Nobody in a movie theater wants to have a guy in the audience talking about how he thinks the movie in the other room is better or worse.
D --> Why would someone bring up Buckethead on a Guthrie video? People are just going to try to trash him because they are fucking idiotic barbarians who don't appreciate good music. Buckethead is my favorite guitarist and musical inspiration, but Guthrie is c001 too. And for those of you who say Guthrie crushes Buckethead, don't be damn idiots, but Guthrie is definitely up there. Not to mention they both do a lot of similar techniques like slap guitar and hybrid picking.
its just to mute the strings when he taps a lot of bands use them cause its really hard to not let strings ring when you are playing standing up and tapping and puling off really fast.
@TheNonane It is a capo...a spring capo. The con of that is that it starts to get uh...soft? So you have to get many...but i think that is a relative stuff...well i don't know if spring capo is the correct name.
@TheNonane I don't think this is a capo. I don't know what it is called, but it's like an elastic band which mutes the strings to avoid unwanted sounds from them. It's not pressing the strings all the way down like a capo.
@alexstrat A capo doesnt mute strings. Rocks is talking about the hairband Guthrie uses. A capo is used to change the key the guitar operate in by pressing down the frets on the neck. In some cases capos can change tuning if it has 6 individual capos on the unit. But a capo is not intended, nor should it mute any strings.
@Krimghor well they are both playing over backing tracks as just a guitar player and still able to entertain you so id say it has a lot in common.dif styles though
I prefer Govan playing with a light source. When he plays it live with ambient lights on stage, playing seems harder. I suffer when I can't see the fretboard properly. Regardless, astounding and awesome playing as always.
@Phrgyian theory wise you are both right, you could notate it in 7/4 and 7/8, the difference is you would have to half the tempo and double the note values, or vise versa. Overall they would sound exatly the same.
@everlight389 you gotta hand it to him... i would be having a fucking seizure if i would only stand up so near to guthries awesomeness and glory... kudos for the endurance...
@everlight389 dude, you have to understand that the vibration that comes from the awesomeness of this man has to be pretty strong, so im guessing it would be difficult to handle a camera for that matter...
i Love both buckethead. and guthrie govan and i love them very much. If guthrie can put another album as incredible as erotic cakes i will say guthrie is a better song writer
It is probably not fair to compare any other guitar players to GG because simply you would be comparing a apple to 5 apples....yes Guthrie can do them all and if you don't know it, go out and buy guitar, try playing them for 15 years and see if you have different opinion....there are very few in GG's league and certainly Buckethead is not one of them.....
That's right Buckethead is in the league ahead of Guthrie. Guthrie sucks. Everything he plays is cheesy crap, and he's never come up with anything on his own. It's all recycled chord progressions, and typical chord/scale relationships.
It's probably not fair to compare one style of music from one musician to another style from another musician. Would you compare someone like Shaq to, say, Lebron James? They're both athletes and basketball players, and both are very skilled at what they do. They accomplish it in different styles, but, nonetheless, both are extremely good.
Either you like someone's music, or you don't. No need to compare and say that one isn't in the other's league...
Playing music takes alot of efforts, time and skills, heart....in whatever you do professionally, skill-side will always be compared....and that is how you get better and that is how you analyze, find out where you are and also appreciate, refine your taste....often times people say what you say, but musicians out there will always compare their skills to others and trying to improve...and I was't comparing Guthrie's style to BH's style, I was simply comparing GG's ability as a solo guitarist
I understand what you're saying, and thank you for level-headed reply...those are hard to find these days.
Not being an guitar player myself, I can't really comment to someone's abilities well enough to do so, other than "they're both extremely good at what they do."
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I would agree that Guthrie is more technical than buckethead, (and both are fuckin insanely technical) I would say buckethead is a bit more versatile in the sense that he can evoke countless styles, be it brutal speed metal or heartfelt acoustic. Most of Guthrie's playing that I've heard is very similar in tone and style.
dude i hadn't, but I checked it out... I don't know what you were trying to prove with that song, it was one of the most uninspired songs I think I've heard out of Guthrie.... some interesting stuff in the middle, but pretty lame man.
Bluegrass is not meant to be played like that. Also, again, same basic playing style and tone, just with a cheesy "bluegrass" tone added, same shred licks and shit.... Go listen to buckethead's acoustic shards, Pepper's Ghost, or Cuckoo Clocks of Hell, Thanatopsis
Also, dude buckethead has like 30+ studio albums of HIS OWN and then like 30 more that he did with other bands.. Guthrie has one album. Im not saying buckethead is better or anything like that, but the numbers speak for themselves.
The numbers mean that buckethead is CLEARLY a much more prolific artist, and also more versatile. If you bothered to listen to 3 seconds of each album I mentioned, you would see that each has a completely and totally unique tone, a totally different way of playing music. NOT BETTER. More versatile. I love Guthrie, he's an amazing guitarist, but all he plays is Guthrie. I have yet to hear anything else from him. Which is fine by me, Guthrie is fuckin insane.
And prolific means what? How do you know Guthrie won't come out with an album that's completely different than Erotic Cakes? That's right: you don't. I'm not saying Buckethead isn't versatile, but that's all you know. You can't compare the versatility of Buckethead and Guthrie; give Guthrie a chance to make more music and then compare them.
Prolific means he makes a LOT of music. Like 60, 70 + albums. You might know that if you had bothered to open a dictionary.
Again, I don't doubt Guthrie's competence, but until he DOES put out like 29 more albums spreading the gambit from soul-wrenching acoustic to skull-crushing metal and everything in between, Buckethead is a more versatile and prolific artist. Don't argue, you won't win.
Whoa, hold off on the insults, jackass. I know what prolific means, and prolific is not a synonym for versatile. A prolific composer is not necessarily a versatile composer. Maybe you should use a real dictionary other than your own, misguided one.
Your second paragraph should read, "Until he DOES put out like 29 more albums, I WON'T KNOW if Guthrie is as or more versatile than Buckethead, my big friendly blowjob buddy."
lol I know prolific doesn't mean versatile. I was using them both separately, because they are both apt descriptions of buckethead. Buckethead is a prolific artist because he has created 30+ albums and played on as many more. He is versatile because among those many many albums he has played music that is worlds apart, BRUTAL metal, INTENSE, TECHNICAL, PROGRESSIVE speed guitar albums, HEARTFELT, TOUCHING acoustic, you name it, he plays it.
