Meh okay game, but I stopped playing it months ago since the gameplay lacks skill and leveling is slow in this game. Also they barely update the game, there's not stats, NPC does interaction with the storyline, there's no class and your character does walk in the world, you just click an arrow to let them move.

You do not need to do either, although I recommend that you do download the client. Your game is less likely to "freeze up" that way.

And the pay to play part... it is not required but you will gain a better edge on the competition if you do so.
