  • cello piccolo?..ok--so its five strings??.what r the tunings? and couldnt this be played on a standard cello??..i played this on classical guitar and i am learning it on the standard cello...i did see someone play this perfectly ona standard cello at U of T. we were sitting in the lounge and this guy played the whole piece perfectly..it was unreal...

  • @PRODIGYat43

Typically, the tuning for the 5 string cello piccolo is C2-G2-D3-A3-E4 (scientific pitch notation). The original piece for violin ranges between G#3 and E6. Bylsma played it an octave lower here (G#2 to E5, like you probably can do using your standard cello C2-G2-D3-A3 tuning).

Since the standard tuning for violin is G3-D4-A4-E5, baroque cello players often used 4 string cello piccolos tuned G2-D3-A3-E4 with or instead of C2-G2-D3-A3 tuned cellos. Nevertheless, a cello can be used.

  • @The30YearOldVirgin hey thanks for the info...thumbs up! i had this recording before i played the cello...Bylsma is quite the player...

  • Weird that it's in Eb...

  • @guitarguru186 he is playing one half step lower (A =415 hz)

  • This movement is incredible on the cello piccolo! Bach's music is so versatile, but it doesn't withstand the test of modern instruments: his melodies become stifled by the very focused tone of metal strings which are perfect for Brahms, but for such a piece as this they are overwhelming next to the breadth of tone allowed for by gut. Thank you for posting this arrangement!

  • Excelent!

  • cello's fucking rule

  • this is a cello, not a violin, don´t you see the grave sound at the end of each note?

  • @australianjob

I know it is a cello. In fact, it is a five-string cello piccolo.

The reason why there are so many pictures of violins in this video is because Bach originally wrote this piece for violin and I thought it would be wise to remember it. I know this is a cello.

For everybody here claiming that this is a viola or a violin or anything else, please do an Internet search for "Anner Bylsma Baroque Esprit" at. arkivmusic(dot)com.

You will quickly confirm that this is a cello piccolo.

  • @The30YearOldVirgin I always thought that bach wrote this for lute

  • @bilhernia

The Partita No. 3 in E Major (BWV 1006) was originally composed for Solo Violin.

You are probably thinking about BWV 1006a, which is a transcription for Solo Lute of BWV 1006 made by Bach himself.

Unfortunately, most people who upload videos containing BWV 1006a often omit the "a" after the 1006. So this causes some confusion.

On a side note, this Prelude was also transcribed by Bach for solo organ, oboes, trumpets and strings in the opening sinfonia of the cantata BWV 29.

  • @The30YearOldVirgin This is an excerpt from the recording by Anner Bylsma" playing Bach's pieces on a Violoncello Piccolo. He plays BWV 1006, BWV 1013 and BWV 1003. The original CD was issued by Harmonia Mundi in 1989.

  • @VERITS99

I know, I actually own a 2002 reissue from Deutsche Harmonia Mundi (that's the reason why this video has been blocked in Germany). BWV 1003 and 1006 were originally composed for violin and BWV 1013 for flute.

  • @The30YearOldVirgin Actually it was originally written for organ.

  • @lemonyfreshforme

As far as I know, there are only two arrangements of this prelude for organ. One was used in the cantata "Gott, man lobet dich in der Stille", BWV 120 (from 1728) and the other in "Wir danken dir, Gott, wir danken dir", BWV 29 (1731).

Since this prelude was concluded in 1720, I honestly can't see how this piece could have been originally written for organ.

Is there any other organ piece that I'm not aware of? If so, please indicate its BWV reference number.

  • cello* in the nosebleed section :)

  • this is what you call violin shredding ..haha ..awesome

  • @freaker126 Big guitar shredding!. haha

  • Forgive me if I sound perverted or anything like that, but at 2:45, is that an image of a violin neck over a.... boob? Or is it something else?

  • @Thatfloydrose42guy No, is what you say and I guess it's great!

