great job, especially at the ending where the reverb is turned way up.

Though a major complaint here, is that the guitar parts are, to be honest, horrible. Through most of the song, it's basicly just this,, Soulless layer of distortion..

Chester Thompson did a great job with the drums, the bass parts were to low in volume, Banks needed more power in the first two minutes on the keyboard.

  • clearly this video is filmed from one camera as part of many, and hence why it tends to lean towards the keyboards, it's clearly surviving footage somebody smuggled out of the BBC to freedom, but was probably meant to be edited down with footage from the other cameras..

  • @silentbobpc Somebody should find the person responsible for rescuing this footage and thank them :) On behalf of the fans.

  • Looks like they hired a monkey to work the camera. :)

  • @SPeacock lmao.. most likely

  • Phil does the song justice. Isn't that what it's about? All of us are going to die the price of the freedom that music provides! LOL! Love all those guys!! PEACE!

  • Bang, Bang, Clash, Clash, YUHHHH!!!! Put your shirt back on will you, that is not a very attractive look!!!!!

  • Great old Genesis Masterpiece!!

  • It's a pity that Tony Banks' organ sound is too mellow. This song needs the rough edges.

  • the cameraman director was a fucking cunt!!!!!!!

maybe he liked tony bank's cok

  • is this 1978 / 90?

  • @skintrade 1980 judging from the beard

  • @skintrade 7 May 1980 - Lyceum Ballrooms, London, England, UK :)

  • The cameraman seems to have a fixation on TB....

  • @Mystep Maybe he's curious as to what notes TB plays :)

  • @SPeacock.I believe keyboards were becoming more fashionable in those days and that the cameraman was responding to that fact. In a way SH was a much more innovative musician than TB and it's a shame he didn't get the attention he deserved back then

  • it was really good!!!!!! obviously thumbs up.......and the complaints about peter and phil i will leave them for the embittered ones, cuz i saw both versions and i loved both of them....... ;-)

  • Wow, once again I'm struck by the simliarity of the voices, for I thought this was Gabriel's.

  • Worst Genesis cover band ever heard.

Please someone shuts up the mouth of Mr. Phil Collins!

  • Great! But Chester never captured the fire in the drumming for this song, and plays a different groove, more funky rather than the fast and furious double bass drum stabs that Phil did.

  • Got this on DVD - absolutely brilliant!

  • génialement grand !

  • Man!!! This is G R E A T!!!! I HAD NEVER SEEN / HEARD PHILL COLLINS SINGING THE KNIFE!!! I love this stuff!!!!!!!! I subscrrrrrribe NOW!!!! t h a n k s....

  • How to destroy

    A Fantastic piece

Of music . Its ok but its just not the power , emotion , nothing !

    Go see ( Musical Box)

  • @Alex23Gallo musical box is a crappy cover band ---we no need a shittng pretenders a playing out wonderfull songs

  • @gatolocoverga152

if you say so you CAN´T be a true fan of the old genesis.

of course there is nothing like the original.

but if you can at all accept something liek the ATTEMPT to come close to it, there simply any better.

genesis themselves admitted that they are better than they were - because the malfuntcions of the visuals back then are gone today.

i saw them about ten times and never regretted one single cent i spent on them.

try them out, do yourself a favour.

  • The Duke Tour and the Three Sides has the Best Setlist

Duke Tour : The Knive, Lady lies, Dukes Travels, One for the Vine...

Three Sides Live : The Lamb lies down/watcher of the skies, Suppers Ready, Who Dunnit

    Best ever, epc :)

  • @chinwildchicken The only other setlist that I can think of which tops the Duke/3 Sides Live setlists is the 2007 Turn It On Again reunion setlist. :)

  • @SPeacock Yes a brilliant Cage Medley and Ripples, Dukes Intro... But Hold on my Heart could be better replaced with Your own Special way or Many too many ;-)

  • @chinwildchicken Funny you should say that - Many Too Many was considered for the 2007 tour, but it wasn't played or rehearsed.

