  • i like how many violins they show when they talk about cellos....

  • They are beautiful, but really expensive. I got interested in them because of Brent Kutzle, a member of my fave band OneRepublic. He has one of these, and is just brilliant with it. It is a kind of an unusual thing in a band, but they make it work so well in their songs that it sounds amazing.

  • its just a show off instrument inst really going to be used to make sound or for professional work

  • was that three layers, I wonder what kind of fiber that was.

  • It has been decided. I will start playing Cello just so I can buy myself a carbon fiber Cello.

  • wow, that is fvckin gorgeous cello.

  • "Found that carbon fiber resonated nicely"

yeah.. that or you can make assloads every month and sell them as pricey as real cellos

  • Sounds nothing like a real, wooden cello. No real musician would use these. Though they're still pretty.

  • i'm not sure about this... weird

  • Wow....weird.

  • wow... they have to have a giant mold for a sticker

  • These things go for $7000 each!

I don't intend to buy one unless I try one out myself and are thrilled with the sound and feeling of it.

  • Comment removed

  • All the luthiers watching this must be so pissed hahaha

  • @psychotikpaisano Either that or thrilled. I fall into the latter camp. The only hard thing about making composites is making the mold. The rest of the work can be done in less than a day if you don't account for the time it takes the vacuum to work.

  • I just couldn't imagine that it would sound nearly as good as a wooden instrument

  • this guy's got a wicked business idea going. those things can't cost more than 1000$ to make. you're looking at under 100$ in fiber, couple hundred bucks more for parts, few hundred more for labor. sell for 8grand. noice little profit.

  • @itsumonihon

Serious? You think that is under $100 in cloth?

    Yet another Youtube expert haha

  • @tommyeflight89 ok, maybe more than 100$ but still not very expensive if bought at wholesale pricing

  • @itsumonihon

carbone fiber cost like 70$ a yard.

if you buy a 100 yard roll, it's gonna cost you around 2500$-3500$

in this project, it's WAY more than 100$ worth of cloth. i would say about 500$

  • HAHAHA "f holes"!

  • also used to make trampolines

  • corny.

  • Why don't they go all the way any make complete houses out of carbon fibre? They would probably be better suited for regions where there are hurricanes and tornadoes.

  • @Afrocanuk Because it would cost to much and it would be very cold inside the building

  • @lozthegreat1 Why can't they use insulation? ...And the ultimate cost solution: "Made In China."

  • @Afrocanuk i think there would be lots of problems like fixing it to the ground so it don't blow away insulation keeping it waterproof and more other problems maybe in a few years it will be possible

  • @Afrocanuk Because as strong as carbon fiber is, it is very BRITTLE. You don't want that in building material. When metals break, they deform. When CF breaks, it explodes into shards.

  • 8 grand for a string instrument is nothing! a well made violin usually costs around 15 grand or more!

  • F holes LMAO

  • i am a fiber engineering student .... most composites are cured under a vacum at around 350 degrees F .... the reason they are so expensive is because carbon fiber costs about $25/lb. and the process is labor intensive and takes has alot of fixed costs

  • @freezackman what type of engineering in particular are u in btw? just wondering

  • @TruAzn100 polymer and fiber engineering, it deals with any thing from composites to kevlar to polypropelene

  • @freezackman polmer and fiber, deals with anything from carbon fiber to kevlar to polypropelene

  • It's really age Zero of carbon making, I'm pretty that can be improved a LOT... that said when I say how it's made... I find those instruments way overpriced !!

  • i luv carbon fiber i wonder if we can make close out of carbon

  • Do somebody know on what temperature do they bake it? :D

  • This ruins the guitar smash... or in this case Cello smash.

  • at least if someone hates your playing you can beat the ever living shit out them without worry of damaging your instrument xD

  • who cares if it sounds like shit, IT LOOKS AMAZING!!

  • i wonder is you could make a electric bass with carbon fiber?

  • @Jose04811 Of course you could.

  • @alexanderblake then I am off to the carbon fiber store!

