I have been listening to this song for as long as I can remember and I just realized that the teacher is called Mrs. Aryan. Steve Taylor is a brilliant genius and I love his music.
Why do you "miss" him? He's still around and about to release a movie with Don Miller (of Blue Like Jazz fame). Steve Taylor rocks!!! (Even in this brilliant early 80's satirical video).
@Esperanza29331 well listen to the children ,,, im sure youll figure it out ,,,, here ill give you a hint ,, mrs Aryan thinks the perfect blue eyed man and the mrs Collens should be left in the life boat ,,,,, the perfect ones ,,, THINK
Steve, we miss you and will love you forever. You are the most awesome musician ever in the Christian music field. Even with a lost compass, I still love you and am so glad you blessed my life.
I remember this video. I also remember "playing lifeboat" values clarification exercise in my psychology class in high school. I think it taught us more about ourselves than about life, what we valued and what we dismissed way too easily and dispassionately. I'm not sure it was useful for anything other than possibly a federal study of what 15 year olds (or younger, like the ones in this video) thought was important in life.
I haven't heard this song in decades. Times have changed... I was a little suprised by the lyric, "Throw out the retard so he won't be rockin' the boat."
Wow. This one takes me back. I heard this in jr. high. I was a huge steve taylor fan back in the day. I still have cassettes of the meltdown album and i predict 1990. chagall guevera was great stuff too.
I remember this song well. My son was about 6 when we heard it and he could sing the entire song. He met Steve the next year at Cornerstone Fest and he was discussing music with him.
There was a "game" in the 80's that was used in some classrooms to "teach" children how to be selective about who were the most productive in society (i.e. ranking the masses). The song is satire...showing that the "game" was just indoctrination of children, "teaching" them that the most productive were the most perfect.
@Lotsoffun111 It's talking about at the time when schools were teaching kids about some people were more important then others, it caused outrage by smart people and thus this song was born ;)
I think, instead of the government handing out cash to anyone who's unemployed, the welfare system should revolve around helping people get jobs. "Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will feed for a lifetime."
I think its highly unjust to take money from people who do work and give it to people who don't - that's why we don't have feudalism anymore. As a civilized world, we should help the poor, but that shouldn't include every bum too lazy to get a job.
Steve Taylor, the only Christian artist who dared to "clone" the David Bowie sound at the time. Back in the day I had hair kinda like his as I was into the new wave thing & my mom wouldn't let me grow a mullet. The message is definitely still relevant.
"Maybe we'all stumbled upon WHY his lack of commercial success in the past...if he'd done a "Mrs. Doubtfire" or "Tootsie" stage show, he could have been a HUGE SMASH HIT!!!"
If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. John 15:19
This is what will happen with Government National Health Care. Some will be accepted for treatments and others won't. There won't be enough money to treat everyone, especially with expensive life saving treatments.
You can be certain that the rich and "pretty people" will get their treatments while the blind and disabled will be left on the side of the road. It is the history of all totalitarian governments to discard those they consider a burden on "the system."
Currently, overweight lifelong smokers who overeat simple sugars and thus incur expensive chronic ailments are treated by our hospitals free of charge.
OK, Christians can point the finger of blame, but can they govern through these complex issues?
As a Christian, I find this comment ignorant. This is what is happening right NOW with health care. I cannot afford health care, and I find it completely disgusting that loving Christians would prefer that we people under the poverty level not have health care under the banner of the free market and "choice."
I CAN afford health insurance, but I don't want it because I consider insurance companies to be scam artists (akin to Enron, Goldman Sachs, et cetera).
But instead my government is going to fine me almost $3000 for not having it. That's anti-freedom
Talk about ignorance. Government healthcare will be a failure, just like it is everywhere else. Far more people will die under such system. If you were really a Christian you would take the responcibility to help others on yourself rather than asking the government to steal from one to give to another. it's called Natural Law, or Natural Rights. Check out the Dec. Ind. you ignorant lib. Supporting Gov. healthcare is a sin, as you will harm others in the name of good.
just FYI, the new healthcare bill has nothing to do with caring about people, it's part of the NWO agenda. Look into it, be a sheep for Christ, not the powers that be. You are being lied to, ok?
Google Alex Jones, Endgame. Or, Google video Wake Up Call. ALL Christians need to know this. Wake up everybody.
Your own government believes in the "life boat" philosophy, that's why they are putting out swine flu in the populous and have mass graves for the weak to die off.
The secular world plays "life boat" and our kids are taught to "kill" others who are less important (i.e., christians and old people). This is proven fact.
Is this really taught in school? We played a game where there was a shipwreck, but we had to decide what things to save & we could only save 3 things.
I love Steve Taylor - I've only waited 20 or so years to see this video - funny stuff! I wonder what these kids (now grown up) think (or thought of the video at the time?!? Thanks for posting this!
kazbianco - you got me wondering, so I googled "lifeboat values clarification", and apparently it is very true - some really interesting discussions out there about this...
