The biggest handicap of a tandem is transportation. It does not fit on a regular trailer hitch rack. Til now we ride out from the house, but my wife limits it to a fifteen mile radius As her rear gets stronger, hopefully we will extend that distance.
I had a good idea of putting the pedals 90 degrees out of phase so that one person would always have their pedals in the 'power stroke' position. If the legs don't bump together this is a good idea.
Another thing would be to have independent gearing as I like to pedal at 100 rpm and say if I went tandeming with my mum who prefers 60 rpm, then she might just be acting as a 'brake' as I force her to spin faster than her natural cadence.
@TimpBizkit The whole point of the tandem is that both people can ride together. This requires a compromise on pace and you cannot pedal out of phase with a 90 degree offset
@Remy0928 you can you just adjust the timing chain. It's useful for smoothing out the power and making sure the tandem can't stall ever. You do have to make sure that pedals aren't touching the ground on tight bends but this is manageable if the captain's tandem is 45 deg forwards and the stoker's is 45 deg backwards
but that sounds cool i wanna ride one with my cousin and see how fast we can go
I'd set the chain so that the back pedal is horizontal while the front is vertical; then as I pedal down , he would pedal down before i do with my other foot.
I just purchased a new tandem bike and i have a 7 year old daughter just wanted some tips on riding them and you provided me with lots of answers thank you

@Websters52 For that price you will find nothing decent new. Buy a used quality bike such as Burley at that price point.

lots of tandems have both chains on one side. the timing chain can go on either side and is not "unique" at all to a tandem.

no it's not. but hes saying it is unique to regular bikes
