  • hi pink,

are there plenty of math in HIM program? math is really one of my weakness. I was debating between nursing and HIM but watching your video really convinced me of going into HIM instead. Thank u so much for the information :-)

  • Hi Pink, I'm an undergrad student looking into health care careers and am interested in HIM. I'm also a new mom and definitely don't want to spend my life in an office working over 40 hr/wk. Are there any HIM jobs that would be appropriate for a young working mom, or should I look in a different direction for a career? Are there any part-time HIM positions that you've heard of? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

  • @letsgopensnat There are part time positions in HIM in a capacities. HIM is a very diverse field and there are a lot of job opportunities. I suggest that you visit the AHIMA website and search around for a while and you'll find a lot of useful information. Sorry it took me a while to respond.

  • Is this still a good career to get into or is it flooded with new grads and tons of competition? I am thinking of getting either my Associates in Business admin or Associates in Health Information Management.

  • @25aholes HIM is still a growing field and is in no way saturated. The only way I can see saturation is if you live in an area w/ lots of schools but not a lot of hospitals. Check the US Labor job boards about the field to get more accurate numbers. Also visit the AHIMA website for more info.

  • I'm in a nursing program and hate direct patient care. NOT FOR ME. I'm considering quitting but have no idea where to go afterwards. I want to stay in the medical field. Good personal skills and fine motor skills are a must for nursing. Whats a must for this career?

  • Thanks you for doing thi! video. It is very educational.

  • Hey, I received my A.A degree @ Hinds too! Im thinking about taking this degree online....a school that requires a lot of hands on volunteer time...do you think its good to take this major online? Can I receive a HIM degree and still work as a HIT just to start off ?

  • @CoilyShay09 Honestly, I only think you should do an online degree because a school isn't close by or work restraints. The program at Hinds is a great one. If your interested in the BS program UMMC is great and they offer it in the classroom as well as online. Ann Peden is the person you should talk to.

  • I am considering going into HIM. I recently resigned from a nursing program. Do you think it's a good choice? The ex nursing students that go into HIM say they like it a lot and it isn't as stressful (which I def need right now). I think overall is that I am worried about the pay :/

  • what's the difference between medical coding and H.I.M coding? thank you

  • @organicloc They are the same thing but the big difference is in the setting that it's done and who does it. In hospitals and clinics affiliated with hospitals the coding is done by a licensed professional. In doctors offices the person doing it may not be licensed.

  • Thanks for your reply. Also, about your video: I see those patient charts are very thick. How long does it take to have one single chart read? Do you apply any especial technique to read faster?

  • @capeyorker09 Those charts are for LTAC patients and they spend a longer amount of time than most patient. Usually 25 days or more. I've usually read the patient's chart throughout their stay at the hospital just to keep on top of the coding and would take about 2-3 hours after discharge to read through it again for the final time. I'm just a fast reader but I don't know some coders that have taken a speed reading to help their speed.

  • Your video is very informative. Looking for info about this career and it really helps me figure out if this is what I want to do. Two questions: Is medical transcripcion also part of this job? Is speaking another language somehow useful for this kind of job, in what way?. Thanks so much.

  • @capeyorker09 Medical Transcription is not a very big part of an HIT degree but it can be useful and applied to that job if that's your interest. Also, I don't really see where being bi-lingual is helpful in this field. We really don't speak to a general public that much so I don't really know where you'd use it. I guess it just really depends on your job function.

  • This is wonderful! I've been interested in HIM for a while and Im glad i found your vid! BTW, I see your a member of GPhiD and ive looked up there website. Currently im in San Diego, CA. and hope to learn more about the sisterhood as well.

  • @rainbowdiva954 I'm glad my video could help you. Yes, I'm a member of GPD and I hope you have good luck with a chapter in your area!

  • Has anyone enrolled in Devry University' HIT associates degree program? How is it?

  • I hate Accounting do you have to take an accounting course in the HIT program?

  • @CoilyShay09 Nope, you don't have to take accounting for an HIT program, but to be on the safe side make sure you check the course schedule for the program that you choose.

  • Hi Pink,

I really appreciate your videos. Is it better to get your associates degree in H.I.T, get some work experience and THEN go for a Bachelor's in H.I.M later on, or would you go straight through the 4 year degree plan to just get the HIM degree?

My last question is if there is any difference earning your degree online as opposed to on-campus??? i believe you earned your HIT on campus but you are online for your HIM....Thank you so much for your time!

  • @fromanotherstar How you gain your degree is basically up to you and what works best in your life. The opportunities are the same either way. Online versus on campus just depends on your focus ability and how you work. I've done both and I prefer campus. It's just easier when it comes to getting help and being able to ask questions. Yet, I'll be finishing my HIM BS online. It can be harder online.

  • Just discovered this video and i appreciate all of the effort you have put forth in making this and sharing your expertise in this excting field. I start school soon and am super excited.....Thanks so much.....

  • @Sunshyne3640 You are very welcome and I'm glad that the video helped.

  • Thanks for a great video. I am just looking into going to college for this and was trying to find more info on this type of career path. Very informative. Now going to search for more videos by you! :)

  • @womandriver2 I am glad that I could help you!

  • I am in school in a HIT program and I really appreciate your informative videos

  • @MrsSdixson I am glad that I can help.

  • how hard was it for you to find a job after graduation? everyone is telling me that medical coding job is flooded and everyone wants experience, which makes me very nervous because i don't have time or the money to go back to college to do something else. PLEASE let me know! how did you gain experience? especially in this horrible job market.

  • @BLACKBEAUTY8989 I got a job before I graduated but that's how I sold myself. Now my 1st job wasn't coding. I was medical records manager in a nursing home. But it was something. I'll address this in a new video.

  • @pinkdes2ny thank you SOO much for responding =D

  • What do you do at your job? Be specific, please......... =)

  • Only you can know if you made the right choice, but I say that if you are enjoying your classes then you will enjoy the field. Don't forget to join AHIMA and sit for your RHIT exam as soon as possible. Take the prep courses if you can.

Jobs are plentiful in the field so just focus on the part of HIM that you want to go into and plan your moves. Please contact me if you need any help!

  • Thanks for showing us your office and system. Is your job stressful?

  • My name is Leslie, and right now I am in my 3rd semester at Devry University for my health information technology associates degree. I wanted to know if you liked your job, and if i am making the right choice. Also is it hard to find a job in the field.

  • Hope you are having a great day ^_^

    God bless you
