This was on the first American Astley LP, "Whenever You Need Somebody" and, in the UK, released as a single too. It was doing so monumentally well, that Capitol re-issued the Nat King Cole original version to try to blunt it. I don't know how well that worked, but Astley's version is astonishingly good. Any fool who takes him for just an insubstantial, bubblegum dance record-maker, doesn't know what they're talking about. Liked him 20-plus years ago, and still do.
I don't understand why at the beginning the announcer said it wasn't a good idea to record this. Rick did an absolutely fabulous job of it! He has the voice of an angel.
Agreed , the anouncer is from some other planet , as an american , I found this to be a more than worthy replacement for the original.
rick is a great artist , the problems came as a result of failure to comprehend the synth bass end on a majority of his hits where that was the foundation.
Rick could even do this all over again with a better bass track and it would look like george michael.
I know that Nat King Cole would have loved Ricks version of his mega hit. What a duet if the two of them could have sung this song together!! Ricks version is FANTASTIC!!
Okay, not a great song to lip synch to but a perfectly respectable cover nonetheless. Nat King Cole's version was released as a response and also charted respectably
Steve Wright (the announcer) is such a plank. Nothing wrong with this version at all. probably wasnt even Ricks idea to cover this song anyway, remember at the time he was part of the SAW factory.
One of the most under-rated talents of his generation! Shows the "bad taste" of everyone in that era that his career was so stereotyped and forgotten! Rick-roll indeed?? Should have been a legend!!! His voice is as good or better than Harry Connick Jr............love 'em both!
friggin tosser wright. just sayin what he thinks he should say to be funny not actually listening to the tune and the performance.its ignorant snobbery. im no big fan of rick astley but i love listening to this.
friggin tosser wright. just sayin what he thinks he should say to be funny not actually listening to the tune and the performance.its ignorant snobbery. im no big fan of rick astley but i love listening to this.
the announcer is a fucking nimrod idiot ! he doesnt have working ears & doesnt know what the hell he's talking about- this is a BEAUTIFUL renditiion of a timeless, romantic classic ballad
That was a weird intro. He did an alright job. It's a little different than what he did usually, so I think maybe his fans were taken back a little. He has a very sweet voice. He did a lot better with the disco dance stuff. I love him no matter what he sings.
With hes voice .....he can move mountains .....hes voice is incredible .....and sing that song .....damn ....he can pull it all the way to the end ......
yes totally and in fact, it sounds like a recording of a 50s song...my dad wasn't watching this video and when he heard it when we walked by, he was like, "I didn't know you liked listening to 50s songs"
Man he did an excellent job on this song even if he didnt want to do it; it shows his diversity as an artist PLUS say 30 years later, when he's done doing pop music, he can easily move over to this style if he choose to because he has proven he can do it.
"It's never a good idea to record a Nat King Cole classic," says Steve Wright in the intro.
Well, I remember Rick saying in an interview that he was reluctant to record it and only did so on the assurance that it wouldn't be released as a single - which it then was.
