  • So genes that make peope fat are getting more common? And only in certain countries? And in such a way as just happens to correlate with lifestyle? Hmmmmmm

  • what an annoying bunch of women. no men i see. (im a man) anyhow back to the weight thing. i find it interesting to watch these programs coz im trying to gain weight. i have to eat unhealthy food becasue it has high colories and i stil hardly gain a pound. its completely genetic, wot u eat matters but very slightly. ur weight is based on genetics and exercise. im always walking everywhere. in 40 years u'l hav skinny ppl trying to gain weight & fat ppl trying to lose it just the same.

  • Who conducted the study?

    How was it conducted?

How did they draw their conclusions?

What is the estimated % error of the study?

Has this study been peer reviewed?

Why are there no guy's on your show?

    ...

If you had a guy on your show, he might find answers to questions like these. Questions that men need answered before we consider the validity of a study. Maybe you could get one of your boyfriends to help... It will probably increase your male audience.

  • I found the study... You Lied!

"It's all U.S. adults COULD be overweight in 40 years"... not "all U.S. adults WILL be overweight in 40 years".

Because it's an indefinite conclusion without a statistical probability... it cancels it self out. That is to say the study reached NO conclusion, but instead used silly word games so they don't all get fired.

  • And I think Hitha Prabhakar is a dummy. What she's more or less saying is that people are too stupid to have figured out how to have become thin, since, who actually wants to BE fat?

I haven't looked at the study myself, but I imagine they're saying the very large majority of adults will be overweight. Not ALL. Considering it's already at 2/3, that's not too out there.

  • Hitha Prabhakar is right. She is not saying that people don't want to be thin, she is saying they aren't willing to make the effort.

You can buy fruit in cans pack it water (aka not heavy syrup). The reason people on food stamps are fat is because they are lazy and buy pre-made stuff instead of cooking.

  • Bullcrap, I say. The weight loss industry makes money hand-over-fist, and the fact is that even if people DO lose weight, nearly all of them gain it all back, many of hem with extra pounds. People ARE listening to all the experts and STILL they're fat.

I dare ANYONE to be so bold as to to think they can make fat people lose weight and keep it off by making food and exercise choices for their fat friends and try to get them to keep the weight off. I pretty much guarantee that you will fail.

  • If by fail you mean: go back eating the way that made them fat, then yes that's what happens most of the time.

People that go on a plan to lose weight and stick to it don't gain it back.

  • So that's, like, what: 2% of people? 5%? (and of that minuscule percentage, shall we also take the time to consider people with eating disorders?)

EVEN if that's true, and it's not, you're implying that people WANT to be fat, if they're not willing to make the effort to do otherwise.

Of the VERY few people who manage to lose weight and keep it off, who's to say that the genetics of the person aren't the main factor?

Barring a starvation diet, some people are always going to be fat.

  • It's not that people want to be fat, it's that they don't want to change the way they eat. I know a bunch of people that are trying to quit smoking, the reason they haven't quit isn't because they want lung cancer.

Other then the fact that most people don't realize how many calories they eat, the lack of weight loss comes down to a lack of will power. I'm guessing a lack of will power isn't what you mean by genetic factor.

  • And since I'm pretty sure I know where you are going to go with this. When I say fat, I mean actually fat (obese according to BMI), I'm not say women need to look like ones you see in fashion mags. With a few rare exception nobody needs to go on a starvation diet to not be obese.

  • You're way off. I think the BMI is one of the most atrociously ridiculous scales ever created. Having seen a bulimic/anorexic who looked like a human skeleton up close who was considered by the BMI scale to still be of healthy weight, I think it's a ludicrous standard for medicine to hold people to.

YES, people are are a greater risk for illness after a certain weight, but when you practically need to be prepubescent to or genetically gifted to fit into the "normal" range, this it's absurd.

  • Moreover, the smoking comparison is bogus -- you're comparing something that a person needs to do to live, eating, with consuming a highly addictive drug. It's apples and oranges.

The fact is that many fat people eat just as much as skinny people, but the fat people have lower metabolisms. To make matters worse, reducing your calorie intake (dieting) decreases your metabolism even FURTHER, as your body tries to conserve fat to survive the harsh time.

Most thin people are LUCKY, not diligent.

  • If you eat way less then you should, yes it will slow your metabolism. Eating a little less then you need (what you're suppose to do to lose weight) won't slow you're metabolism.

I'm not talking about thin people, I'm talking about people that aren't obese. Not being obese isn't a matter of luck, it just takes a little work.

  • What was the bulimic/anorexic's height and weight?
