  • Refreshing video and comments... God bless you all...

  • This cut leaves me wanting more They both have such beautiful voices

  • everyone needs to stop focussing on the religious side and just LISTEN TO THE MUSIC - so beautiful

  • Thank you Jesus

  • ;0)

  • This made the hairs on my neck stand up.

  • Very much like traditional gospel, and Odetta is so soulful here. Wow!!

  • What a fantastic performance! Thank you for sharing this wonderful hymn. I used to sing this song so much when I was growing up.

  • Very good singing. Just some irony here is that while a black woman is singing the choir behind her doesn't have one black person, or so it seems, yet they try to sound like it's at a black church with deep voices

  • @StopFear I guess we are not supposed to notice that... kind of like we are not supposed to notice who is doing the vast majority of violent crime in our cities. I guess it works both ways.

  • They just don't sing 'em like they used to.

Does anyone know the date that this particular show was recorded?

  • I woke up singin this song this morning. Its been a song that has comforted me through the week

  • what harmony-the backup singers are A+, reminds me of Elvis with JD Sumner and the Stamps. Superb!

  • Amazing voice!

  • this woman is wonderful. Her message is beautiful.

  • Ah this is how i love it to be sung! Nice and slowly, lets you think about it.

  • WoW the voice of Odetta but there is sometings that no one talk about.....she looks so sad...

  • @2010shemaiah Of course she's sad, look at her surroundings.... It all has to do with her times, which continue to be our times, but in a more covert way. She's singing with the race that oppressed and continues to oppressed us.

  • @actionsrlouder Numbers 6:24,26

May The Lord bless you and keep you.

May the Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you.

May the Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace.

God Bless you In Yeshoua name

    AMEN

  • @2010shemaiah Thanks for those words, you made me teary. What inspired those towards me?

  • Beautiful!!!

  • too bad the young people won't take a look at the incredible talent of the past...2 great spirits...Ernie and Odetta

  • @fmazzar I'm sixteen... And I absolutely LOVE this type of music. I love it because the lyrics are clean, understandable, and the voices who sang them were gifts from God.. today, if you can keep a beat and remember the words to a song, they can make your voice sound good, and It makes me lose sleep at night thinking about how my generation is being fed crappy music I can't even call some of it music. I wish people would recognize the talent that existed back then and look for it now

  • @LearnToTurn7 Amen brother !!!! i

  • I had forgotten Odetta, what a beautiful voice and pairing of talent.

  • when the man up yonder mademade them he broke the moulds

  • 'nough said

  • Elkabong2k......................WHATEVER MAN~

  • Praise the Lord !! I am A Christian. This a very Beautiful version of this traditional Hymn. @ atheists' That is what God Does through his Word and Music he cuts right through to our inner most being, helps us see the truth Why we truly are here on Earth. Read Hebrews 4:12 KJV

  • i love the old hymns there's something comforting about them. and odetta has an amazing voice. and old ern is just breaktaking.

  • another atheist piping in here to concur that this is a fantastic interpretation of a classic song!

  • a wonderful, wonderful song sung beautifully! thank you for sharing this video.

  • Bet I saw this when I was a kid but had forgotten. So lucky to have Odetta and Tennessee together. Wonderful. Joseph Scriven older brother of my great great Grandmother Jane Scriven. World seems unaware of Jane so I just opened a blog for her, Drop by and say "Hi', Best Wishes, Katie

Katie's Scriven Hall (sorry can't put connection or this won't post :)

  • Very calming to hear.

  • Absolutely beautiful! My church choir sang this song (in Chinese) recently, too! Welcome to my channel and give thanks to our best friend and our Lord Jesus Christ! Greetings from Hong Kong, China!

  • ALLEUIA

  • Wow. Inspiring.

  • That woman is a lovely singer.

  • Wish we could have had the whole song...

  • Anyone know what year this show aired?

My guess is the early 60's but just guessing.

  • Imagine this on network tv now!

  • I remember learning this lovely old hymn at my grand parents church.

  • Lovely duet of two classically trained singers who made their careers in traditional and popular music. Both of them figure huge for music in general! I personally loved both of them and miss them both.

  • Hallelujah.THANK YOU in HUNGARY

  • excellent!

  • Amen

  • Tennessee also performed with Della Reese, too.

  • Obvious Troll is Obvious

  • such a pitty, ppl tell me, this songs are classiker? Because her modern music of Satan? I think the holy Ghost is in this music, not also in the singers but in the inspiration ppl who wrote this songs Amen

    Lg G.

