  • Wonderful stuff; used to see them and hear them like this every day as a kid. Never forgotton. Thanks for sharing.

  • Tks for the clip. Great to see all the green coaches as well, as it should be.

  • I love the whistle here. Throaty, strong, it signals something big and fast is approaching. You don't want those 'tinker bell' whistles they have in other countries....

  • Dette her må bare være en av verdens raskeste damptog.

  • railroading in the north america is so much better than anywehere else.

  • while that was one of the better English whistles, the majority of English whistles sound like Thomas the bloody tank engine

  • Nice Doppler effect with the whistle!

  • Just shared on my facebook page. What a sight, and what a sound!!! Awesome from start to finish. :-)

  • must have been some kind of WWII camoflage.....theyve disguised a canadian engine in the u.s.a. to look and sound like a british engine and cars. no wonder

britain beat the germans with trickery like that!

  • @loflyerz7 What?

  • Merchant Navy class is a thing of beauty for certain :D Will be good when we get ours running next year on the GWSR :)

  • The whistle sounds like a man screaming

  • Great whistle!

  • Watching the video gives me cold shivering... The speeding train in the curve and the 'out' zooming of the camera ads to the effect As if you step back on the platform.

    Good camerawork, good shot !!

  • wow! What a whistle!

  • ah happy days U.S. whistles have NO personaltiy they all sound the same now with a BRITISH whistle u could tell what type of loco was coming down the line and for those who have seen and A4 at speed will know what i mean eh....

  • British whistles are whiney, like Brits.

  • @disgruntldtoad

american whistle sound like a moan

    :P

  • most of your whistles are just one tone whistlesBORING .!the only whistle called a hooter is a larg one tone whistle in the united states.our whistles have a lot more umf in them there louder and WAY better sounding.

  • What a skin tingling clip!! Fantastic - the approaching smoke & steam and that Southern whistle (unmistakable!) with doppler. We have so many different, melodious and emotive steam loco whistles in the UK - and Europe. Unlike the American hooters, ours have character and life. The American hooters - heard one, heard 'em all! This clip brings back so many memories from Woking platform! Thanks

  • well then im just saying american whistles are melodeous and plesent to hear.while that thing makes me want to screem its so anoying!

  • sort of owl hoot noise really - owl at speed - the big difference is when whistles are double or multiple blast - we had a few of those - check out the Britannia Class locos.

  • @shininghappyperson7

I know what you mean American whistles touches ones soul were as the English ones hurts your ears!!!

  • @shininghappyperson7 I love American chime whistles. They make the blood run cold (kind of).

  • @SteffanLlwyd ummmmmm ok

  • @shininghappyperson7 Another couple of great sounds are big ends knocking when the regulator is closed on a worn out loco.... and flanges squealing against the rail on tight corners....

  • @SteffanLlwyd i love the sounds of a heavy american steam locomotives one ton drive rods clanking when it goes by and the ground shakeing awsomeness that is a steam locomotive

  • @shininghappyperson7 Although I'm a UK railfan, I am happy to admit that North American steam is fundamentally IT! Something else kind of wonderful are old Lakers (ore carriers on the Great Lakes)....

  • @SteffanLlwyd yeah, too bad none of them are left in operation.i live were high speed passenger trains would travel on the Delaware&Hudson new england sections with huge speedy 4-8-4s and acationally some D&H 4-6-6-4s came up to the area.

  • @shininghappyperson7 Wow! I'd love to see such machine on the move for real. And to be on the footplate with the crew as the energy of the piston thrusts were transmitted through the draw bar under our feet. What a way to earn a living! (My wife's late grandfather was a steam locomotive driver and used to choose high speeds that would centre the driving wheels on the track when running through curves - avoiding flange contact with the rail. Great skill: balancing all that mass on the cant..

  • @SteffanLlwyd ya unfortunatly no one saved just one delaware and hudson steamer.its to bad i have a feeling you would like some of the locomotives because the owner of the railroad visited the UK and he got the idea to stick the pipping-n-stuff under a copper boiler jacket then locomotive would be painted a blue ish gray color, the D&Hs passemger locomotives were verry clean sleak and fast with white rimmed drivers and trailing truck wheels.

