why do people play with so much distortion? It doesn't sound good. You can listen to the HEAVIEST metal and find that they really don't use shitloads of distortion. This solo really seems like a bunch of riffs incoherently thrown together. Music is a language; it is made up of phrases, dynamics, notes that mean something, not a bunch of crap thrown together because it sounds cool. You don't speak by throwing together all the biggest words you can think of; it wouldn't make sense. Samw with music

It's called a "pitch harmonic bend." There are a lot of youtube videos on it, but it is done by quickly and lightly hitting the string with your thumb after striking the string with your pick. It takes a little practice, but it sounds great with solos or in riffs.