  • Deus nobis haec musica fecit.

(God has given us this music)

  • Goddamn beautiful!

    Oops!

  • I've always liked Ernie Ford and Odetta both and for them to be performing together in that time in history is unusual

  • I do like this song and to see those two singing it together was somewhat special.

  • i like =)

  • OMG

  • I Will always love this song. I remember when I was invited to the alter with this song playing. I was very much in need of peace in my heart and mind. This song broke me and I could then receive the love of God, when I thought he would never open up to me.

  • ... when I hear this song...

    ... mmmm...

it fills my spirit with happiness and longing to meet my Savior Jesus of Nasareth

    Karlott

  • I'm an atheist, and i love this song. It's moving stuff.

  • God Bless you dear.. He the Lord loves YOU with an everlasting love.. why? because are fearfully and wonderfully made Psalm 139. We were made by God for His glory He put the love in us because He is love.. "whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be save." God

He wants you to live in Heaven and have a wonderful unspeakable joy for eternity.

Two sides, one is dark one is light

choose light : ) I'll be praying for you sweety

    Steph

  • Thanks, but I'm OK, I'm an overchurched atheist, heard it all before, and hearing it is what makes me not believe. I respect the sincerity of both those singing in the video and those who believe, but once again, no thank you. My original comment was just a statement to the profundity of music in general, and this song in particular. You take care.

  • I read you comment about you being an atheist. No matter what you or I choose to believe means nothing unless it is based on truth. Truth does not, will not, or can not change just because you refuse to believe it. God loves you, people have let you down, you have let yourself down, the same thing has happened to me. See 2nd part

  • @elkabong2k I understand your feelings... fortunately for me, God has made himself known to me and done things that defy explanation. I'm sorry that you have been missed by his touch.

  • Well, BlacknWhite, we Christians are not perfect. Lord knows I'm not! We all got our demons. Did you know that Tennessee Ernie's demon was Cutty Sark whiskey?

Yep, He was a Christian, but he also had trouble with the bottle, too.

  • The issue isn't that Christians (or anyone else for that matter) aren't perfect. It's just that we can't appreciate the song without people being pushy.

  • Well, sweetie, was I being pushy? I didn't think I was. I was just stating a fact that no one is perfect. But hallejuh! Praise be to Jesus we will be in the end!

    I'll be a perfect size 6! lol

  • @fallingwater4750 thats cute perfect size 6

  • @fallingwater4750 ahahahaha love it. Praise be to our Father.

  • @elkabong2k

Great news, if you love this song you are not an atheist.

God is calling you, come to him.

  • Same here.

  • @elkabong2k =

If indeed you are an atheist, you're a very RARE one that would admit that something that smacks of "religion" affects him for good! I implore you to fan this ember and "taste and see that the Lord is good"! There are countless ex-atheists that could tell you about what led to their conversion, and why they would NEVER go back to their former lives!

If you'd like to know more, contact me! Otherwise, I'll leave you alone except to mention you to the One who knows you best!

  • @tigerlilly66 I'm a lapsed atheist myself and you're right, I wouldn't want to go back to refusing Jesus as the Saviour. It's not easy and I'm still pretty new to full on conversion (not even baptised yet), but it's sooooo worth it. :) God bless.

  • @forgetfulmuse =

Just in case...your salvation is secure, whether or not you get baptized! Baptism is the first commandment to believers after salvation, so I encourage you to get it done ASAP, but don't let anyone tell you it is part of the salvation process as it is NOT! I hope you're either in a good church now or soon will be. I'm independent Baptist and would recommend one in your town. I'm thrilled that you even know enough to spell Saviour correctly...good for you!

    P T L !

  • @tigerlilly66 Thanks, I know. I'm attending a Catholic church and will be baptised at Easter Vigil (April 23rd 2011) after completing the RCIA course. :) My kids will be baptised at the same time as I didn't have them baptised when they were younger, so it's pretty exciting! My brother is doing it too, so it'll be a family affair. It really is like a rebirth; now there's something I never thought I'd hear myself say!

  • @forgetfulmuse congrats! I remember when I did my RCIA course!

  • @forgetfulmuse Good for you and your family. I hope you become good orthodox catholics. Check out Bishop Sheen's vidoes and RealCatholicTV on youtube. God Bless.