  • @shininghappyperson7 Brits had a thing about hiding piping: surprising as the loading gauge here is very restricted (profile 'C1') and leaves little enough room for boilers and cylinders let alone anything else. We had quite a lot of three and four cylinder machines only because that was the only way to get enough tractive effort. The 4-8-4 is the perfect layout for a conventional steamer: stable front-end and a big firebox for high continuous DBHP. There's rumours about building one new here

  • @shininghappyperson7 Southern whistles aren't the best, I'll admit!

  • @shininghappyperson7 Horns, whistle ect are not made to make music there there to warn a large or heavy vehicle is coming towards them -_- ps i believe the 3801 steam engine has the most beautiful whistle & its Australian.

  • Well just think of the purpose of the whistle, to warn people on the track. A high-pitched whistle carries further than a hooter.

  • I like this clip...and I like the whistle...Uk steam engine whistle are alot better than american ones....which are like vulgar tug boat like whistles..!!!!!!!

  • how about a japanese rendition ? Yamaguchi steam 3 - somewhere inbetween

  • @dcg12b Which railroad was it, because it certainly wasn't a Pennsy engine. Probably one of them UP engines or 4449, can't stand them.

  • @dcg12b Any steam whistle is music to the ears

  • a bit of a squeak?that darn thing sounded like a fricken banchie!american wistles are like gold compaired that puny little excuse of a whistle!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Great video, very nostalgic. The Hornby Dublo catalogue for about 1961 (might be a bit later) had a pic on the front cover of a rebuilt Bulleid engine at speed - not really possible to identify it, but very like this shot.

  • Don't you just love the feeling in the pit of the stomach when a steam hauled express blasts past at close range?!

  • Steve, this is one of my other big interests -astronomy. See video response.

Sunset on Mars is somewhat more sedate! It amazed me to see this sunset so soon after it happened. Hope you enjoy it.

    Sunset Mars August

  • Hi Steve, Thanks

I meant....while I love the steam engine whistles of UK engines - this is an ace (no pun!) clip especially the doppler effect as 35005 flashes by - I also love the haunting sound of those US steam engines.

I imagine a train like the Hiawatha, pulled by an F class, cruising at 115mpk/185kph across those flat open plains whistling 10ks out from some 'lonesome' little US town before it rushes through and disappears in an instant into a swirling cloud of steam and dust.

  • I love the sound the carriages made as they passed

  • What ever happened to British Rail? They used to appear everywhere now there all private companies. The only times you see the old BR logo is on steam specials like this one. And i think Intercity is privatly run now. =/

  • BR was broken up over 10 years ago now

  • GREAT! does anybody know how fast it can run?

  • These days the speed is limited to, I believe, 75 mph but the Bulleid Pacifics were capable, and indeed did, top the 100mph milestone. Especially in the latter days of steam some very fast runnings were recorded.

  • moist

  • hey it is british ! yeah , thought so .

  • oops ,my bad , canadian, awsome.

  • holly shit the brits love there speed!!

  • Awesome!

  • who cares about whistles. this loco is fantastic and the clip is aweaome. my dad always said the southern used to run flat out compared to a more leisurly pace on the great western. that's why he preferred the southern.

  • One of my favourite tube clips, but what has happened to the sound? It is really quiet now.....?

  • love it !!!

  • Very nice video, only one problem ! The CPR here in Canada NEVER used a locomotive number like 35005. For example the CPR's large 2-10-4Selkirk steam engines used the 5900 number series ( using only FOUR digits, a system still in use today as well ). I was employed on the CPR for 30 years and have some knowledge of their steam history.

  • ah, this was 21C5 under Oliver Bulleid's original numbering system! Names were after shipping lines - Clan Line, French Line CGT, Elder Dempster Lines etc

  • Thanks very much for the update and info on this beautiful British steam engine. It seems the confusion was here on my part. A very nice video, bye for now.

  • you're very successful at having the driver whistle at you. I reckon you hold up a big white lollipop with "W" on it behind the camera ;-)

  • the whistels in america are so much better those whistels are like blowing a whistel at a soccer game to plane for me 5-6 chime wistels are the best

  • American whistles are rubbish compared to chime whistles, like what this engine has and those A4's, they sound great.

  • Be nice if you could actually spell WHISTLE!

  • i know it is not the whistle that makes it move its just in some cases the whistle can rewin the amazing site. like reading and northerns t-1 4-8-4 2102 should have a deap whistle not a sqeakey high pitch one. type in reading & northern 2102 you will see what i mean.i just wish that it was maby a 4 or 5 chime to make it sound the greatests that it looks excuse my spelling

  • What a pointless comment...because the whistle really makes the steam loco move doesnt it.... Can Pac's whistle has always had a bit of a squeak to it in preservation, and in my opinion she beats anything american. Cant beat a Bulleid! This is a great video, one of my favourites.