Guthrie plays fusion/shred prog rock. I haven't heard A SINGLE SONG of his that doesn't fit into that style of guitar playing. BUCKETHEAD IS MORE PROLIFIC AND VERSATILE BY THE VERY DEFINITIONS OF THE WORDS. FOR GUTHRIE TO EVEN TIE BUCKETHEAD ON THESE SCORES, HE HAS MUCH CATCHING UP TO DO. CATCH MY DRIFT, JACKASS?
Bullshit you were using prolific and versatile separately; look at your previous comment: "The numbers mean that Buckethead is [...] more versatile." Yeah, way to know what you're arguing about. What it comes down to is, you are so touched by Buckethead (or being touched by him?) that whenever anyone uses his name and Guthrie's in the same sentence, you proceed to have a Niagara Falls period and defend your precious baby to the death. I refuse to converse anymore with someone as stupid as you.
dude i don't care what you think about buckethead, or anything, I just don't give a shit about you. I was using them separately, You just don't want to admit you are wrong. The fact is, Buckethead is more PROLIFIC, because he has made so many albums, he is more VERSATILE because those albums he has made represent countless different tones, emotions, and styles of playing. This has been my argument from the beginning.
I don't know what you're argument is really... I think youre jsut a sore loser
Yes, a prolific composer is not necessarily a versatile composer. BUCKETHEAD IS BOTH. In MY opinion, Guthrie, although talented beyond comprehension, and innovative, skillfull, and musical player, is neither. He is not prolific, because he has only created one album. He is not versatile, because he essentially plays one style, his own. These are not faults, I adore his music. These are simply observations.
Im not of that fight but i think being too versatile isnt good either cause ur not targeting a specific public. Just my opinion. Buckethead is more versatile but i think guthrie has more skills and can play in the same styles as buckethead if he wanted to
I have yet to hear Guthrie play anything heavy, or truly soulful ala much of bucket's acoustic work. I agree that Guthrie is probably more technical, though I've said before they are both beyond insane.
as for your statement about being 'too versatile' i don't agree, I think you actually reach a much wider public. People who enjoy his acoustic works probably wouldn't enjoy his metal, but that's why they listen to the acoustic. Plus he just does so many different things, and its all gold.
No i don't get it actually. Buckethead doesn't put acoustic songs and heavy metal songs on the same album. Chances are, if someone likes one song on an album, he will probably like the rest.
chances of what? Of someone liking a random buckethead song? I don't know, that depends on the album it is from, the song in particular, and above all, the person's taste.
If you are open to most forms of music and enjoy listening to an extremely skilled musician, then yes, chances are you will like bucketheads music.
@Panasper Alright, but i think some people judge buckethead by his look. I hate that. I believe he's playing a character and hes a normal guy if he takes it off. Other then that, his last album wasn't good. He just wanted to take out something to make money. Its just sounds.
the idea of the buckethead character is too separate him as a person from the music he makes. People should listen to the music because they like it, not because he made it.
The latest album i have by him is Forensic Follies, I think he has another out, and i gotta say i was a bit dissappointed and confused by it, but I think it is meant to be listened to OVER other tracks or something. Either way, hes made many many other albums that I love, so i forgive him.
I'm sure Guthrie could stick a bucket on his head if he worked at it. That would probably be the most difficult thing he'd have to do to play anything like Buckethead.
The rest of us probably have a steeper hill to climb.
Wow! Monsieur Sunderlanding...you are a fucktard. You clearly have no grasp of technicality. I love Buckethead and all. But he is not in the same league of technicality or tone as Govan. He plays complex and beautiful, soulful progressions. And further does them at the same speed as Buckethead. Buckethead did indeed develop his own style, but so has Guthrie. And it is far more versatile and applicable. If your idea of talent is speed alone...then you need to educate yourself!
Guthrie never did anything new. His harmonic understanding is about as advanced as Dixie Land jazz was one-hundred years ago, and his playing would be more at home on a Top Gun soundtrack. If you think this is musically advanced it's time for you to go back to the woodshed.
BUeckethead's a very talented guitarist, but Govan is much more my flavor. He is more fusion/prog, and I see buckethead more into the metal/rock category.
@Maverick274 Buckethead is my favorite guitarist. I'm sort of new to Guthrie but he's astonishing. Buckethead isn't really a certain genre but if you had to limit him down he's very avant-garde and twisted. He labels his type of music as "demented". It certainly is a genre of it's own.
Relating this song to a Top Gun soundtrack is silly. If it were on that soundtrack, I might as well go buy it.
Relating Buckethead's music to pop songs...sort of makes me smile. Plain ignorant. That to me is like hearing "Single Ladies" by Beyonce and thinking, "boy, this sure reminds me of Soothsayer..."
Different musicians, different styles. If you don't like one, don't listen to it. There's no need to bash it.
hey, you guys having a bitch fight over buckethead and guthrie. Can you not just accept that you both have different tastes? The idea of one guitarist being better than another is completely subjective, thus rendering an argument pointless as never party is going to yield to the other person's point of view.
The riff at 2:15 just shows what an original approach to invention this musician has. He truly is inventive, technical and has soul all at the same time realizing it's not all about playing fast, aside from all of the tapping, legato and other styles he flows in and out of. He never ceases to fascinate and entertain on so many levels. Thanks for this post!
guthries a genius to be able to write in 7/4 . damn i wish he would come to toronto so that i could take a picture with him and post it as my profile pic to make people jealous.
I am sorry that your expensive tutition you paid for your music education didn't do ntohing for your fame and fortune...it is probably because of this thing called 'talent' that you lack for....but that does not give you the right to sourgrape...duchebag my butt...bet you can't even read music without tab......and learn some manner...loser
You can just say "I am jealous of his talent." We all understand. You can criticise all you want but you can't have others agree with you cuz no one is buying this BS...music doesn't have to be new or creative to touch your heart. And I believe in Guthrie....
i just wonder...what do you wanna tell us? if you think there's no soul in his playing just don't listen to his stuff and let a musical genius pass by your life.
don't let your opinions appear as facts please, i wonder anyway how you can call this a lack of feeling after listening to the part from 4:58
dat fuckin harmonic around 2:09

