While my favorite "Dracula" was the 1979 version with Frank Langella and Sir Laurence Olivier, I have a really healthy respect for this version.
Peter Cushing may be all the more popular for his work in STAR WARS, but his work in this "Dracula" film does him way more justice. The hero who knows research is half the battle, and despite his age, he walks into the dangerous 2nd half of the battle.
As much as I love the dynamic between Chris Lee and Peter Cushing in the drac/van helsing movies, I am torn. I really think Dr. Frankenstein might be Cushing's best role. His obsessed researcher with no moral compasswho is smarter than everyone else is perfect. But I love the plot of this movie. Dracula can't die, eternal life does kinda turn out to suck, so he decides to destroy the world. I actually kinda feel sympathy for him.
@trapadoored I haven't seen him in "Frankenstein," so I can't comment. But I prefer Mr. Cushing's good guy role here to his more popular bad guy role in "Star Wars."
Frank Langella also underlined that eternal life is not all it's cracked up to be. That's one reason I like the 1979 Langella/Olivier version. I watch Lugosi once or twice a year.
And this version and Mr. Lagella's (1979) version are the ones I watch the most.
I think lugosi added sexuality to the concept of vampirism -dracula in the book was supposed to be ugly -repulsive, lugosi was seductive and hypnotic. If it wasn't for him we wouldn't have had the later versions. And I think he himself commented on the dillemma of eternal life with his "there are far worse things that await man than death"
@trapadoored Well I have respect for the 1931 Lugosi version. I don't know if you saw the 1979 Langella/Olivier version. But Langella makes him more of a tragic figure. I also like how Langella didn't use blood or fangs. He makes Dracula look quite normal. The kind of guy you wouldn't think twice about sitting down and having a drink with.
(All the more frightening when he does the murders.) If you haven't seen it, you should.
@eternalhalloween1 I'm sure Langella's Dracula is better than his skeletor performance -(that's all I've really seen him in) -although from what I remember there is no blood or fangs shown in the 31 dracula either. In a related note, isn't there a dracula where he's played by Jack Palance? Never seen it but I saw a clip from it on Buffy the Vampire slayer back in the day- it looks like it would be hilarious.
@trapadoored Actually, I didn't think FL was so bad as Skeletor. Many people say he brought the most energy to that film. // In an interview, FL said that he didn't want to imitate Bela Lugosi. FL made him more tragic, and also made him more charming. (You wouldn't mind having a drink with him.)
Sir Lurence Olivier is Abraham Van Helsing and Donald Pleasence (from Halloween) is Dr. Seward.
Can't say I saw Palance or Buffy.
If I see the F moive you spoke of, I will watch it. .
@eternalhalloween1 Cushing in Frankenstein is not like Cushing in Star Wars. Grand Moff Tarkin was just a military figurehead guy. Nothing special-although he fares much better than Christpher Lee did as Count Dooku in the later bad Star Wars movies. (lucas is obviously a hammer fanatic) Cushing as frankenstein on the other hand is brilliant devious and gets to screw all the hot babes and use them. It's easily the most vilanous and coolest frankenstein portrayal ever.
"Satanic Rites" is a great Hammer flick, I'm hoping someone puts out a decent uncut DVD of this sometime in the not too distant future.Apparently the black magic rituals seen in the film (where a naked girl is sacrificed) are a favourite amongst REAL Satanists.
@MonkeySpank100 - I agree with you; it is the worst Dracula Christopher Lee was in. I rented this one a couple weeks ago. The more I watched it, the worse it got.
@vShaede Surely the worst Dracula with Christopher Lee (and also the worst Hammer Dracula film out of them all!) has to be Dracula AD 1972? It is in my opinion anyway. Still enjoyable though, plus the lead role Johnny Alucard looks like Jez from Peep Show!
@eljefekief - "Taste the Blood of Dracula" was really good, too. I think I have that DVD. (It was packed away when we moved back in August) - I love vamp films.
Did you ever see "CLIFFHANGERS: The Curse of Dracula"? It was a TV series back in 1979. I saw it in 86. Michael Nouri played Dracula. - It was pretty good after the first couple of episodes.

Chris Lee looks like he needs a drink -- of Aqua Vita -- and a cigar. "I don't get enough for doing this crap," he sighs.

@eljefekief - Oh yeah, you're right! I forgot about D.AD. (I probably wanted to put it out of my mind) LOL! Thanks for reminding me.
I think "The Horror of Dracula" is the best out of all of them. Well, my favorite, at least. =)
