  • She seems to be on the edge of tears every fucking scene

  • why she still hasn't been nominated for an emmy is way beyond me. she's brilliant.

  • Call me sentimental, but I seriously can't watch this clip. It'd be one thing if it was some okay-performing actress making me go: "Awww, that's sad," but this just... Touches you in such a deep spot, it's almost too much. Jennifer Carpenter is a goddess.

  • "My sister doesn't deserve to be in this kind of pain.."

Such a powerful statement. You can see that dexter can truly feel what Deb is feeling.

  • @BlessedSpirit Dexter can't feel Deb's feelings because like he said, he has no feelings, but he sees it.

  • im so glad im not the only one who felt the power of this scene.

  • "It doesn't matter what I do or what I choose. I'm what's wrong."

That's what dexter says in season 4's finale. Just realised.

  • @theteacher010 Yup, a beautiful touch indeed.

  • This seen made me feel extreme sympathy for deb. Both deb and dex live such tragic lives...

  • @CeresLegend tell that to the kids starving in africa

  • It makes me so sad that she is this good- because that's not acting, that's real. And that means she has been through something awful and was re-living it to do this scene. Watching her is like accidentally walking in on someone grieving- I feel almost guilty for seeing her in real-life pain :(

  • Its funny how some people think her acting here was too dramatic. It wasnt too dramatic at all. Think about it, she was in so much pain mentally and physically. She was shot and lost the person she loved. And I know i cant be the only one who has cried to the point where it was hard to breathe. Her acting here is so realistic, its incredible. Jennier is so underrated, she deserves to be more noticed.

  • wasn't it 2010 she and michael c hall got divorced? I'll wager she was channeling a lot of that emotion here

  • When I saw this I was overcome with sadness for Debra Morgan and admiration for Jennifer Carpenter. She captures the uncontrollable weeping so perfectly that it struck a few cords with me.

  • I hope you all caught that this is the same line Dexter says at the end of the season when he finds his wife murdered...

  • i love this scene...i'm not surprised that someone posted this video

  • DAMN SHE IS AMAZING I CRIED WITH THAT!

  • I just realized her dialogue at 1:34 is what Dexter says when he finds Rita in the season finale!

  • The acting + soundtrack alone make Dexter the best show ever. All the stuff around it just makes it perfect.

  • wow i cried again just watching this in youtube.

  • never noticed this before, but Dexter's monologue after Rita's death is almost the same as this. "It doesn't matter what I do, or what I choose. I'm what's wrong." Such a powerful performance.

  • just cried.

  • I want to feel some sympathy for Deb...but just like what I've done, the choices you make, you're gonna have to live with it...she chose Lundy and look what happened when she cheated on Anton...it was her decision...and I've had mine too. I feel her pain but I just wouldn't like her or sympathize with her in real life in any way. It's just her character, I don't know...I'm more in tune with Dexter. The show's not called Debra.

  • @coldstaind91

    i agreed

  • oh Jen, sooo underrated.

  • She's gonna die when she finds out who Dexter is or she's gonna put a bullet in his head.

  • jeez i cried like a baby after Lundy died. He was so cool. Great preformance

  • i was just waiting for that hug. when it finally happened, i already knew what she was gonna do. i sobbbbbedddd like a baaabbyyy

  • fricking love her acting. everyone chews her character but how can i hate her when the acting is so perfect and real like this?

  • Why the fuck does Carpenter not have an Emmy or Golden Globe for this? This scene was perfect. The way she acted was so perfect and real. And I fucking hated that Lundy died. He and Deb would have made a great couple. Quinn is just too serious and lacks any emotion.

  • @Biddybalboa I can see why you think that. I will admit I did too think she was kind of a slutty bitch for the first 2 seasons, because I thought all she wanted to do was just get laid all the time and just beng selfish. But I think Season 3 really started to improve on her character. She does become a little stronger and we see just how caring and conflicted she is. She acts tough to try to take down any criminal while at the same time caring for Dexter and her colleagues.

  • JC is amazing in Dexter and gets better every season.

  • dex is such a clueless but good intentioned brother. that's what we call the ugly cry. real, genuine tears of pain.