  • @SPeacock Yes I Heard that too. Also Blood on the Rooftops could have been played... But although Its Very Good... I will upload some Rehearsels now on my Channel ;D

  • @chinwildchicken I look forward to them :)

  • @SPeacock

NO WAY! The 2007 setlist is the worst setlist ever! 2007 was just a bunch of edited songs done in slow motion. Edited Ripples, Edited Mama as usual, Edited Firth of Fifth as usual, Edited Behind the Lines, Edited Tonight, Tonight, Tonight / Edited Dukes Travels, Edited Cinema Show as usual. Even the end of Afterglow was weak. They come back in 2007 after 16 years and play alot of nonsense, and cut out the best part of Ripples. The Duke's Travels was a spit in the face tease!

  • @yesshows100 We agree to disagree :) I think the worst setlist is the 1992 setlist (it was OK to begin with but they messed about with it too much), and the 1998 setlist from the Calling All Stations tour was marginally better.

  • @yesshows100 I'm saying that the 2007 setlist had the ideal balance of prog and pop, that's all. Nothing more, nothing less.

  • Plil is Annoying here.

  • Finally they're inducted into the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame. FUSE Channel on March 15th 2010 LIVE from the Waldorf Astoria in NYC- DON'T MISS IT -- GENESIS LIVES FOREVER !!

  • Peter Gabriel is a pretentious fuckhead. Though I like his solo stuff, he called his Genesis days as "school days". After the 1982 Milton Keynes reunion, he has not played any Genesis material. Phil Collins did a great job on this tune. Chester Thompson played the drums better than John Mayhew and even better than Phil's performance on Genesis Live. Daryl's solo is excellent, I know isn't Steve nor Anthony Phillips but a great player in his own right.

  • this KNIFE changes the word power by peace ...!

  • nice song i love it i know it like

  • Lol, Phil's moves in the beginning remind me of Status Quo

  • What? Stuermer's nothing solo didn't help ruin it?

  • oh! yeah! Let's go phil ,

  • the best genesis song ever recorded is supper's ready i do not care what genesis era you are from we all can admit that supper's ready is probly there greatest song

  • Agreed.

  • I only wish they would have played this song on the Turn it on Again tour!

  • well I liked it, the audience liked it...while you're still crying about PG's absence.

  • the eternal and without sense "petermania" we all love GENESIS... I like The Knife and Phil sing it so well...

  • @WintersWar

I'm not "still crying about PG's absence" because Peter isn't absent to me ;)))

and Phil is so ridicolous quacking this song ;-))))

  • I think your right

  • You people that bash Phil are fucking insane and can't listen you fucking fuck, I saw Genesis with both Phil and Pete, Pete himself said Phil has a smoother voice, and he is the only one that can do justice to this material you fucking earless fucking idiot

  • Me a fucking Idiot??. Take a look at yourself, loser. lol. The insults....pathetic!!. Here is an advise to your sorry ass condition: Disconnect the Internet, get out of your mom's basement and get yourself a girlfriend...(in your case, it would be Ok if you have to pay for a whore)

  • While I fucking agree with you fucking adding fucking every other fucking word merely makes one appear fucking stupid.

  • Phil is doing his best to keep the memory of the earlier material alive for pretentious asshole "fans" like you, after Peter ABANDONED the group (which was over 30 years ago at this point, by the way).

  • Really? Saying "he can't help but feeling ashamed of some of the band's ealier material", is keeping its "legacy alive"?. Going 360 degrees in the opposite direction of what this band used to do, is "doing his best".,...? You don't know what are you talking about. ...And "I'M AN ASSHOLE FAN" because I don't share the opinion of the "Perfect fan" (I suspect you include yourself in that category)? LOL....STFU!!! And more important, get yourself a life out of Youtube, you coward!!!

  • You got it, sport

  • Vive is right.......And you just got owned, sport. LOL

  • Vive is right?? I got owned?? I'm hear because I'm a fan of Genesis of all eras. If people don't like version of the song or Collins - go away. Select something else. How am I getting "pwned" or "owned" (whatever that means).

