Hi, Mahalia was saying at :28 she was telling Eddie Robinson to play "Come on children lets sing" the title of the song she is singing. He didnt realize she was coming out to perform the same song again. Hence the couple of bars he played not knowing what she was going to do. Thats Mahalia

@khalil4ulove I love all her work during those last years. She pulled herself through in great form. She tried new things yet clung to the old. Great artist!
When I watch this footage. I just cry b/c she was involved in health battles and a second divorce from her husband Sigmund Galloway. Yet in spite of all of these issues, Mahalia sings the Gospel b/c she knows "her God will never turn His Back on Her"!!!!!!
I really think Mahalia was being herself here. She could become "happy" over her music and her God. She thought enough of this song to entitle a chapter in her autobiography, "Movin' On Up" with the same song title.
Just watching her sing this song makes me smile and my heart happy. She sings with JOY and it reaches out to her audience. You can definately FEEL what she is singing about. Sing Mahalia!
LOL..there is only one thing i can say mahalia should have NEVER done, and that is hold a mic. The holy ghost would take off on her and she would take to dancing with him and forget that her audience was trying to eaves drop on her praise time. Mahalia jackson was AMAZING.
LOL, the orchestra seems lost. When the spirit hits Mahalia they start scrambling to follow her. She's in very good voice here after being ill for a while. I enjoyed it.
That lousy mic won't catch a sound if it's an inch from her mouth. The sound engeneer wasn't worth doodly squat.I feel sorry for Mahalia - to have been so great to see herself slipping but she is gracious thru it all.
i'm glad that i'm not the only one who noticed this, she practically had to have it in her mouth to have any sound. by 1967, they could have had the whole stage miked-ESPECIALLY for her!...
By slipping I am saying her health was failing. Before this performance she was off the scene for one or two years due to her health. I don't believe she was around toooo many years after this. At this same event she had to have the orchestra start a number over again, a number she had done hundreds of times. I love Mahalia and I don't like the fact she is failing in her one of a kind career.
she had them start "without a song" over because she was thanking the audience while the conductor had started the song while she was talking. He was technically in the wrong, if this is the song you are talking about.
thank you for making that observation. She asked them to start over again because she WAS thanking the people. You can tell by certain comments that people make, that they are unaware of Mahalias style. Shes a realist, and so her arts has always reflected that. If she felt starting the intro to a song again, she would. This is not indicative of her art failing as it was always her style. Mahalia would never sing a song the same way and her present mood dictated the delivery of song.
I can't say it enough. She was and is the greatest gospel singer. I'm impressed with her physical presence on stage. She once said "the audience has been my family." She meant it. She also said "there will never be another Mahalia." To date she is right.
Its so refreshing to see this....Hallelujah!!! Edward Robinson on piano..Charles Clency on organ....Mahalia in Germany ....singing her heart out.....your son..Joshua Nelson God Bless you mother!!!!

What is she saying at 0:28?
I think it sounds like 'I'm gonna play it up*
As to tell the piano-player to keep up the tempo... Amazingly sweeet!