  • i am confused as to why julia stiles (horrible, stiff, unrealistic actress) was nominated for an emmy AND a golden globe and this woman has not been

  • Whoa. I never watched many episodes of Dexter and thought Jennifer Carpenter was an okay actress at best. However, I was somewhat moved by her performance in this scene. She did a great job.

  • Great actor...

I've cried in real life and it looked faker than this...

  • She's never been nominated for a Golden Globe because... ?

  • @ROFLitsChristian OMG. I KNOW!

  • She is amazing.

  • I saw this and what like damn shes good and went to youtube and looked up this vid to see the comments about how good she was in this scene. lol

  • Yep. Real crying. She's got it down quite well. I'm watching Season 5.

  • Holy Shit. @ 1:58, possibly in an attempt to actually console Deb, Dexter tells her who/what he is. "No you're not [broken]. I AM." This is just an all-around moving scene.

  • oh this scene, when i saw it i literally thought "holy crap that is GREAT acting"

  • i cried like that when my girlfriend said she was pregnant

  • @rhadoolinho Lmao

  • @rhadoolinho outstanding performance to your girlfriend lucky her. not you! hahaha Lol :)

  • I mean, this scene right here is gold. Jennifer shows such a raw and realistic emotion of what pain really feels like. It hardly feels like acting.

  • This tore me to pieces when I saw this part the first time :''( Such an awfully great season..

  • "It doesn't matter what I do, what I chose. I'm what's wrong." :(

  • she's brilliant! this scene made me cry. but i didn't when i saw the german dub version

  • OOOOOH MY GOSH!!!!! i just caught that! dexter gives the same monologue at the end of the season!!! OMG!!!!

  • Hiccuping, Spluttering, Gasping for breath, Frustration.....Now Thats a real crying scene... Visceral as fuck....

  • 2:31 crazy!

  • 2:31

  • jennifer carpenter is one hell of an actress

    like this if u agree

  • @JDtheDrunk Try losing someone so important, in such a way, and it won't even seem dramatic enough.

  • @crtdust Sorry I didn't mean this scene in particular, just Carpenter's acting in general. She overdoes it just a little too much too often.

  • @JDtheDrunk Oh yes I definitely agree on that. But the specific scene seemed great to me, maybe a few gasps too much, but realistic overall.

  • haven't you ever heard of a spoiler-warning???. title should have been "Debra Morgan cries after... (SPOILERS)"

anybody who saw the title of this video, without having already seen this episode, got spoiled. not cool.

  • Seriously SO real, so perfect. The heaving is so real and so often skipped in bad performances... This ISN'T what they teach in shitty acting classes, this is what you learn from experiencing life.

  • Lol orgasm alert... -_-

  • even my mom, who has never watched this show...was taken aback by this scene she was like "damn she is having a mental breakdown." Jennifer Carpenter should definitely win an award of some kind.

  • I hate how Lundy died. They're much better together than her and stupid Quinn.

  • Speechless

  • i still think their "romance" is retarded -_-

  • Her crying performance in this one is just as great as her crying performance in White Chicks :D

  • Give this woman an oscar already

  • SO REAL !

  • @creggerz I'm 25 year old male and this was an excellent scene for her career. Don't take that away with your petty trolling.

  • I could cry too since Lundy died. He was a very fun character. I was happy to see him return for season 4

  • i love that her tears and reactions are so real. this is how real people cry when in pain

  • This made me burst into tears, and make me want to just hug her pain away. D:

  • God. The acting in this scene is beyond powerful. It's very easy to relate to what Deb is going through due to how she portrays how she's feeling.

She had her entire world one day...just to see it destroyed and blown up before her eyes. Like any person who has lost an ex, or a husband, or a family member leave them. It's tragic...as though the entire world has collapsed...and you can't exist.

I love Dexter for this reason. The characters are all human, all very lovable with their flaws.

  • i cried...

  • A lot of actors have difficulties about doing good cry jobs, but this was outstanding! It was hard not to cry with her, it was really really good performance. And the sort of person she plays still stunns me - so tough but yet so sensitive.

  • I have loved the talent of Jennifer Carpenter long before Dexter. She's great.