  • @elkabong2k Thats because God is real!:)

  • @elkabong2k Why? Can you not see everything is in perfect positions in our universe. The "big bang" did it create a car or a wrist watch? So how did a pop cause all this. Think about it. I have know atheists but the atheists I knew never died.

  • @bluetowes Check out the TV reality show called I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant.Click on the episode I pooped a baby.At the end the narrator says to check your stools for children. There is a higher power. What is a greater miracle than the miracle of pooping a baby? And what greater proof of Jesus than wolf-killing Sarah Palin having a Down's Syndrome baby. Which at least she had the decency to not flush it Downs the toilet.Maybe she will severe its foreleg and give herself a bounty reward.

  • @etbella3 what are you talking about? are you saying that sarah palin was punished by having down´s syndrome baby ? you don´n t konw nothing about having babies, pregnancy or being mother. So about Jesus.

  • @etbella3 It's Old Testament thought that says "Bless god and He'll bless you, curse Him and he'll curse you." There is a new covenant to get under. Am I casting pearls before swine or do hear what I'm telling you? That is good news. Or is this about Palin? Can't see why she stirs up so many people that say she's a nothing with nothing to offer yet they keep attacking her. Maybe she'll go away if everyone ignores her. Or maybe she has some good things to say if people actually listen.

  • @elkabong2k Keep Listening to This song, maybe ya change your mind.

  • @elkabong2k My friend if u love this song you are not atheist no more...May God keep shining His light and grace upon you!

  • AMEN to this message in this song...The Lord is so gracious!! AMEN AMEN!!

  • Darwin was a man with an unsound mind

  • I've yet to meet a person who didn't have some unsoundness to their mind.

The conclusions he drew from his observations are certainly unsettling, but the concept that our bodies are literally nothing more than dust and ashes (and water), is an important reminder of our own frailty.

That we were made from the clay of the earth is, for all practical purposes, literally true. What amazes me is that the concept that there might have been some intermediate steps causes such a furor.

  • Thanks the the post.. I needed this... God Bless.

  • omg! in indonesia, this is one of the national song that we have! called "ibu pertiwi".

and it was just a plagiarism. how could it be................

  • Its not plagarism if you borrow someone elses stuff and give the referenece.

  • YES.

Dogma keeps people in the dark.

For the record, Odetta is a pop icon although much more and lovelier than that as well.

If part of what you meant was longing for a simpler time or something like that, yes I respect that.

Values change and are not morals which is what a lot of evangelicals dont seem to get.

    Who knows you might.

  • What do you think Dogma is? If you think it's a random grab-bag of beliefs, then it's not worth saving, but it's NOT!

Dogma is a system of belief espoused by those with life experience. Casting away the knowledge and experience of your forefathers is simply ignorant.

LIFE and FAMILY have developed logically, not randomly, even DARWIN teaches us that random, illogical behavior leads to death, not prosperity.

Christianity makes more sense than most alternatives. Entropy makes no sense at all

  • YES.

Dogma keeps people in the dark.

I do agree that pop culture can be shallow, but within it ideas are represented and built upon which within the slag heap, shows a progression forward into change which keeps people from being complacent OR dogmatic about things.

  • AAAA. 192144Z MAY 2009 Very nice thank you for posting.......AR.

  • Beautiful!

  • This was pretty progressive for its time. Think about it.

  • that "guy" is Tennessee Ernie Ford, his voice is a real mans voice, he doesn't sing on the tone of a women, go watch justin timberfag dumb kid

  • why does that guy have to sing? It was going soo good. LOL!

  • Beautiful.Thank you.God bless you.

  • What a Beautiful alto Voice,is she still around?

  • "If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land." II Chronicles 7: 14

  • beautiful verse, one of my favorite but does not answer my question.

  • She had the bad fortune to follow a band, I don't remember who, who was a bit raucous. Some of the audience was a bit restless, and you could tell it was hurting her feelings. Then some teenagers started making noise in the lobby outside by the pay phone, and Odetta was on the verge of tears. I walked out there and shushed them, then came back to my seat. Odetta beamed at me for the rest of her performance. Needless to say I'll never forget it.

  • Thank You,my father tells of a similia situation with Sam Cooke when he was on stage wiht the Soul Stirrers. While he was tryingto sing, people were booing, some saying "get offthe stage Blues Singer".Sam never return to Gospel after that.

  • She just died last year. I saw her live and up close in The Bottom Line in Greenwich Village in 1977. A rare voice indeed.

  • i would have loved to hear her.

  • What a glorious voice!

