@FlyingGold if arrested development was a series of 45 second skits than yes this is what it would be like. No if you watch them the jokes start layering themselves over the course of 3 seasons. It's absolutely brilliant, the humor is both subtle and snappy, almost 50% of the dialogue has a double meaning, just like the title of the show.
This joke doesn't really make sense. So basically Gob went out and either bought new, bargained, borrowed, found or stole 3 seperate games of Monopoly in exchange for a 20 dollar bill each time. The odds he simply just had the games hanging around is pretty slim. The energy, time and cost of doing something like that doesn't equal the profit he would make... I mean I get the ridiculousness of it but still...it doesn't work as a clever subtle joke. Doesn't add up well and is just unrealistic.
@bdjrs The joke does make sense man, you just haven't got it yet. It's about George Michael having multiple copies of the game, not GOB. Good gag btw, I've seen the pilot maybe 20 times now and never noticed it. AAAAAAHHH! Arrested Development! You got me again!!
Holy fuck, you people know how to ruin a perfectly decent joke. I mean really, does it deserve a debate of any sort. If its funny, its funny, fuck you.
@jcfbell3001 Actually, the word "joke" merely implies that the show was intended to be funny, as the definition of "joke" is "a thing that someone says to cause amusement or laughter". Furthermore, humour is subjective, but it's always interesting to encounter self-designated authorities on the matter who take the time to view content on youtube they already know they don't like, and then decide to comment purely for the sake of annoying people.
maybe it's that i accidently met a couple of the actors....bateman was nice but the funke guy was creepy...really angry and sarcastic...wasn't trying to annoy anyone, i just genuinely wonder why the 'cutting-edge' humor now is so full of schadenfreud and sadism...
@jcfbell3001 AD isn't for everyone (hence its horrible ratings), although I don't think it is fair to call the show sadistic or mean. I'm curious- what sort of humor do you like? Do you have any favorite TV comedies?
The amount of running jokes in this show is ridiculous! I wonder will they keep the old ones going with the new season, or dumb it down. Either way I'm glad it will be back on air.
There is also a similiar subtitle joke about Buster's bird cage from when he was young. You will later see the same cage up in the attic, just like the monopoly game.
Americans are not responsible for the cancellation of this show. I speak for many Americans who think this show was amazing, Family Guy is annoying as hell, and still cannot comprehend why people think anything on CBS is remotely entertaining!
@Giants2082 You have to agree though, there is a very unintelligent demographic in your country. Although there are many intelligent Americans there is a reason why the world perceives you, in general, as stupid. Just like how we perceive you as fat, even if not every single person is.
@nooldgrandmaclowns well... I'll give you the fat thing lol, way too many people here are fat and apparently don't realize it. Last year I saw an obese couple riding through the grocery store on those motorized carts, cramming cookies and ice cream into their baskets. I'm sure those are the same people that will wonder why they can't lose weight--yeah, you win.... Americans are stupid... lol
@nooldgrandmaclowns Americans? No, the network cancelled it because it didn't have enough views, but they regretted it once netflix was created and everybody started watching it.