  • Yes, I believe vive is right.....Now, am I also an assohole? Hell no. But you are...

  • That's cool. It's about Genesis anyway.

  • Quite inferior to the original, but still a good rendition. Really what kills it is the lack of Peter's flute, but I guess they could have played the whole thing and substituted the flute for a synth solo. And where' the epic guitar solo? But no matter what, I'll always listen/watch if "The Knife" is being played; it's one of my favorite Genesis songs. I never knew they played the song with Phil singing.

  • Peter's flute was FAIL.

    Period.

  • is the camera man in love with Tony? :P

    btw.. cool stuff!

  • Sound great!

But tell me, is this cameraman an unfortunate victim of brain damage, or was he born retarded?

  • omg hahahahahahahah

  • It does sound a little like a cover band

  • This looks like the Duke tour. I can tell by Mike's haircut (which looks similarly like Anthony Phillips) :)

  • It is - Lyceum Ballrooms, May 1980.

  • Also by Tony's gear. He's using the Arp Quadra and the Hammond organ. Think this was the only tour he used both these instruments together.

  • amazing!! no better than Gabriel, but really good!

  • His voice does not crack like young Gabriel and there is no poncy flute.

  • Gabriel's flute playing was never poncy. While not quite as inpressive as Ian Anderson's playing, Gabriel was a master of having a light touch with it. It added so much to the sound.

  • Sorry, it was poncier than a drag-queen convention on Fire Island.

  • Brilliant. I have never heard Phill sing this song before. Thank you so much for this posting. This was THE tour. New lineup old songs. Perfect.

  • 7th may 1980 at the lyceum ballrooms, london

  • This song is cool!

  • Let me see. This is about The French Revolution. Just like The Tale of Two Cities. It reminds me of Rael on the bus during Outside the Cage.

  • What makes this extra special is that Phil didn't even play drums on the original. Chester is playing John Mayhew's parts!! LOL

This is great. Would love to see/hear more.

  • And Stuermer is playing Ant Phillips guitar parts!

  • Cell...I almost forgot!!!

Man if they only threw this in on the later tours. This video shows that they obviously play this incredibly tight onstage.

  • It's like a cover band! =-P

I hate to say this, but while I think Phil improved on some Peter songs like In The Cage, I think that Peter does a better job on this one.

Otherwise, I love this version. There's so much energy.

  • Increible, Phill Collins interpretando este temazo de la era Gabriel, muy bien interpretado, pero le falta el carisma y la teatralidad de Gabriel en el escenario, igual buenisimo.

  • I believe this is from The Theatre Royal in London, May 4, 1980. I first heard it broadcast on the radio in 1978, then bought the bootleg a few years later. It's great to finally see the video footage of that very performance. Thanks for sharing this, LonelyManOnTheCorner!!

  • By "Big" meaning as POPular as they did with Phil "Pop" Collins? Absolutely. You Are right.

  • that's ****ing brilliant. Who needs PG???

  • I love statements like this. Without PG, there would have been NO Genesis!

  • that's not actually the point I was making :-)

  • sooo you're point was...?

  • it's as good as the version off 'live' - in fact better for me as it doesn't have the flute break and is more concise. Therefore 'Who needs PG'. Comment relates to this song not their complete canon...

  • I think that they did a pretty damn good job. But I was done with them after this (1980).

  • nice 1, i would of uploaded this but i couldnt be bothered lol, i like it quick and simple so i just upload the audio

  • Then you missed seeing Tony Bank's awesome Hammond work

  • Well Phil sings it better than Peter, but that is the great Genesis Fan Fight. I enjoy both, but I especially enjoy Genesis live. A band that can actually play instruments . . . how . . . progressive!

  • I love Phil Collins but he butchers the song. I miss Steve Hackett and Peter Gabriel!

  • Even Ant's original work is preferable to Stuermer in all but the chord work--where they all are about equal.