  • Just one relationship after another ends for Debra. It's so sad. I watched all the seasons over the course of like a week, and I feel so bad for her. And I can even relate... with my own relationship troubles. I know just how this woman feels.

  • This is honestly, without a doubt, the best single piece of acting i have ever seen in my life. It's so ridiculously real, so raw and believable. I've watched it a dozen times and still my eyes swell with tears because it is just that good.

  • @xhotdogstandx I couldn't agree more. This three minute clip should be included in every acting class.

  • Shivers be fucked! :O

  • Fuck...I just realized that Dexter's final remarks from the final episode of Season 4 paraphrase a number of things Deb says here.

Specifically 1:33 and a little ways onward.

  • @Dragodemon000 I never noticed that until now, too. I like that.

  • I get chills everytime I watch this. This is some powerful acting, its just shows how of an amazing actress Jennifer Carpenter is.

  • This is an absolutely fantastic performance, I cried when I saw this scene, it's very powerful. And I have to disagree with those who think that the piano theme is overused, although it's sometimes being played in some scenes where it does'nt fit in my opinion. This scene is just so beautiful in it's own heartbreaking way.

  • I remember being very impressed with her performance right here as well. The only thing I don't like about this part and many others is that they keep using the same music for different scenes. Like the piano theme right here, it's overused so much for the entire series and that bothers me a lot

  • this kind of acting comes from real pain holy shit

  • I cried watching this! god damn Jennifer deserves more credit than shes given, this was amazing

  • agree this is the best from her on Dexter. actually this scene and one later where she confronts the girl in jail for the vacation murders.

  • One of the most heart- wrenching moments. So true. God, thanks for such talented people.

  • @announce84 She's one of my most favorite celebs ever so I agree, but God wouldn't condone the trashy language she has.

  • Every boyfriend of Deb ends up dead besides Anton which almost did, I think it's an amazing serie I really do but it has some moments that don't feel right

  • Everytime I hear her say "I'm broken," that's when I start welling up with tears :'[ She is SO talented, I don't understand how Jen isn't recognized when people like Angelina Jolie and Megan Fox are getting so much attention -_-

  • The first time I saw this, I immediately thought how amazing it was that she was able to act this convincingly. I didn't think other people would have even given it a second thought.

  • @SPMJ if you don't notice that is REAL crying right there

it's easy to fake cry, but if you've ever been in a situation where all you can do is cry

and not the sulky crying, the heart torn crying, then you would see just how real this moment is.

because when you REALLY cry, you don't scream, or wail loudly. you want to, but you can't. the sobs are just too strong. you can't breathe, because every time you inhale there's this painful sob blocking your airway. it's horrible, not beautiful

  • Her skill is spectacular. The best actor in the world i think.

  • I can't help crying everytime I watch this scene. Jennifer Carpenter is one of the best actresses I've ever seen

  • Yes indeed, OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE!

  • i remember the first time i watched this scene, it made me sob. literally. first, she's so beautiful. a lot of people are rude about her body, but beauty isn't defined by the size of someone's jeans. she's gorgeous. and most importantly, she did an outstanding job in this scene, not to mention the entire show. she's by far my favourite actress.

    <3 you jen.

  • Doakes shouldn't have died; Lundy shouldn't have died; Rita shouldn't have died. The writers seem to love killing off the best characters. Deb annoys me at times, but I really identified with her here. This scene is heartwrenching.

  • @lak12111 If they dint die, the show would have sucked. It's all the deaths and emotions that WE as an audience make the show good.

  • She is a very underrated actress. She really puts her best effort into all her roles. She was even awesome in Quarantine, in that she acts exactly like a naive teenager and in this she acts as a broken grown woman. She really should be recognized more.

  • Jennifer is amazing :)

  • Wow. Poor Deb! She's a tough police woman but she loved Lundy so much.

  • I love the fioreshadowing in it. Dexters last lines in S4 after finding out Rita is dead, is EXACTLY the same.

  • Oh wow, noticed it just now!!

    1:33 = last scene of season 4

  • @TheHappyKitten

Man, you´re right. That´s pretty much what Dexter says at the end of the last episode.