I think that both of them are great musicians.
They have their own style and thats all.
Guthrie is quite a Jazzy one and Buckethead more Paul Gilbert-Like.
( Paul Gilbert was his teacher.
For me Guthrie uses more techniques like tapping, legato, alternate picking and of course he has more difficulties in his rhythm and melodical skills.
Buckethead in my eyes has a great feeling for melodies and techniques but he always uses chromatic tapping, and paul gilberts alternate pickingstyle.

It is probably not fair to compare any other guitar players to GG because simply you would be comparing a apple to 5 apples....yes Guthrie can do them all and if you don't know it, go out and buy guitar, try playing them for 15 years and see if you have different opinion....there are very few in GG's league and certainly Buckethead is not one of them.....
bungaecong 2 years ago
That's right Buckethead is in the league ahead of Guthrie. Guthrie sucks. Everything he plays is cheesy crap, and he's never come up with anything on his own. It's all recycled chord progressions, and typical chord/scale relationships.
Sunderlanding 2 years ago
It's probably not fair to compare one style of music from one musician to another style from another musician. Would you compare someone like Shaq to, say, Lebron James? They're both athletes and basketball players, and both are very skilled at what they do. They accomplish it in different styles, but, nonetheless, both are extremely good.
Either you like someone's music, or you don't. No need to compare and say that one isn't in the other's league...
JMokan 2 years ago
Playing music takes alot of efforts, time and skills, heart....in whatever you do professionally, skill-side will always be compared....and that is how you get better and that is how you analyze, find out where you are and also appreciate, refine your taste....often times people say what you say, but musicians out there will always compare their skills to others and trying to improve...and I was't comparing Guthrie's style to BH's style, I was simply comparing GG's ability as a solo guitarist
bungaecong 2 years ago
I understand what you're saying, and thank you for level-headed reply...those are hard to find these days.
Not being an guitar player myself, I can't really comment to someone's abilities well enough to do so, other than "they're both extremely good at what they do."
JMokan 1 year ago
Guthrie is not a human !! So please don't compare him with other guitarists :-)

