No one brags about watching Disney. Also it is ironic that you criticize us for not having culture by listing great icons, all of whom are American. If our nation is so disillusioned and has no culture then how come we have produced such great artistic minds? Sure we are with fault, as is the entire human race is but it is wrong to generalize. Also France has many issues of it's own. I know many ignorant French people too. Please reconsider.
In the US it's seems that it is a shame to show your culture - it's bettter to like Disney films and idiot TV shows, whereas in France, students are encouraged to read, go to concerts, the theater, cinema,museums.. though it tends to be less and less of well-educated people in France too. I want all Americans to stand up and fight for their endangered culture.. You're are able to change the deal and make of the US a cultured land, and by this I mean to erase religous fanaticism and star system.
I'm barely beginning to study French culture. The language has always seemed intimidating to learn. There's too many silent weird pronunciations that don't match the letters. It's barely phonetic. English as a first language is bad enough.
@myopicmaquis: you have been miss informed. French is extremely phonetic, unlike english. Get a good teacher and learn the French phonetic system like mathematic formulas! There is very few exceptions once you learn how a set of vowels sound together. Get A GOOD TEACHER!!
English is not phonetic, try: We wound up wrapping the wound!! The DOVE dove into the bushes!!! The produce market produces a lot of revenue!!
@beyadetowbaby I know English is not phonetic, but the amount of what I'm use to as normal consonants that are silent in French seems like it would take a lot of time to learn, espeically if I was to tour a country that doesn't care for native english speakers failing.
@beyadetowbaby True it's actually very easy to pronounce, there are a few basic rules for every of those silent letters, just learn them and then it's always repeated. -d, -t, -x, and -s, are mostly not pronounced at the end of a word, same for -ent at the end of conjugated verbs. Reapeat ad vitam eternam...Easy as fuck.
@myopicmaquis That's because we conceive language differently. Written French and Spoken French don't have the same purpose or goal at all. Written French is a legacy, it's supposed to highlight the etimology, history and inner meaning of a word, each one is considered as part of a "family" of words and has to show that too French is a very "gallant" language that's why it often aknowledges the feminine version of a word with a silent letter i.e. franchouillard because it's franchouillarde...
Dear Ducky, I'm French I love France's culture, history. But also I am a big fan of US Culture from end of ww2 to the 70ies. The Kerouack, Burroughs, Hollywood age of glory, the hobos, Elvis, people against Vietnam war, those 'Flowers in your hair' movements. That was US greatest time in my opinion. Then came true capitalism, and then everything faded away. Rekindle with Kerouack !
Si possible, pourriez-vous refaire les sous-titres? Il y a quelques peitites fautes qui changent quand même la signification: Par exemple, "Hérite/Profite" n'est pas seulement "Inherit/Enjoy" mais aussi "Inherit/Profit".
I wish american people could deal with such things as easily as he does. American are loosing their culture, a young, great culture if only they realized they're on the a dead-end staircase and that they'll have to get down on the ass eventually. Bravo, une France en perdition mais qui en est au moins consciente.
@IndigOcean I'm French and today at school, an american 19 y-o girl, studying anthropology at UCLA, went to talk in my English class, she clearly said that there were too many budget cuts particularly concerning Education. She also said she found her french classmates way more cultured than people in the USA. The Tea Party, the Republican representatives, and all the fanatic christian churches from the Midwest aren't helping to preserve your culture, isn't it ?
@IndigOcean In France, education is free, as opposed to the 25,000 $ that this student had to pay for her tuition - that creates a gap between wealthy and poor families in the US, whereas in France, you have the same opportunity to learn, whether you're rich or not. However, I reckon that the few American people who took time to bother with France (aka the socialist demon) and its culture should be higher in my esteem than the other Americans, too dumb to open their mind.
@IndigOcean Freedom in the US is often used for bad reasons (white supremacy, racism...) and I just can't bear a country in which billionaires let their "brothers" dying of illnesses they couldn't afford to cure. American culture seems so standardized nowadays and it is broadcasted by Hollywood blockbusters and the media. It influences a lot French culture, and not for the best as we can notic -even though I reckon US culture as a great one but money seems to be more important than masterpieces.
@IndigOcean Just compare the visitors at the MoMA and the Centre Pompidou, you'll see that there's a long way to go for basic US citizens to be interested by art, litterature. An American friend told me that a huge majority of people in her class just couldn't name novels by Steinbeck, Kerouack, Hemingway or Fitzgerald, neither that they knew about Pollock, Twombly, Lichtenstein, Hopper, Kubrick, Welles, Eastwood, Scorsese or Tarantino... and they're all American artists - see, that's dramatic
