Great number, great band. This is not analysis of the song but Thatcher should have been 'botty bopped' to the other side of the universe. One destructive devious bitch!!!!
@sugarplumfairiie Sorry but I think you need to listen to the lyrics properly, it was about a bloke getting beaten up in the underground on his way home. The thugs took his housekey and he was scared for his wife because 'She'll think it's me' but he can't do anything because he is in a mess after being beaten up.
The Jam did have a lot of songs out against Thatcherism, but this was about travelling alone in the underground and getting beat up.
I know exactly what the song was about. But it was a reflection of Thatcher's Britain, as Weller sings in the song "Too many right winged meetings!"
Just like watching This is England 86, it's not directly about thatcher, it is about people living in Thatcher's Britain. And Weller was anti Thatcher, and the whole song is about the thuggery and fear that was allowed to exist at that time. Not much different than today.
The thing about The Jam,something that gave Weller even more vitriol, energy and pure hate in his playing style, was that they were truly outsiders in those early years..not only to the industry, but to their peers as well. There's a moment in Don Letts "Punk Rock Movie" when Ari Up of The Slits (r.i.p.Ari),on The Clash tourbus, holds up a copy of an article on The Jam in the music press, and says something derogatory to the camera."I know I come from Woking, and you say I'm a fraud" sang Weller"!
Their best song. I wonder if record reviewers were pissed by "I don't give two f*cks about your review!" They had a big feud going with the rest of the British punk scene. They kept calling Paul a Tory, which is ridiculous. Terrific group, great song, I sing it in karaoke.
@54markl the thing is weller did actually say `id vote tory` this was before the harshness of thatcher but he said it to wind up/disassociate some groups of people .
@54markl weller like most humane honest people from fairly average backgrounds certainly had no time for `maggie` or any politicians. he did later support red wedge but realised that politics are not so black and white .
I LOVE THE JAM !!!

Weller wrote Down In the Tube station at midnight against Thatcherism, and ringed winged Britain.

London 2007. 30 years after this was released. Alone, confused and angry. Studing as a mature student, this was my personal soundtrack.

@unclemort1960 He may have been a bit confused politically, but the message in his music was pristine. That's all that matters.