Wow, this along with the office is the most unfunny overrated show on tv. I tried to watch a season i think i got through 3 episodes before giving up.
@STDrepository You can't watch only 3 episodes, give up, and then announce that it's "the most unfunny overrated show on TV". A lot of the humour in this show comes from running gags, which you would only notice if you bothered to watch more than 3 episodes.
@kendrakeng I suppose this video is one of those "hilarious running gags". Ive seen what kind of show it is, the same people like this like the office, which is an even less funny show.
@klazz Yes the people that enjoy this show also happen to be the same kind of person that calls people insulting names because they dont like the same show and them.
Methinks there be a troll among us. . . @garlock007 Someone doesnt understand what troll means. Telling people that AD sucks isnt trolling. cause it does suck. its boring. If you want real comedy, see big bang theory or rules of engagement.
@STDrepository Wow big bang theory started off good but after season 2 the jokes were way too obvious and you could tell that they dumbed down the show so that they could have a broader audience. Honestly I bet most people would prefer it if there was a little light that lit up on their tv to tell them when someone is telling a joke.
Telling people that Arrested Development is a bad show while watching a youtube video that could only be found by searching Arrested Development and returning to post even more comments afterwards is the very definition of Trolling. I like the Big Bang Theory though so I'll quote something for you, "Hit Troll with axe! Hit Troll with axe! Hit Troll with axe! Hit Troll with axe! This is one tough troll. . . "
Ha! Man oh man. I've watched every episode of this show at least a dozen times, and I STILL find stuff (like this) that I didn't catch before. The jokes just come too fast and on too many levels.
@MrTyler1022 well we're talking 2003, the year of the glorious ball of fire that was AD finale and also the year of the rising popularity of Family Guy. Now Family Guy is a parody of itself, having to sacrifice consistency for humour and being 3 to 4 years late to all the jokes. But in a sadder world , family guy would have been cancelled back then and AD would be the shadow of it's former self. The multiverse sure is a terrifying concept.
Actually, when this show was cancelled it was the number 3 show in TV. The reason the ratings were so low was because at the time, they didn't have the technology to count the views coming from DVRs. So, the numbers they were getting didn't actually match the number of people watching. Therefore, Fox cancelled the number 3 show in TV.
Joke explanation: The reason why George Michael has 3 boxes of Monopoly is because GOB did that illusion for him 3 times, and obviously took money from George Michael...3 times!
Ok good one. But what about the background ship called the "hornblower"? The specific episode I remember seeing it in is the one where Lucille blows a horn at Tobias (Afternoon Delight). That's a subtle joke that many people miss.
@hotcoco111@PokemonAndDBZ This is the joke: Gob gives him the Monopoly game and asks George Michael "you don't have it, right?", and George Michael responds "I don't know I think I might". You see later when he's packing up his things in the model home attic that he has his stack of Monopoly games (presumably all gifts from Gob). The family also plays Monopoly together at the end of the episode, but I don't know if that's related to any of that. You have to watch it a few times to get it.
One of the show's best qualities is its subtlety. The writers don't thump their chest and rub the jokes in the viewers' faces.
Like Gob telling Michael that he should cut the ribbon on a new project since the shareholders would never approve of a construction worker (Michael) cutting it... And then later on, Gob comes out to cut the ribbon dressed like a construction worker.
"Some say wealth is an illusion, well let's just see....for one moment it's here and in the next....Monopoly, you don't have it do you?....that's good cause a lot of the pieces are missing."
@MurkMenthaa Well in all fairness, I was once voted the worst audience participant Cirque Du Soleil ever had. I'm sorry, I just didn't find their buffoonery amusing!
@rarples since gob tells him about the acne and the erections, we expect the camer to be going to his erection when he's in the attic, but it actually goes to his many sets of monopoly
he might have done that multipul times and the pieces of one box spread through the 3 but where did the other 2 boxes come from? maby he only found the box and then spread em whic might have been why pieces were missing...... or one pf the funny parts was just the insignificant fact that pieces were missing.... just a thought..
That's why this show is worth several rewatches. There are many more of those subtle jokes that took me ages to find. I'm wondering how many I have yet to find.
@IKe145 I first watched it and thought it was pretty good. I watched it again and so many "Ohs!" happened and than it was one of the best shows in my opinion. The show is so dense, too dense for the general public if you ask me, that's one reason why views were poor.
even better is the episode with the public relations person in season 1 where george michael says he got a homeless man to get away from the stand without hurting his feelings... (then shows a homeless man with a balloon) and later in the episode it shows a newspaper with an article on how bad the bluths are (the cold hard bluth) and right next to it is an article with a headline reading "old man gets a balloon"
Here's another subtle joke I just got. In "The Ocean Walker", Lucille and George Sr. tell Rita's uncle that Michael and Rita ran off to Legoland. The uncle comes back at the end of the episode for a brief second to take Rita back to England wearing a Legoland shirt.
This show mastered it! "You'll never be hand fed again," as Gob sets the seal free. And to take off from Ozziefan, they mention a "wee brain girl" in a newspaper later.
The best subtle joke is when Buster is sitting on a bench before he is attacked by a seal. The bench says Army Office (I think) but you can only see Arm Off. Or when Rita is on a Wee Britain bench and you can see Wee Brain.
Hard to believe anyone could catch those when they saw the show first!
@SuperPoopMaster007 i've seen every episode multiple times. why do you make stupid youtube comments? don't you realize that NOBODY cares and that most people reading your comment think that you're an idiot?

he might have done that multipul times and the pieces of one box spread through the 3 but where did the other 2 boxes come from? maby he only found the box and then spread em whic might have been why pieces were missing...... or one pf the funny parts was just the insignificant fact that pieces were missing.... just a thought..

So extended pilot... do you get that on the dvd or something?

You can also see a subliminal image of it at the end of 0:36 seconds when he is thinking about it.

There's SO many "in-episode" jokes and references... this show really is the very best... and that's an understatement!

Here's another subtle joke I just got. In "The Ocean Walker", Lucille and George Sr. tell Rita's uncle that Michael and Rita ran off to Legoland. The uncle comes back at the end of the episode for a brief second to take Rita back to England wearing a Legoland shirt.

I NEVER NOTICED THAT!

Or when buster finds his hand chair in the maids house and says he never thought he'd miss a hand so much
PianoProdigy88 4 months ago 5
This show mastered it! "You'll never be hand fed again," as Gob sets the seal free. And to take off from Ozziefan, they mention a "wee brain girl" in a newspaper later.
dsparentsr 4 months ago
The best subtle joke is when Buster is sitting on a bench before he is attacked by a seal. The bench says Army Office (I think) but you can only see Arm Off. Or when Rita is on a Wee Britain bench and you can see Wee Brain.
Hard to believe anyone could catch those when they saw the show first!

@0zziefan Hah, that's awesome! Didn't notice either of those, but I love that they put them there.

First there's wealth, then . . . Monopoly! But there are pieces missing from the Bluth monopoly . . .

ALL jokes in this show are subtle. And they're not jokes, they're comedic discourses; jokes are what a clown tells for money.