  • D: this is not violin

  • @CANmoPants It's a viola. :) Or it could be a violin with really thick wood for the body. But It's probably a viola. XD

  • who is playing here ?

  • @Pikangu Anner Bylsma!

  • LOVE this peace and playing it.

  • love the sound but SOOOOOOO FAAAAAAAAAST.

  • @The30YearOldVirgin i know that, but in this recording, its played on cello. either way, i was messing around. no worries.

    xD

still a picture of a cello wouldnt hurt.

  • Thanksss, I really wanted to listen to it in cello. Who's the interpreter???. Since I watched August Rush I fell in love with this song in cello.

  • Beautiful. Love the pictures too.

  • oh....my....goodness....

  • mmm... a little mistake.... Bach isn't "1685 - 1750", he's "1685 - Forever"

  • oh my gosh. i melted into the desk when it began. that rich, deep opening note made me eyes widen, 1/2 way through the piece i realized i was laying with my head down on the desk, my eyes in a trance staring at the screen..... such beautiful playing

  • Why is it I'm a violinist and I wish SOOOO many violin recordings that I've heard of this piece do the same things with it that this cellist is doing right here!?

  • i love the sound of violin. but not they play. anyways its awesome.

  • piccolo cello.... NOT violin..... whats with all the pictures of violins? HELLO?!?!? as a cellist, i am offended..... hmph.

  • @TMSVioloncellist please.. your offended lol its a mistake that the guy made, get a life

  • @lonestar2779 oh hush yourself.

it was a joke. why dont YOU get a life?

  • @TMSVioloncellist Get over yourself.

  • @xplund I could say the same. but i wont. i'll say get a life.

  • @TMSVioloncellist Wow, that really cuts deep:-(

  • impressive ultimo

  • crap it's cello!! where is violin?

  • i love this.

  • Why is it so low?

  • who is this playing?? is this Anner Bylsma on the piccolo cello? he is the only one i know who recorded this piece on cello

    ????

  • @porpoisefathom pretty sure it is...I don't think anyone else has recorded this on a piccolo cello

  • OMFG

  • this song is flat...either that or it was transposed into e flat major O__o

  • @wenzhiquan Hi Rei. :)

  • this is the tuning that was used in the baroque era of music. the A back then (an A with tuning of 415 ) sounds like an A-flat now.

  • ohhh cool :O thanks for the info

  • It's in baroque pitch (A=415 Hz).

  • @wenzhiquan not all "e"s are the same. some people tune their A higher or lower than the popular standard 440Hz. in the baroque time the standard was a lot lower than that so a lot of baroque enthusiasts prefer the lower tuning

  • dig it!

    Bach was a beautiful madman.

sounds great on the cello! who's performance?

  • 3:20 THAT'S FUCKING RAY WINSTONE!!!!

  • @Ricardo72 WHAT are you talking about ?

  • He looks like the actor Ray Winstone innit!!!!!!!!!!

    Don't you think!?!?!?!?

  • 0:20 - 0:30 music from movie "It's all gone pit tong" at the end. nice :)

  • it's all 16th notes.. that's why

  • are you jocking? this is a prelude, not a corrente

  • i mean joking

  • Because life is very short.

  • do you imagine this performence played with a BOss metal-core pedal on that chello

    HOOOLYY SHHHHHHHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIITT

  • @yeahyeahyaha2 it already sounds like it has a phase shifter lmao

  • yeah me too -if you know where to get this piece..please tell me! ive seen it for guitar and violin but not cello--and what a pain in the ass having to transcribe it from the original grrrrr...ive done that before too...

  • good lord im gonna quit...play the uke or something...

  • friend and I once heard a young phenom play elventanz... she was 11, we were in our twenties.

After she played, he mumbled,"Think I'll be a plumber."

  • The whole thing is stunning: 0:00 to 3:34.

  • @pix042 you missed a second asshole :D

  • Do you mind sending the sheet music for this piece to me? I can't find it anywhere!

