Starker Glaube an das Vorsehen und den Sinn des Lebens und des Leidens. Obwohl ich eigentlich kein Christ bin, mag ich dieses Lied sehr. Wir haben es auch bei der Bestattung meines Vaters gesungen, der nach einer schweren Krankheit starb. Auch ein Lied für mich, wenn es im Leben schwer ist.

Eine der schoensten Choralmelodien der Welt.-Da mein Wohnhaus in Berlin neben einem Friedhof stand hoerte ich als Kind diesen Choral oft in Blaeserversion,bei Beerdigungen.Die vorliegende Fassung ist zwar huebsch,aber verfehlt,es handelt sich nicht um ein Kinderlied.-Man muss den Hauch des Allmaechtigen spueren,der uns den Fuss lenkt.-Kirchenorgel unentbehrlich.

Dieser starke mit so einer kindliche Stimme unterlege ist schon etwas seheikel . Auch wenn es vielleicht engelgleich ist ihre Stimme, aber vollkommen unpassend. Entschuldigt das ist nur grausam.

Simply beautiful. Do not understand German. Read books by Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who lived early 1900s, died at the hands of Hitler. In his devotional he mentions the song, "Beside your cradle here I stand" by Paul Gerhardt. Have been attempting to find more information. Thank you for this.

@CathyMae0413 These two are maybe the most beautiful german church songs. "Beside yor cradle here I stand" is written by Paul Gerhard and Johann Sebastian Bach. Please take the time to listen to it and read the translation, you won't regret it!! I love modern songs too but they seldom have the depth of these songs that encouraged people through centuries.

Paul Gerhardt hatte damals dieses Lied geschrieben, nachdem er seine Frau und zwei seiner Kinder beerdigen musste. Wenn ich dieses Lied höre, staune ich immer wieder darüber, welchen Glauben dieser Mann hatte.

hey, ich hätte die erste strophe nicht so gut ins englische übrsetzen können, obwohl ich mal in amerika gelebt habe, ich verstehe sie ja kaum im deutschen, respekt!!!

Paul Gerhardt is the most important German church musician and composer of the Lutheran reformation, next to Martin Luther himself.

The text is based on psalm 37.5 and every strophe begins with one word of this one verse.

The whole song is a comforting one and spiritually edifying. "Command your way and what's hurting your heart to the most faithful care of the one, who governs the heaven" is the beginning of the first strophe. In all your sorrows the Lord stands beside you and lead you.
