  • Contratenor

  • He has a beautiful head voice/falsetto, it almost sounds like the modal voice of a light counter tenor/coloratura soprano.

  • Brian Asawa, when you said you found your falsetto voice... do you really mean your upper/passaggio voice (full-upper/mixed voice), or are you really just singing in FALSETTO on this video?

  • he's talking bout not having bad habits, but he's always doing this crap with his hand whie singing...

  • I believe he does so to control contraction-relax of abdominal muscles. Others do similar gestures.

  • in my opinion these are bad habits. one can surely sing perfectly without those movements.

  • @TheOnlyOriginalKebim It's a lesson/coaching.

  • Pretty voice though I personally prefer Jaroussky but this is still pleasant.

  • Jaroussky and scholl,

  • he is so handsome !! :)

  • he is the best CT as far as I know.

  • before yes but really not now! listen to Florin Cesar Ouatu or Max Emanuel Cencic

  • his voice is like a woman!!!

  • No, it's like a falsettist's voice.

  • so, he likes to be like a woman, i knew...

  • HAAHAHAHAH!

  • What does that have to do with the man singing????

  • it's true

  • I had a good chuckle when he said at the end that he used to sing with the sopranos and discovered his upper register! Precisely what I did at his age! :-)

  • he's not singing in falsetto , connected passagio

  • Yeah there is a difference between the head register and falsetto don't be mistaken.

  • Wow

    very tough job

  • I use my head voice for high backup vocals, and my middle voice for lead high notes. They all take place in different places in your throat. He's using his head voice, not his falsetto.

  • Wow. Strangley beautiful.

  • he's using falsetto and not full voice, right?

  • Right. CT use exclusively their head voice, which in men is called "falsetto" (false sound) because head voice is related to women. When lower notes are needed they either bring their falsetto downwards or mix it with chest voice ("full voice").

  • Actually, it isn't falsetto. :P It's the natural voice, albeit a tad bit unnatural. ;)

  • That is certainly not his natural voice. The natural voice is the voice we use when talking. Hear him when he speaks and you'll notice that the pitch is more or less an octave bellow the middle c, while when he sings he barely touches the third bellow the middle c. That's because he doesn't use the same way of production for talking (natural voice) as for singing (falsetto).

  • Search for "Russell Oberlin distincts True Countertenor from Falsettist." If this man is a countertenor, as the video says, he is most certainly not using his falsetto. Head voice and falsetto aren't the same, either.

  • First, listen to what Asawa says - he refers to his singing voice as falsetto voice.

Second, falsetto is pure head voice. Physiologically there is no difference. What Oberlin does is mixing a very good falsetto with some chest to enforce it.

  • Whatever, I know I'm right, and I can see you're too stubborn to admit that you're wrong. Have a nice day :)

  • Head voice for males isn't falsetto. They're still distinguishable. Falsetto is a part of the head voice, but thinner. Head voice has a fuller sound.

  • This in reference to AmatureComposer's comment: "CT use exclusively their head voice, which in men is called "falsetto" (false sound) because head voice is related to women."

  • My vocal coach keeps telling me that my head voice is falsetto and it really irks me at times. I agree in that you can tell the difference.

  • yeah that would irritate me as well. There's no way that they're the same.

  • though they can sound similar depending on the vocalist if you can make your falsetto range sound somewhat like yr normal singing voice then people notice less when you flip.

  • this was supposed to be a reply...

  • Hmm... I have to say, even if a dude can sing an alto's notes there's a definite sound quality that's different than a real woman's voice. To me, it seems that a woman's voice has more resonance than a male's falsetto, which is often weaker and airy.

I suppose you can train to sound like a girl, but most counter tenors just suddenly discover it like this guy.

  • most people actually prefer when a guy sings in his falsetto to have a little... hair. Often times when a guy has an airy falsetto they either dont use it enough or they dont practice with it enough to make it have a full sound.

  • Most countertenors sing repertoir meant for castrato voices. You're right in that an alto should have more resonance to sound nice but, he shouldn't be going for the sound of a woman's voice because he'll never get there. Maybe if he can recapture something of the purity of a boy's voice, there'll be something to his efforts.

  • I know that video. I also know that a ct is basically a baritone with an amazing falsetto.most of the times. I am with a professor who, just as Tetrazzini, Garcia, Lablache, Caruso and other singers have pointed out, is adamant about the register blending with ct voices. it just isn't any.Soprani and alti unite the registers on the fiato. not the ctenors.the true ones.

  • am i can see alot of those notes but need proffessional training. anyone kind enough to just post a warm up video for me ?

  • Who is the teacher?

  • his voice is to female, i love andreas' voice more.

  • I love his voice. I saw him at the Met singing in Giulio Cesare and his voice is powerful enough to feel that house.

  • you are completely wrong about that. I saw the same performance and I could barely hear asawa. He's not one of my favorites either. even daniels couldn't really fill the met, but he cam alot closer.

  • perceptions can be different. I was at family circle and I could hear both of them quite well.

  • I was in the dress circle somewhat on the left side. You may have a point because those seats way in the back actually get really good sound in that hall.

  • They really do. The Met has some bad accoustic places and others that are very good. And also, have in mind that sometimes singers do not sing full voice during dress rehearsals. ;)

  • hi... i don't wanna be bad but i don't like his voice.... i think is great that he is a countertenor and i love countertenors voice but it look like his voice is forced and his voice need more power maybe if he sings lower...

  • his teacher seems to be playing to the camera...

  • Actually this is my teacher to and she is always like that, she's just a great teacher.

  • could you tell me which school is your teacher from? I think she is really good! Thank you!

  • the teacher is jane Randolf from San Fransciso

  • its nice to know i am not the only one with same problems

  • Although his voice range is from alto to mezzo-soprano, he has great soprano voice that I've never seen.

  • Bravissimo!!!!!

  • Beautiful thrill!