  • 3:41, "these F-holes" lol

  • @OurenV2 Almost all pro flautists believe that silver sounds best. Almost every single one will tell you exactly what you have told me about their own instrument: and they would all be wrong. Cello necks are under extreme stress from the strings, that alone rules out plastic. You show me a double-blind study that compares carbon fiber to wood, and I will buy your comment. Until then I will keep the opinion that these things sound good even in this low qual video

  • That's what they mean when they say that I am an f-hole!!! :-)

  • why is carbon fibre checkered?

  • @shababsta

Carbonfibre isnt really checkered its just the way its woven. typically for aesthetic peices they use a 4x1 weave known as a "twill" weave and the way the strands bend over the other strands makes the light reflect off of the fibers different ways, giving it a 'Checkered' Look.

  • I'd like to make an instrument with A-shaped holes. so a lot of noise would be coming from the A-holes!

  • hahahah how low-quality do u think this thing is if they have a mold made from cardboard...

  • LOL hahaha 3:40 F-holes

  • @perro123123 yup, and you sometimes find white stuff in there, lmao

  • @perro123123 haha i play cello myself and today in my orchestra class my teacher said this to one of our bass players, "hey jessica, your F-holes need to face this way so i can hear you better" i was laughing so hard!!

  • @perro123123

    er... yeah?

  • @perro123123 Yeah, I'm glad they don't use a-holes, as they sound really bad...

  • @creep426, to be honest the last time I made that joke was in 4th grade when I started playing stringed instruments.

  • :/ they sound a little harsher than a beautiful wooden instrument.

  • Lets play with glue and pretend your clever

  • My ass

  • most aircrafts today are made from carbon fiber not steel

cars, maglev trains and even the boeing 787

  • Does anyone know how many layers they use for the top?

  • Now thats interesting:) Science:)

  • I have one of these cellos and and they are amazing. If any of you need a cello condsider this one.

  • I'd love to cover one of my bedroom walls with carbon fiber, make a beautiful feature wall.

  • lol can you imagine a whole house made of carbon fiber?

  • lol.....i didnt know that carbonfiber was in big rolls...my bedroom curtans are gona be those rolls

  • go to YOUCARBONFIBER website

  • If carbon fiver it's so much resistant than steel, how could they cut off the residual edges after the cure happens?????????

  • Carbon fiber strength comes from the density of nano carbon structure combined with plastic resin or other cohesive materials. So even if the entire CF sheet goes through the same cooking process, without the proper application of resin, CF is as weak as your washroom carpet.

  • Is the carbon fiber sheet not altewrated during the curing process??? No chemical reaction????

It's dificult to believe that a simple epocxi resing with a maleable material in layer, would get so strong without any chemical reaction to alter the carbon fiber..

  • Why some tutorial, about working with carbon fiber, no not use any stove, but just epoxi resin applied oven the carbon sheets?

Is the oven not obligatorily necessary, or it's just a option to make a more even resistant final product?

  • Think of it like reinforced concrete. Super thin carbon strings are steel cables or robs with that keep the building more resistence to tension and stress. Resin is like concrete that makes the building hard and tough. Only both work together can give Carbon fiber strength to rival steel. Yet, Carbon fiber cannot resist penetration and cutting as well as metal because individual carbon fiber is still essentially a fiber.

  • @jerryaltman are you special??

  • Uhhn ??? What do you mean about special?

My english it's not perfect cause I'm not american or english, so it's my second idiom

  • @jerryaltman

    you "second idiom"??

    Who talks like that??

    : /

  • I still do not know what you mean in your original question.

  • @jerryaltman

    Dude, fuck off !!

    BI

  • You should have more education.

  • @jerryaltman

    you first!

  • It cuts really easy. You can use a fine tooth saw or small grinding wheel. It's very strong, but you can still cut it :)

  • ...Tony Hirst is back to get us... ]:}

  • what different between like carbon fiber and metal?

  • its like the difference between wood and plastic...they're completely different materials.