    Nice detail.

i cannot wait for the next episode. What the hell is going to happen?

  • Damn, she's so incredibly intense. True greatness.

  • great actress, love her and her character

  • It makes me SO mad that she is never ever nominated and people like elizabeth moss or january jones are alway nominated when I have, not even once, for a second been even half as impressed with a single line or scene that they've ever done. It shocks me that they would be nominated and Jennifer wouldn't It's ridiculous.

  • when my grandfather died I cried just like her...Im crying rigth now :`(

  • what is the artist, that debra and lundy listened too?

  • @saythanx

    Chopin

  • AH MA GAWD!!! This scene is so crazily sad!!!!!!! Jennifer C., high five on that awesomely outstanding performance!! makes me cry everytime i watch it.. ;( I miss lundy too..

    ;)

  • Deb is THE most promiscous character in Dexter ever.

  • Jesus Christ, how did she cry like that? It's so real. Like perfect. I've cried like that before where you're getting short on breath, and you feel like something is stuck in your throat. She's one of the best actors when it comes to crying

  • @Janetvdl Right? I've cried like that too in a very emotional situation that has caused me to lose my breath... How can you pull that off without anything real happening?

  • I have seen MANY crying scenes. This one actually brought a tear to my eye because it felt so REAL.

  • I dunno why but scenes like this where we see a strong character completely broken always seem to get to me. Brilliant acting by Jen Carpenter.

  • My eyes water seeing this scene.

  • lol 2:20

  • eerie-Deb had the same dialouge as Dexter did when he found Rita

  • somethinmes she can be a bit stale, but sometimes, like THIS... she is such an amazing actor, some sort of reward should be given for this and after what she did in season 1 after she was allmost killed by the ice truck killer... on the way to the hospital!

  • "It doesn't matter what I do, what I choose . . . I'm what's wrong . . ." Note that Dexter says the same thing in episode 12. Brothers and sisters truly do have a bond as deep as blood.

  • fucking scene... ugh

i watched it tonight for the first time. was afraid she was gonna go overboard with the acting, until i realized i was getting choked up too :(((((

  • WHY WAS SHE NOT NOMINATED FOR AN EMMY?! BULLSHIT

  • @crownofthevalley she totally reminded me of her role in exorcism of emily rose.

  • Amazing, breaks my heart everytime I see it

  • She's PERFECT <3

  • She is my favourite actress and I doubt anyone can take her place.

  • I could be majorly reading into this (and as an English major, I tend to do that) but I think that Michael C. Hall was diagnosed with Hodgkins somewhere in the filming of this season. It makes me wonder, at certain points in the dialogue, if the secret of his illness was fueling the sadness of this scene. Like when Debra says, "I'm broken." And Dex replies, "No. I am."

  • @RevolutionaryTea I think its like a window into Dexter's developing "feelings", like Debra says how she respects him and longs to have a life like that (loving wife, kids), while Dexter lets his guard down for a second replying "No, you are the one with the kindness of heart, I wish I was more like you". But who knows, thats what I read.

Anyway, heartbreaking scene and outstanding series

  • wow. the whole chocking/supressed crying thing is just unbelievable

  • My sister doesnt seserve to be in this type of pain...but I know who does!

  • very good actress..

  • some of those lines were from dexters speech at the end of season 4?

  • Those are really small parking spaces.

Oh, and Jennifer's a great actress, too.

  • i remember the first time i saw this part i almost couldnt watch it cuz she was so convincing, and made me feel for her =( she really is an awesome actress

  • what a brilliant scene and amazing acting by Jennifer!

  • She truly is a great actress!

  • I was here on Sunday! The Marina Del Rey Hotel. This was also the hotel room where the Ice truck killer poured blood all over a hotel room. Right across the way was the Miami Metro Police station. It was fucking awesome.

  • amazing , powerful acting and guess what ?only a " few" people will see it

seems a shame that around only 2.5 MM watched the season 4 finale and there only 2800 views here... I don't this level of acting ANYWHERE else on regular tv

Hall is letting her shine -it's her scene

  • @knewly40 dexter is not really a youtube program, which i think is a good/bad thing. depends