  • Stunning vid *****

  • One of the best Bulleid clips on YouTube! Wonderful stuff, thanks!

  • That's MASSIVE !

  • AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!

  • you'll never beat steam, never ever

  • Great shot. Brief Encounter.

    6233 fan.

  • Nice whistle or not, she's an awesome sight to see!

  • totally awesome.

  • how come Europe never got into the deeper, gutsier whistles on locomotives?

  • Didn't need to be heard over the distances American engines did. Out on the prairiestheir lower tones could carry miles, and gave plenty of warning- important when most railways were (and are) unfenced over there. In Europe generally the whistle was a more local warning.

  • Awesome! What a superb clip, well done!

  • eh, that looks around 68-70 miles an hour. It might be 65, im not sure. Its going pretty fork'n fast.

  • soory what was pulling it lol i did not get a chance 2 see it

  • Wow. That is freakin' cool. English engines have those super lonesome, haunting whistles. Not quite as intimidating or as large as our American consolidateds but still mighty fine. Thanks for sharing.

  • OOOPs! In haste and slipped - Apologies ----- meant to give you a +1. Nice comment - love those US steam engine whistles!!!!!!!!!

  • Hugh- its in UK not US!

  • Comment removed

  • See my other replies above. This is why I also love US steam

    Speed+Whistle: Union Pacific # 844 @ Laramie

    Awesome Power:

    3985 + 143 Freight Cars

    Enjoy!

  • That's not in America! Micheldever, Hampshire is in England.

  • sorry, i missread it as new hampshire. still, excellent footage and even better the engine. what is the class and wheel arrangement?

  • Don't let the thumbs-down get you down; no reason why people should be mean about a simple mistake. Anyhow, you might be interested to know that the Great Western's No. 6000 "King George V" visited the US in 1927 to take part in the Baltimore & Ohio's 100-year anniversary celebrations. Also, none other than the Flying Scotsman visited the US and did a few runs in 1969 -- I've seen pictures of it; they had to fit it with a cowcatcher and American headlight!

  • sory i missread it as new hampshire, and very good, what is the class and wheel-arrangment of this engine? and as for the scotsman, im glad she visited and all, but it was undignified and did not do it justice with the cowcatcher and headlight. those turned a refined british lady into an american southern belle of an engine

  • It's a Southern Railway Merchant Navy class, 4-6-2, designed by Oliver Bulleid and built 1941. She started out as a streamliner, and in 1959 was rebuilt by British Railways to her current appearance.

  • A Bullied at speed - is there any finer sight?

  • fast

  • i think ive shat me pants yeeeaahhhhhhhh

  • Man I didn't know steam trains could go so fast! Awesome!

  • you should watch the BR 05 001.

that one goes up to 120 mph :P

  • This is excellent work!

  • if you look at 'steam train at speed 1' that's 77 mph - so compare if you can !

  • Excellent video of this loco performing on its home rails. Caught the whole ethos of steam.

  • ive entered the matrix lol!

  • WOW! What a cracking video! This is excellent footage, and the whistle is perfect!

  • This brings back memories of standing on Winchester station in the mid-Sixties as steam locos blasted through at full thrash to attack the bank in the up direction! The sound and fury gets me in the pit of the stomach. Yeah! Nothing else like it! Thanks. I'm loking forward to the Kensington Olympia/ Weymouth return bash on August 1st with Spam Can 34067...

  • supurb, you dont get that with diesels!!!!!

  • 35005 at Micheldever. It just about says it all regarding preserved steam running on the main line. This is a perfect little clip, everything comes together fantastically finished off by good camera work from a great location - sometimes more is less! I like your work. The doppler shift on the whistle is the icing on the cake that emphasizes the speed and power.

  • ACE

  • im glad that im not alone in thinking that steam still reigns supreme!

  • my f***ing god! how on earth can you replace these wonderful and evocative beasts! im a modern era man but now im having serious doubts! more more!

  • Agreed.

  • it definetly is steam train AT SPEED woooooooooo it was great

  • dam rite ! hahaha

oooooooooooh sent shivers down my spine did that !

  • Who needs sex with this to look at!