  • nice carbon fiber cello..this is kinda how they make carbon fiber hoods and trunks..ah i love CF

  • I need one of those :'( ...

  • amazing!

  • Hmm... would be interesting to have another acoustic guitar, with carbon upgrade!

  • donno, but would be loud for acoustic shows

  • its called an ovation guitar lol...

    they are relatively cheap...

  • i love carbon fiber!

  • why??

  • it's place in musical tone and it's strength...not to mention uses

  • but whats nouloso's reason

  • because it's stronger than steel by awhole lot and a whole lot light and plus it looks truly beautiful to be honest

  • Darn, I saw half the title and thought it was carbon fiber cellophane wrap...

  • My mothers boyfriend was a Master Violin builder. (one of 4 in my country).

I think they made the instruments and kept listening to every piece of wood they crafted.

This looks more like assembly. How do they know if it sounds good?

  • a musician's ears are tuned to the sound of the instument they play...for example... i have picked out the sound of my ten guitars out of thirty different ones by listening (they also have my name, Alex Nuchiha, engraved on the back so we were sure they were mine)

  • yeah, but I'm describing how this process doesn't involve listening from time to time.

  • im diggin the music

  • f-hole...ahah!

  • Very nice, but them f-holes look like s-holes to me.

  • lmao

  • :O

    1:47 theres a bubble

  • are you retarded?

  • no he's just right

  • It looks terrible.

  • Please take a closer look at the video's title.

(If you couldn't figure out my point, it's that the cello isn't done yet.)

  • these cellos sound absolutely horrible...

  • And what do you know about a carbon fiber cello compared to the professionals that clearly stated it?

  • $8,000 dollars for the cello.

  • 8,000 dollars isnt even a lot for an instrument. and carbon fiber instruments sound awful.

  • @OurenV2 If Yo Yo Ma says it's a great instrument I wouldn't say it sounds awful lol.

  • @OurenV2 Material is not relevant to the sound of a flute (this was proven scientifically). It's probably not relevant here either.

  • @pauldangerkile because, fluts and wooden string instruments work exactly the same right? also, thats like saying the type of wood used in a violin doesnt effect the sound... it's sound, vibrations, different materials resonate and vibrate differently. capiche? i'd like to see the study where you saw this, because you dont need to make graphs to understand that different things have different densities and create sound differently. why aren't cellos made out of cheap plastic to cut down price?

  • @OurenV2 Apparently I don't know how to use YouTube. I apologize if you get multiple replies.

  • @OurenV2 it actually doesn't. Brent Kutzle (the guy from One Republic) plays one.

  • @OurenV2 I've actually heard some that sounded incredible. It depends on how they are made and what company. I have a wood one that I love and have had for 10 years, but one of my friends just got a carbon fiber one, and with the right strings it sounds just as good or better. With the wrong strings it sounds like crap though.

  • @OurenV2 -u mean 8000 U.S? my that cost a lot! unless u're rich.

  • "F holes" lol

  • lol yeah, that's funny.

  • Why would you want some fancy-shmancy fibers over traditional wood?

    (serious question)

  • The video stated @ 0:15 that it carbon fiber sounds the same only louder. Werent you watching the video? I guess as a musician your use to ppl listening to you but your not use to listening to ppl.

Besides I dont know about carbon fiber, but I know wood is not a renewable material. Could that also be a reason for fiber over wood? Yes, plz kill the earth some more so you can play your music. Thank You. (SERIOUSLY)

  • I am used to listening to ppl I'm only 14! HELLO!! I constantly volunteer for charity and school things to help out and I teach flutists and basic music. SO therefore I'm enjoy listening to people (pretty much my job) And instrument's wood has to be approved by the EPA befor they are made so we are not "killing" anything and besides there's a law that states that for every tree that is cut 4 must planted to replace so they actuall save the planet in the pprocess in making the instruments.

  • Comment removed

  • boobtube, obviously you know nothing about music. Fiber carbon instruments are not like wood ones. NOT AT ALL! So please don't talk if you have no idea.

