When I met Shane first in1984 he had already been drunk for more than a decade he was one of the original punks. He's 6 months older than me and i've not been exactly clean for the last 35 years. I fear for him because he's been using heroin on top of the booze since late 80's early 90's.A rehab already gave him 6 mths to live and that was over 15 yrs ago.
I disagree with the opinion that Pogues without Shane are nothing. They sound amazing anytime, and Phil sings "Thousands" just perfectly! The same with Spider in "tuesday morning" and Terry in "young ned". Of course, I don't question his genius and talent, but I would never question their talents either.
Sorry i forgot to say what i originally wanted which was that apart from Thousands are Sailing and a couple of others Shane WAS the Pogues and he wrote the bulk of the songs that were not traditional irish folk songs. I would not go to see the pogues without Shane [even with joe strummer who i really liked], if i was paid to. There, got it all out!
Shane Mcgowan has drunk solidly for over a decade. It is most vertain that he's going to have liver damage and I can't see him living much longer. The damage is irresversible. Fantastic Singer...but never cared for his appearance. For him to stop drinking it would probably kill him literally
his appearance is a big part of what makes him such an icon. there's lots of great irish singers but shane is in his own league because of his persona as much as his songwriting.
I really hope Shane gets clean and finds some help because when i saw him on the dropkick murphys dvd and some recent concerts, at what i saw i cant see him living for more than 5 more years
I agree, he clearly wrote most of the Pogues Classics, and what a great poet he is :) Thou he has really messed up his voice... He`s screaming the ballads! Thou the album version of this song (sung by Shane) is amacing!
Is this post Shane MacGowan ? Or is it before they reunited?? I can`t see him hanging around in the backround, as he uasually do when some of his bandmates has the mike... Still most of the band members can sing quite well, and Phil Chevron wrote this song :)
Phil has sung this one on the last 3 or 4 tours. Shane normally leaves the stage for this and when Spider sings Tuesday Morning and when Terry sings Young Ned of the Hill.
Shane's been getting 6 months to live for 20 years.
Amazing band and a beautiful song!
