Great lyrics - fantastic song! I "think" the noise is probably created by what's called a vocoder (like a microphone effect) unless the guy is a genius Tibetan kumei throat singer as well? I can here his singing voice carrying a modulated theramin-type overtone ;) Is possible though.

The weird vocal noise at the start is made by (or supposed to sound like) a Theramin.

However, when he does it live, he just puts a nice distortion on his voice (not sure which one it actually is on the record, possibly both)

@redmistpete that sound is just Newton messing around with his voice with some reverb. Came about when he wanted a theremin sound but couldn't find one and he explained it to his producer using that sound and his producer just asked "why don't you just do that so?"
