The ceiling exploit does take some of the bite out of a very difficult level. I'm guessing it was intentional; it seems too perfect to have been a happy coincidence.
At the mini boss, the ceiling doesn't hurt you. The hit boxes of the first and third ceiling guns don't extend to the top, so you can safely squeeze in.

this game would have been a real money muncher if it was in the arcades, it would have cost an absolute fortune just to learn the patterns.
