Well while I agree a lot with bronxborn I also have to say Jay-Z's lyricism is argueably the best too. My thing is anybody can make dope rhyme with eminems styles if you noticed back in the day while he had nice wordplay it was typically the same flow and he just inserted a lot more of the same rhyming words in a bar than most rappers would at that time therefore making it seem as if he rhymed harder but really the quantity of words was more but the quality of words was lacking.

It was the Annie sample on Hard Knock Life and Can I Get A...wit Ja Rule & Amil. That album took him off. Rocafella wasn't the top label. Nas shined off his debut album. They called him king and the 2nd coming of Rakim. He blew while Biggie and 2pac were still breathing. Far as Jay, it took for Biggie and Pac to die for Jay to blow up. The masses weren't hollering Jay-Z until he came out with Hard Knock Life, his 3rd ALBUM. What he wanted, the notoriety of being the best, Nas already had years previously. Jay knew in order to be the true top dog, he had to get rid of Nas. But that shit blew up in his face.

Hip Hop is Dead and Untitled were good albums but not on the same level. I still think in the end, Jay did win the war. If you ask around as of right now, more people would know of Jay than Nas. "I gave you life when people were forgetting you Emcee'd" Jay was getting notice though. Brooklyn's Finest with Biggie was one of the toughest tracks out at that time