Panasper 2 years ago
You've obviously never heard 'Rhode Island Shred'
FishStik5ive 2 years ago
dude i hadn't, but I checked it out...
Panasper 2 years ago
Then you will understand versatility my friend.
Panasper 2 years ago
Also, dude buckethead has like 30+ studio albums of HIS OWN and then like 30 more that he did with other bands.. Guthrie has one album. Im not saying buckethead is better or anything like that, but the numbers speak for themselves.
Panasper 2 years ago
If by pointing out numbers you're not saying Buckethead is better, what do the numbers say for themselves?
Not trying to incite a pointless argument about who's better, but I fail to see the purpose of comparing the number of albums each artist has.
FishStik5ive 2 years ago
The numbers mean that buckethead is CLEARLY a much more prolific artist, and also more versatile. If you bothered to listen to 3 seconds of each album I mentioned, you would see that each has a completely and totally unique tone, a totally different way of playing music. NOT BETTER. More versatile. I love Guthrie, he's an amazing guitarist, but all he plays is Guthrie. I have yet to hear anything else from him. Which is fine by me, Guthrie is fuckin insane.
Panasper 2 years ago
And prolific means what? How do you know Guthrie won't come out with an album that's completely different than Erotic Cakes? That's right: you don't. I'm not saying Buckethead isn't versatile, but that's all you know. You can't compare the versatility of Buckethead and Guthrie; give Guthrie a chance to make more music and then compare them.
FishStik5ive 2 years ago
Prolific means he makes a LOT of music. Like 60, 70 + albums. You might know that if you had bothered to open a dictionary.
Again, I don't doubt Guthrie's competence, but until he DOES put out like 29 more albums spreading the gambit from soul-wrenching acoustic to skull-crushing metal and everything in between, Buckethead is a more versatile and prolific artist. Don't argue, you won't win.
Panasper 2 years ago
Whoa, hold off on the insults, jackass. I know what prolific means, and prolific is not a synonym for versatile. A prolific composer is not necessarily a versatile composer. Maybe you should use a real dictionary other than your own, misguided one.
Your second paragraph should read, "Until he DOES put out like 29 more albums, I WON'T KNOW if Guthrie is as or more versatile than Buckethead, my big friendly blowjob buddy."
FishStik5ive 2 years ago
lol I know prolific doesn't mean versatile.
Panasper 2 years ago
Guthrie plays fusion/shred prog rock. I haven't heard A SINGLE SONG of his that doesn't fit into that style of guitar playing. BUCKETHEAD IS MORE PROLIFIC AND VERSATILE BY THE VERY DEFINITIONS OF THE WORDS. FOR GUTHRIE TO EVEN TIE BUCKETHEAD ON THESE SCORES, HE HAS MUCH CATCHING UP TO DO. CATCH MY DRIFT, JACKASS?
Panasper 2 years ago
Bullshit you were using prolific and versatile separately; look at your previous comment: "The numbers mean that Buckethead is [...] more versatile." Yeah, way to know what you're arguing about. What it comes down to is, you are so touched by Buckethead (or being touched by him?) that whenever anyone uses his name and Guthrie's in the same sentence, you proceed to have a Niagara Falls period and defend your precious baby to the death. I refuse to converse anymore with someone as stupid as you.
FishStik5ive 2 years ago
dude i don't care what you think about buckethead, or anything, I just don't give a shit about you.
Panasper 2 years ago
Yes, a prolific composer is not necessarily a versatile composer. BUCKETHEAD IS BOTH. In MY opinion, Guthrie, although talented beyond comprehension, and innovative, skillfull, and musical player, is neither. He is not prolific, because he has only created one album. He is not versatile, because he essentially plays one style, his own. These are not faults, I adore his music. These are simply observations.
Panasper 2 years ago
Im not of that fight but i think being too versatile isnt good either cause ur not targeting a specific public. Just my opinion. Buckethead is more versatile but i think guthrie has more skills and can play in the same styles as buckethead if he wanted to
charleseladas 2 years ago
I have yet to hear Guthrie play anything heavy, or truly soulful ala much of bucket's acoustic work. I agree that Guthrie is probably more technical, though I've said before they are both beyond insane.
as for your statement about being 'too versatile' i don't agree, I think you actually reach a much wider public. People who enjoy his acoustic works probably wouldn't enjoy his metal, but that's why they listen to the acoustic. Plus he just does so many different things, and its all gold.
Panasper 2 years ago 3
Good point. But i meant that if lets say a guy who likes his accoustic playing wont buy his album just because he likes 1 song in it. Get it?
charleseladas 2 years ago
No i don't get it actually. Buckethead doesn't put acoustic songs and heavy metal songs on the same album. Chances are, if someone likes one song on an album, he will probably like the rest.
Panasper 2 years ago
But the '' chances '' arent the same with a guy like buck no?
charleseladas 2 years ago
chances of what? Of someone liking a random buckethead song? I don't know, that depends on the album it is from, the song in particular, and above all, the person's taste.
If you are open to most forms of music and enjoy listening to an extremely skilled musician, then yes, chances are you will like bucketheads music.
Panasper 2 years ago
@Panasper Alright, but i think some people judge buckethead by his look. I hate that. I believe he's playing a character and hes a normal guy if he takes it off. Other then that, his last album wasn't good. He just wanted to take out something to make money. Its just sounds.
charleseladas 2 years ago
the idea of the buckethead character is too separate him as a person from the music he makes.
Panasper 2 years ago
He could probably just get that one single song as an mp3 for 99 cents or something, if available.