And just for you to know, with one single tree you can make tons of violins and a few cellos, so I really don't think musicians are the cause of global warming.

  • How is wood not a renewable resource??? You can plant trees and make more wood.

  • I've been using a carbon fiber acoustic guitar for years. If you're a performing musician, you understand that not all gigs are performed in humidity controlled environments. If you travel from Florida to Alaska and play gigs along the way, then you're exposing a wooden instrument to extreme changes in humidity and temperature. Carbon Fiber instruments are impervious to this. They do have their own sound, but no matter where the gig is, they will always sound the same, and play the same.

  • That's pretty much the same way they make a formula 1 race car.

  • it's Luis Leguia playing at the beginning!

  • Thanks for posting this - I was very interested in how these are made.

  • doas anyone know what kind of wax is used to keep the epoxy from sticking to the mold?

  • It's called a Release Agent. You can buy it anywhere you get the CF and the resin from. It's a common item

    Greetings from iran

  • :42 subliminal message ????

  • also another one at around 2:31 lol i don't know what it is tho.

  • I kind of want a cigarette.

  • i want that cello!!!! or any fullsize cello!! but they are so expensive!

  • Sorry, but excuse me while I laugh at your stupidness.

  • @squeakylion its stupidity not stupidness

  • this guy annoys me

  • are these less expensive than a wood cello?

  • way way way more expensive

  • they are usually more expensive but are cheaper than multi-million dollar strads, montagnanas, guarneris etc.

  • carbon fiber is beautiful

  • I have one, and it weighs about 2/3 the weight of a wooden cello, I'd say. I'm extremely talentless on the cello (new student), but when I can manage to hit the right notes, the thing sounds pretty cool.

  • holy crap, i had no idea they made these things out of carbon fiber :D i would love to hear how a CF string-bass sounds

i wonder how much that weighs compared to a wooden cello

  • Go to the luis and clark website (google luis and clark carbon fiber) and check out their site, they do make the bass and it is a beast, there is a recording of it on youtube and also on their website.

  • won´t the nylon stick to the epoxy? and why do the put on nylon?

  • The nylon sticks a little bit but you can peel it off. They use a nylon sheet to absorb a little epoxy and to leave the carbon fiber/epoxy with good finish. It also helps with even distribution of the pressure so the epoxy gets vacuumed out evenly.

  • no wonder it's so expensive XD

  • maybe, but you'd spend your whole life trying to get a wooden instrument with a more bigger and still very beautiful sound for the same price. (and one that won't chip, crack, warp, or be effected by environment conditions in any way)

  • good point...the carbon fiber cello is also bullet proof xD.

  • nice

  • lol f-holes

  • real masterpiece

  • Wonder what a carbon acoustic guitar would be like

  • Rainsong and Composite Acoustics make carbon fiber guitars >.>

  • I just played a Composite Acoustic today. It was just parlor-sized, but it was louder than most dreadnoghts I've heard.

  • Dreadnoughts. I meant dreadnoughts.

  • they sound pretty good, don't they?

  • I prefer the Stradivarius mold.

  • carbon fiber = sex

  • I found this vid to be very informative and helpful, thanks for posting! I'm a pro violist, and just bought a L&C Carbon Fiber Viola a few weeks ago. It's great! It's diff. than wood for sure, but it sounds great, is loud, easy to play, tough as nails, and looks cool as hell under stage lights. *Most* of my collegues are surprised and impressed. For all those that are bashing it, it's really all about the player, not the instrument, regardless of what it's made of. My 2 cents...

  • how much are those?

  • Over $7000

  • I'm buying one of them soon =D.

  • i wonder if they have violins made of carbon fiber

  • thay sure do

  • they now produce violins, violas, cellos and basses.

I've heard that the bass is unbelievable. I've played the vioin and it's awesome, and I've seen the cello in action several times from colleauges who adore it. It's a winner for sure

  • ty u helped me with my music hwk!

  • omg, i wish i had one of these, i don't have a cello of my own!

  • $7000
