why do i feel that baritones are greater interpreters than tenors who sings the same art songs like this? this recording made my day! never heard this piece this great! wow! Just music indeed!
Un organo vocale unico nella storia dell'Opera permette a questo gigante ogni sorta di nuance espressiva, assieme a Titta Ruffo e Hans Hotter il più grande di tutti ::))
My God! Not only a wonderfully produced voice, but one of such natural, honeyed beauty that one can only regret that this prince amongst baritones is not more widely regarded today. A singer of great intelligence and refinement.
His personal character must be very gentle and warm-hearted. I always feel it when I listen to his singing. And also so much attractive. This song is unique for him. Simply PERFECT.
My first favorite baritone was John Charles Thomas. He was a wonderful singer and recording artist who also sang opera. For me, Leonard Warren was primarily a great opera artist. You can hear John Charles sing "O Del Mio Amato Ben" on YouTube. Both singers are wonderful.
This is one of the only renditions of the song I've heard sung by a baritone, but by far one of the best. It's no wonder though, Leonard Warren having one of the most pretty and pure voices in recorded opera history.
Don't you realize tha Warren is considered by the greatest critics and singers one of the greatest baritones of all time? Has it ever occurred to you that you might have some ear problems?

legatofancier how many times do i need to tell you that Warren is great -- i've seen you make negative comments about warren on like 8 of his video's why even listen if you dislike him so much -- seriously fuck off.
Wonderful singing by one of the finest baritones in Metropolitan Opera history. One of his peers, also on the roster, was the incomparable Robert Mc Ferrin. Hopefully, some footage of his performances will be located for future posting. His Verdi roles were stellar!
Robert McFerrin (Senior) was the father of popular vocalist Bobby McFerrin. If memory serves, he was the first African-American baritone to engaged by the Met. Based on what little I've heard, McFerrin had a very fine voice. Hopefully, more of Robert McFerrin's recordings will be posted on Youtube!
People who have listened both live said that Leonard was for long better, i don´t want to say that Bryn is not good, he´s an incredible artist, (for me specially when he sings lieder), no one said he is the greatest.
leonard Warren was the truest of all the baritones of his generation. I my self is a dramatic baritone, that is influenced by this wonderful artist that left us much too soon. Highest respect!! Sincerely,Jake Barneman
They don't make baritones like Warren any more. You are right. Everything he sang he tossed off with such great abandon and power.Reminds one of another unique great voice who died at age 48 E.C.
I know I'm a girl, but I sang this song not to long ago. It's a wonderful peice of art that doesn't get sung often enough. Donaudy needs to be sung more often!
Thanks for posting this. I have the CD of his recital in Russia and it's great. This has always been one of my favorite songs and it was a pleasant surprise to hear his version.
Incredible technique and piano singing in the upper passagio. Note how the timbre of his voice remains the same whether singing forte or piano, a hallmark of an excellent technique.
Easily the most accomplished baritone (musicianship and acting) the USA has produced. This is gorgeous.

Stunning!!!
The situation he obtains here of taming his huge, big baryton voice
and adapt it so beautifuly to this highly romantic song is amazing.
It´s like a brave lion playing between his claws with a tiny, delicate flower,
making it look prettier, and afterwards letting it fly away unharmed.....

In his earliest recordings, all these flaws you described are present in such small doses that they ADD to the qualities of his voice.

He's great, but the greatest? I think not. Bryn Terfel has him beat hands down.

hahaha....
As if Bryn Terfel could even compare to Leonard Warren. Very few can, and Bryn is simply not one of them.
Belcore14 3 years ago 2
Gotta agree. Bryn really bored me to tears on every occasion that I listened to him. He sings notes, yeah, but he doesn't sing the music.
forallyouknow 2 years ago
I would tend to disagree on that count... Bryn may not be able to measure up to Warren, but he is in no way boring.
Vivaldicellist 2 years ago 2
Maybe he stimulates your ear in a certain way, and that's great for you. But he could never do that for me.