Guthrie Good...
Video quality Bad, very bad.
Audio quality Bad, very bad.
Why post such shitty quality vids...?
What is the point? Oh, because you were "There"...
Post no more such vids, or it will be off to bed with you and no supper.

whats the shitty quality, its fucking good
charleseladas 2 years ago
I'm sure Guthrie could stick a bucket on his head if he worked at it. That would probably be the most difficult thing he'd have to do to play anything like Buckethead.
The rest of us probably have a steeper hill to climb.

You just got destroyed. Not versatile, eh?
Who gives a fuck if Buckethead has 4000 albums? I don't like a single song by Buckethead as much as I like the whole Erotic Cakes album.
macaulaymcculkin 2 years ago
BleedTheBlind 2 years ago 4
Guthrie never did anything new. His harmonic understanding is about as advanced as Dixie Land jazz was one-hundred years ago, and his playing would be more at home on a Top Gun soundtrack. If you think this is musically advanced it's time for you to go back to the woodshed.
Sunderlanding 2 years ago
another "jazz-Halen" guy.

Buckethead isn't THAT technical.
Guthrie went to school and shit, thats a big plus.

although both are amazing musicains guthrie obviously is a better musician you must be a musical retard not to see that. watch his other videos.
chadyboy22 2 years ago
BUeckethead's a very talented guitarist, but Govan is much more my flavor. He is more fusion/prog, and I see buckethead more into the metal/rock category.
Maverick274 2 years ago 20
@Maverick274 govan is out of his class . Much better.

@Maverick274 Guthrie can play literally anything
SlimyTurnips 1 year ago 4
@Maverick274 Buckethead is my favorite guitarist. I'm sort of new to Guthrie but he's astonishing. Buckethead isn't really a certain genre but if you had to limit him down he's very avant-garde and twisted. He labels his type of music as "demented". It certainly is a genre of it's own.

@Maverick274 You like Shawn Lane? He's like a heavier fusion style.

Domothy 2 years ago
The riff at 2:15 just shows what an original approach to invention this musician has. He truly is inventive, technical and has soul all at the same time realizing it's not all about playing fast, aside from all of the tapping, legato and other styles he flows in and out of. He never ceases to fascinate and entertain on so many levels. Thanks for this post!

I am sorry that your expensive tutition you paid for your music education didn't do ntohing for your fame and fortune...it is probably because of this thing called 'talent' that you lack for....but that does not give you the right to sourgrape...duchebag my butt...bet you can't even read music without tab......and learn some manner...loser
bungaecong 2 years ago
You can just say "I am jealous of his talent." We all understand. You can criticise all you want but you can't have others agree with you cuz no one is buying this BS...music doesn't have to be new or creative to touch your heart. And I believe in Guthrie....