  • He is the creator of all things and the power over everything and He calls us Friend!

  • I like Tennessee Ernie Ford as much as the next man, but I think you're going slightly overboard.

  • That was funny, you made me laugh!!!

  • Comment removed

  • T.E.Ford or God ?

  • God you sillyhead!

  • Again, the problem here is in specifics.

Do you mean God is a silly head? Or did you mean my God, Gary Texas is a silly head?

  • No, I mean you Garytexas are a, oh never mind.

  • All in fun, My friend, all in fun

    what a wonderful song

  • You made it fun! Check out my channel, I just invited you to be friends, we are the same age also, God Bless You, Nina.

  • Oh what needless pain we bear, all because we do not carry

  • My favourite hymn, beautifully sung. But my favourite version is by Jo Stafford.

  • she didn't need the adornment of the chorus in the background. T.E. Ford sounded good though..

  • The adornment of the background vocalists added to the glorification of Jesus; the Lord loves praise from all His children and respects no one individual more than the rest. She was a great singer, as was Ernie Ford..but this was a recording of Ford's TV show and she was a guest and they were his backup vocalists and God approved so that is all that mattered. She blessed us all without having a solo spotlight. May we be blessed by more multiracial praise performances by others in the future!

  • I believe this is from march 10th, 1960

  • Thank you Jesus!

  • So beautiful!!!

  • What a lovely duet...rest in peace, Odetta and Ern! You both brought many wondrous performances to us.

    Jim

  • Lovely video Erik Thanks. Carol x

  • Another great has gone. But we are blessed that she was here. RIP.

  • WOW! Odetta has amazingly beautiful deep voice!!!

  • She has awakened from the dream of life.

  • RIP

  • Life is but a brief hello. Thank you for stopping by.

  • beautiful. RIP Odetta you were the queen of Folk; and Ernie you recognized talent always.

  • thank you, odetta. what a legacy you leave us.

  • Good night, Odetta. I am so glad to have seen you perform in the 1970s and then again just last year. You might have been in a wheelchair, but your voice was as amazing as ever.

  • As I mourn Odetta, this clip also sharply increases my respect for ol' Tennessee Ernie.

I never knew he'd done this. And, given that this looks like it was in the Fifties, he must have taken some major shit from NBC(I think he was still doing his show there at the time)for having her on and singing with him.

Put that together with Tennessee's having sung "Sixteen Tons", during the anti-worker and anti-union late 40's, and he could be a surprising guy at times.

  • Goodbye Odetta

  • Rest in peace, Odetta.

  • This is just Absolutely beautiful wonderful , rich pure voices, singing together, and to see Odetta sing wiht Ernie Ford is pure joy , thank you for shareing this with us.

  • She's so lovely! I wonder how this went over when it was first broadcast- a black woman singing with a bunch of whites on television!

  • It looks as if this isnt the complete video. How about much more of his gospel songs, cause he was as good as elvis, with his gospel

  • Beautiful! Read National Sunday Law by Jan Marcussen soon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This was so ahead of its time! What a wonderful piece of history...and what a wonderful example being set.

  • Beautiful and moving, thank you!

  • Simply awesome!

  • Nice clip. Odetta's voice is so pure.

  • Absolutely beautiful!

  • A beautiful rendition of an old meaningful prayer

  • This is great.

  • That brought tears to my eyes, one of my favorite old hymns, thanks.

  • During the civil rights movement, music, especially spiritual music, was a great uniter of black and white people. It's message resonated the principles of love and understanding that so many disillusioned folks in both camps were striving to achieve. Music was sometimes the first bridge through which people achieved understanding. The power of the great spiritual songbook is undiminished to this day, and it's wonderful hear this music and be reminded of it's message of grace and perseverance.

  • twisted

  • light is becoming the sign of glory

it is a wittness for those who don't know

the true meaning of Jesus story .

for it is he that shall dwell in anrightious places .hold your head up let the world see me in you ,for this is the day that I have made. so my arms is still open and you don't have to pay any tokens.I just need a soilder that when it come my will be spoken. Be Bless .

  • BEAUTIFUL!

  • THAT WAS FANTASTIC !!!!!!!!

  • This woman was an angel, playing at the Gaslight in NYC in the early '70's as we all sang along. I will never forget those phenomenal performances, straight from the heart with so much power to boot. Odetta sang with real meaning, that I have never heard before or since.

  • YES..an angel indeed, I have to agree!!

  • lucky U sweetie
