@befair1000 What a great movie - Mitchum was fantastic in that as the con artist criminal preacher. And who could forget Shelley Winters, very young, playing the vulnerable widow with 2 small children. I believe that was Charles Laughton's one and only time he directed a film.
Mitchum sets the record for the largest number of bewildering fake voices of any of the celebrities I've seen in these old "What's My Line" clips. I wonder how long it would've taken someone to guess who he was if they'd just kept going.
What's with his eyes?! Those don't look like bags--they look like shiners. But shiners aren't UNDER the eyes. Regardless, it has to be the worst make-up job in Hollywood history. They had to have had something to make those less obvious. It's almost like they deliberately accentuated them. I've never seen such prominent bags under a person's eyes in my life!
@geroguy0472 that's just how he looks. He even had the nickname "Ol Rumple eyes". It's been attributed to the fact that he was a boxer and suffered from insomnia his whole life. But yeah he's always had very prominent bags under his eyes even when he was very young.
He even joked about how people would comment on his Lizzard eyes and anteater nose. (his unique nose has also been attributed to being broken durring boxing, though I think it's mostly genetics)
Have you heard Robert Mitchum sing? He's quite marvelous. He sung "Ballad of Thunder Road" which you can see here on YouTube. He sings in many of his own films and his singing voice is quite recognizable, like his speaking voice, so you can tell it's him. Nobody could be like Mitchum nowadays. Hollywood is too sanitized and full of plastic pretty boys. Mitchum was such an understated player. I saw "The Sundowners" recently which he did with Deborah Kerr, his best leading lady. Great Performances
Tough guy Robert Mitchum affecting a poofy upper-crust English accent with undercurrents of ironic humor: I ask you -- what's not to love?
Representative John Lindsay, Congressman for Manhattan's silk stocking district, actually played the game a number of times. If WML ever gets resurrected on live TV, I wonder who in Congress will have the courage to walk the WML tightrope?
I really liked him in the original "Cape Fear". He played the bad guy, the same part that Robert DeNiro played in the later version.

March 1965 -- Dorothy Kilgallen broke her collarbone when she slipped on a throw rug. She missed one broadcast, then returned to this broadcast.
( 1:10 ) DK came wearing something that looked like pajamas top with a blanket wrapped around her in a sling.
She returned to activity too early, suffered complications, returned to hospital and missed a month of taping and broadcasts.
( 1:53 ) Back in 1957, Dorothy asked Sophie Tucker the same question and also received audience guffaws.

I absolutely agree. But Mitchum had many talents which people don't know of regarding literature and art ect..
He completely bamboozled the panel and being such an established big star the denouement was funny.
