What a cast: Sena Jurinac (!), Rothenberger, Schwarzkopf with Herbert conducting the Vienna boys (no girls in those days). WHAT 'staging' of this trio. This must be the just about the best on record of that particular scene. Sublime does not cover it.

I think this wonderful. Der Rosenkavalier is described as a lightweight opera or even comedy by some but this is one of the most moving moments in opera or indeed any classical music. Apparently there is a limited release of this version at a company called cdjapan but I have not yet ordered so cannot vouch for it.
This Schwarzkopf singing is beyond words; she caresses the tragic ending of her love but is able to know it was inevitable and is able to go on to the next stage in her life.
This glorious Trio is my favorite Strauss,, it is such a wonderful way he knows we all must age and be able to move to the next stage in our life, as both he and Schwarzkopf did so magnificently.
@niallguinan Is this performance available on DVD? I don't believe so, but I have a brand new, factory sealed VHS set of this Der Rosenkavalier with Schwarzkoof, Jurinac and Rothenberger recorded at the Salzberg Festival, if you are interested. A wonderful opera film...
Schwarzkopf owns this role to this very day. She was absolute magic in the Dallas Opera production I saw in the early '80s. This has got to be the finest moment in 20th century opera.
Oh well, we shall never know. Lisa della Casa sang die marschalin in the first performance, and she is equally good, and beautifull too, yet Karajan chose Schwarzkopf for this film.
I saw this film in about '68, and it has never left me. Can any more lovely singers than these three have ever been brought together in this opera? ES, beyond question, but AR's magical tone,
SU's perfect technique and seeming convincingly male whilst being so obviously a really handsome woman, need as much praise.
For golden tone and focused technique, I always have peferred Gundula Janowitz's voice over all others, acting nonewithsatnding. I never, however, have found a complete and truly good CD or DVD recording of her in the role, nor in "Capriccio." If anyone does find them, please let us know.
I've never been a big Schwarzkopf fan but I have to say that this is probably the most beautiful performance of this scene that I have ever seen. Absolutly wonderful!
Schwarzkopf's magnificent voice delivers an ethereal "above and beyond" quality in this wonderful perfomance of what I consider Strauss's finest operatic scene.
Schwarzkopf is THE Marschallin, even according to Spanish Diva Victoria de los Angeles, who told me herself when I asked her why she never sang die Marschallin. I saw Schwarzkopf Met debut Rosenkavalier - well, first in history! people in the balconies tore up programs and threw it down as confetti, gentlemen running to the stage and offering their rings and me .... high up in the back of balcony, wiping my tears, shouting BRAVO! Her finesse?ES acts like a classy Marschallin and sings like angel
I believe you! I would have thrown a ring to her as well... ;-) It's a pretty "dogmatic" discussion though - "who's the best" - To me art is not about "being the best" but striking a chord that is above and beyond that....
This really is the best Rosenkavalier. Sena Jurinac is magnificent. Edelman is a wonderful Ochs. Rothenberger's a beautiful Sophie. And Schwarzkopf is really the best as the Marschallin. It's entirely wrong to think of her as cold: there are layers and layers of subtlety of portrayal here, but there's deep feeling at every layer. Erich Kunz is a splendid Faninal. And there is something about the way the Vienna Phil do Viennese that nobody else can match.
I totally agree. Scharzkopf is a dream - vocally and stage perfomance... she not only portraits but embody a 3-dimensional and layered character ..which is rare.. My reference recording is the karajan from 54.. the tempo in this present videoclip is a bit hurried after my humple opinion... Rosenkavalier has a distinctive quality, that is both divine and down-to-earth...... It's both pastiche and modern. Has desillusioned womanhood mid-thirties ever been described better on opera?
If you want to hear this opera as Strauss wrote it, go for Solti's Vienna set with Regine Crespin, Yvonne Minton, Helen Donath and Manfred Jungwirth. You can hear every note that Strauss wrote, unlike Karajan's cut versions, beautifully played and sung and with a Marschallin who sounds genuinely world wise and still young.
Lisa della Casa sang in the same production and there is some rare footage on that in her recent interview...of the 2: ES and LDC. The former was the more insightful but latter was more beautiful in voice and appearance. But both were splendid.
Stunning video, no question, but Karajan's 1956 recording, again with Schwarzkopf, is the standard against which Der Rosen's are judged. Not just one of the greatest "opera" recordings, but one of the greatest recordings, period. The EMI house-band, the Philharmonia Orchestra, flows with lushness, Schwarzkopf, born to the roll, Otto Edelmann, Christa Ludwig, Eberhard Wachter, Ljuba Welitsch, Nicolai Gedda & a soaring Teresa Stitch-Randall create a once-in-a-lifetime cast.
It is actually already available on DVD. I managed to get it from a German Mail Order Company. The label is RCA Red Seal. It has to be said though that a decent digital remastering of the film is long overdue.
No other version of this trio is as beautiful or makes you feel so emotional inside. Amazing performance. Nobody can say those few first phrases like Schwarzkopf.
I think there a few school of thoughts on what is an ideal Rosenkavalier. This version is justly famous but there are some pretty remarkable recordings elsewhere- Crespin and Minton, Te Kanawa and von otter and Te Kanawa's live performances from the MET. ES is different and certainly delivers a very insightful interpretation but she is very arched and learnt where as i find other versions including Fleming and Graham more spontaneous.
But, pace ES fans, I just don't don't go for the 'cold' school of Marschallins though she sings it pretty well.
And Karajan? Just think he kind of 'misses' the absolute climax at the end - check out the wondrous Kleiber recording (also with stunning performance from Jurinac + 'warm' Marchallin from Maria Reining) to see what i mean.
Jesus, just kill me now. This is the most beautiful thing I've ever heard.

dear cavaliers..may I make a statement; until you have heard the 1933 recording
of Der Rosen: you should not commit to commitment. Ask any critic your life would
open up to the most wonderfully trained voices. Lotte Lehmann, Eliz Schumann.
M.Olszewska,R. Mayer,..Vienna State under R. Heger, this is so far superior to
any post recordings...it's rare ask Glenmed.
