the guy after Donny Osmond has the best vocals for this (who is he?), spotted Matt Lattanzi (Olivia NJ's-ex) with headband among the hopefuls, great legs on Marilyn McCoo! interesting video, awesome guitar work by JB, thanks for posting
@necklix It's dreadful in as much as all these 'pop people' spoil it, but if thats your thing,,,,
I said it can't be Jeff's favorite, I came up with that all by myself, that's what's known as an opinion. If you had taken the time to read the comment I said 'his playing is superb as always' NOT 'I'm better than him!.
As far as your 'rule of thumb' goes you can shuv it up your arse, you've not got the faintest clue how I can play.
Awesome! Haven't seen this video since I saw it one Saturday morning in about 1986. I though then, and still think, it was one of the best productions I'd ever seen. The idea of all these pop stars out of work and lining up for auditions is a brilliant theme.
@glaetze - Or... any member of "Ready for the World" or "Jesse Johnson's Review" or "The Time" or "The Revolution" (excluding Prince). In other words, "no" that isn't Michael Jackson but could be any musician/singer from that time period who was in a funk or soul band.
@glaetze Not really. Consider this video was made back in 1985 and it's meant to tease the Superstars of the moment. If you take a close look, you'll also spot a Madonna lookalike at 1:47 :-)
Jeff is still so good and innovative. Even back in the 60s, Jimi Hendrix sought out Jeff, while he was in England with the Jimi Hendrix Experience, in order to learn new riffs from Jeff. Jimi once said Jeff was the only English cat that taught him new styles to play.
"Great... Great sandwhich" good song, this really shows Jeff is a really good guitarist... still not an Eddie Van Halen, but in the top 10 of the best guitarists.
@TCall2004 EVH is great for a lot of reasons; so is Jeff Beck; Eric Clapton in a different type of style - but great in that style of playing; Pete Townsend - not an F'n chance - The Who was a great band but Pete Townsend was considered a frustrated guitarist - great showman - not much of a guitarist.
@johntg123 - To be fair, Pete Townshend as a guitarist is more a 'stylist' than a 'great'. His chording technique is highly unique, and like, say Jeff Beck and Hendrix, being and sounding unique is one key to greatness.
@TCall2004 I totally disagree, and I've played guitar for 15 years. Van Halen is vastly superior to Clapton and Townsend. And better than Beck in my opinion. Van Halen boosted the interest of the guitar again in the 80's to epic proportions, to such a level that it created a flood of guitarists who were technically far superior to any period before.
@ojideagu EVH???? Are you kidding!!! What has he done in 15 years???? EVH couldn't hold a guitar pick to Beck,Clapton,Page,SRV, and most of all Buddy Guy!!!
@ojideagu - Ironically (and surprisingly given the difference in styles) EVH's main influence was Eric Clapton, who - w/Hendrix - is arguable the most influential of all modern guitarists. I'm no EC fan and would argue the Jeff Beck has been the most aspirational player, with the likes of Hendrix and SRV, Page, Clapton, Perry, Vai, Satriani, and even Les Paul himself citing him as the 'best' (read: most creatve, daring and inspirational). EVH hits that bill, but only for a generation.
@ojideagu The UK must have forgot about some of their own!!!! Michael Schenker,Brian Robertson both run circles around EVH. Jeff Beck, alone, is far superior to EVH!!!
@redhead5150 EVH was put above everyone from the 80's in the poll. For the influence he created. He created the craze of fast finger tapping for example. Every guitarist from the 80's was influenced by him. Go and research how many grew up practicing Eruption compared to anything Schenker or Jeff Beck have composed.
@ojideagu Ace Frehley,Joe Perry are two guitarist who where influenced by Jeff Beck. U.F.O. and THIN LIZZY were two bands that set the stage for guitar riffs, listen to Mother Mary by U.F.O. and The Cowboy Song by Thin Lizzy and tell me these guys didn't lay down the foundation for guys like EVH!!
@redhead5150 Jimi Hendrix was around at the same time as Jeff Beck. But it was Hendrix who influenced and inspired the revival of a new wave of guitarists over Beck. The same with EVH. Van Halen almost invented the modern guitar sound, with the tapping and dive bombing craze which influenced thousands of players including people like Steve Vai. Everyone now takes it for granted.
Jeff Beck is a very talented guitarist, but he didn't influence the guitar population in the same way.
@ojideagu - EVH, EC and PT have been good at - basically - one thing. Beck has transformed guitarring so many times. From the ripping blues then raga-psych of the Yardbirds, heavy blues/rock (template for Led Zep) with Jeff Beck Group #1, jazz-rock fusion with 'Blow by Blow' and 'Wired'...insanity with 'Guitar Shop' he has moved guitar forward. EVH has been great at - basically one thing, great as it is. EC has had his moments, but was never original. PT is effective for his tunes.
and then there was Beck...

I love this it's great!!! No one said it was Jeff's favorite, were did you get that???
It's fun, he has a great sense of humor, and plays guitar well, no one comes close, he won a long time ago!
