@pro77ful Mullet can be very shy of anything they are unsure of so a stealthy approach is best for getting around this problem. Also on a more posative note they can go like steam trains and are very good sport on light tackle. They are a true test of all your angling skills. Hope this helps thanks for your comment.
@pro77ful The number of boats is not the reason that mullet will go to an area but more the area its self. Marinas are usually situated in sheltered bays or esturies which is perfect habitat for mullet. The number of people around at any time may have more impact on the number of fish you see.
Here in Florida we bait them with chicken feed and use size 12 or 14 hooks baited with tiny pieces of white plastic worm. Wet the layin mash just enough to make a ball in your hand. Throw the layin mash ball in the area your fishing and then cast your hooks into the same spot.
I never see the need for treble hooks with mullet fishing or multi hook set ups. Mullet are fussy feeders so by nature they will take things into there mouths to taste weather or not it is food. I release all of my fish so prefer to use just a single hook to mimimise damage. Like I think I have mentioned as long as you completely bury the hook so they cant see or feel it this works ok. Thanks for your comment its good to hear other peoples methods also.
there are two choices you can have a long line of hooks and roll them all up in a bread mash, or you can have a small three headed hook with enough bread just enough to hide the metal hook but no more personally the second reconmadation has worked best for me but never the less i have used the first tecnique n got a few bites
Interesting you should say that because we've been going the other way with smaller baits and hooks. What we were finding with larger baits was that they were just pushing it along the surface without sucking it in.
Yeah I was finding that with the smaller fish, however it usually draws the attention of the bigger fish. This fish is about the average size that I hook and I have had the odd bigger fish too. I cant wait for may/june to come around again going to try useing light braid this year to try and improve hook ups.
Hi texxs The mullet here are pretty niave but probably just as wary as any others. I think the key elements are using ultra light tackle 3lb mainline and a florocarbon tippet of around 3ft, very small hooks size 8. Because I use light tackle they seem almost obliviouse and the bait! good old bread crust with the hook completely covered. The rod and reel are also important as useing light gear you need a rod with a very progressive action and a reel with a silky drag as these fish can really move
They arn't the easiest fish to catch for sure but worth the effort if you like a challenge.
They will have even the most patient angler chewing his hat as the time it takes them to eject a bait takes half the time it takes to blink but when hooked in shallow water its like a rocket going horizontal. A fish thats deserves the upmost respect and a stunning fish to look at also.
man, i go mullet fishing in the river and catch 5lb to 10lb mullet,i caught a good 7 lber the other day.

Has to be thick sliced or better still an uncut loaf. The hook needs to be well hidden so I use a large bait. This tends to sort out better fish too.

Roll on summer.

Nice fish mate. Kingsmill or Hovis? Thick sliced or medium?

In all my years fishing, I've never seen nor heard of a mullret taking a bait of any kind.
How did YOU do it?

peter it was about 5mins or so being that I use a very soft rod after there first couple of runs the rod usually stops them.