PM me and I'll give you my email

  • WOW! This is even faster than most violin versions I have heard of this. The cello is harder to move that fast on as well!

I give the performer a HUGE round of applause!

  • whos the performer?

  • Anner Bylsma.

  • i love 1:05-1:20 my fav part

  • Perfection!

  • This...song...is...so...ungodly...hard....anyone who can even play the first page has skillz.

  • why is it so ungodly?

  • a brutal combination of bowings, fingerings, notes, and awkward accidentals. Plus the fact that it is in E.

  • Because he Snobtech777 is not that strong of a player.

  • its sooooo fast O.o my arm would die! though...i like the august rush version better.

  • This was in august rush?

  • yes its in the beginning and it goes with break, sung by jonathan rhys meyer.

  • Who is playing? I heard a recording of Anner Bylsma play this years ago, and loved it. I love this one the same! Thanks for posting it.

  • "classical guitar is the closest to a natural sound as it was intended to be."

I cannot agree with it, because every instrument has its beauty to offer in this piece, but talking about the sound, I much prefer the guitar on this piece. And I play classical guitar

This piece is leveled at ACRT professional at Canadian Royal Conservatory of Music for classical guitar

Because guitar's each string has different color, if offers much more different to polyphonic consctruction of music

  • @ Yangmagic0703 neta que si sabes eso es lo que se tiene que decir

  • @yangmagic0703 wait so ur saying this piece is considered profressional level according to canadian royan conservatory of music? i know how to play the beginning. imma learn the rest :D

  • @asharp12 playingst the notes is only the first step, understanding the musical texture, harmonic language and phrasing and voicing are next, then to interpretation.

  • @yangmagic0703 without trying to sound like an asshole.i just meant having the ability to play it. what your saying basically takes years and years of studying theory and training. i'm a self taught guitarist. i know a decent amount of theory but not nearly enough to call myself anything close to an expert. but i consider music something a lot more deeper than theory based print on paper. music is something very valuable and personal to me as well as others. and im 17 so get off my ass. haha

  • John Williams didn't play bass notes accordingly, I guess he took ideas from violin composition

However, 1006a is the piece which the manuscript was missing, and it is without the instrument that Bach intented, but it's evident that it's either composed for the lute or harpsichord with 2 staves

  • I also like the version with cello.

Have you ever heard this piece on a steelstring guitar. This is also very impressive. Search for Pal Paulikovics if you like to listen.

  • I'm sorry, but I really prefer this on the violin. The violin's high notes just suit the song so well, I think.

    Great anyway!

  • really good! :O i want to play it that good one day.

  • Thanks for posting these great videos!

Please remember to give the performers credit in the information section.

    Thanks!

  • W*u*n*d*e*r*b*a*r!!!

  • That was magnificent! The violin is such a beautiful instrument; I am extremely fond of string.

My main instrument is the nylon guitar, fortunately and unfortunately. I am working to play this piece from the transcription to guitar as John Williams plays it (who's video you can see here on youtube as well).

Thank you for the beautiful imagery that accompanies this music!

  • yeaaahh.. too bad its not the violin playing it... I think its the cello

  • On second thought it probably isn't a violin, but a viola.

Either way it originally was a lute piece, so the classical guitar is the closest to a natural sound as it was intended to be.

  • It's a cello... a 5 stringed cello like

    anisometropie noticed. :)

The piece was originally composed for violin, but the performer (Anner Bylsma from the Netherlands) plays it on a cello :)

  • thank you for viodeo! i like this piece!

  • originally written for violin, not arranged for violin. Bylsma plays on a piccolo cello, 5-string cello ( i want to buy one as hell !!)

i play this on my cello, but i've only 4 strings, so i must play in A major instead of E major :(

  • oh okay! thank you any ways but i went to itunes and found it.

    its anner bylsma playing :D

    thanks anyways

  • do you know whos playing??

  • wow amazing
